View Full Version : bike stops when i let go of starter button
Hi
I have a curvy sv650....when I start it,,,as soon as I let go of the starter,it stops.....it will keep running if I keep the starter pressed down.....seems like an electrical issue??...bike has been standing for a few months....any ideas where I would start to find the problem?
Thanks

As luck would have it a wiring diagram posted today.
Thanks..great diagram......

Try this: switch ignition on, don't touch the starter button but bridge the connectors on the starter solenoid with an old screwdriver (wear gloves) to spin the starter. Does the bike start and keep running? If so, the problem is in the wiring to the starter button.
Hi
Tried that and didn't start.....it also dies if I release the clutch.....might try disabling the clutch switch?

If it dies with bike in neutral when clutch released may be neutral switch faulty or mechanically disconnected from mechanism.

The neutral switch wires on my Curvy have been bridged so not in use.As per a recent post this is fine on the old 1999/2002 machines.
I followed the four wires up from behind the front sprocket..that plug into the main harness....this is the neutral switch?.....I unplugged it....and the same thing happened..motor dies as soon as I release the starter button......might need a new loom at this rate!!..:-)
by the way I bypassed the clutch and side stand switches....before I did the neutral switch

The sub loom that goes around the headstock area is often the cause of odd leccy faults in the switchgear handlebar area. Years of flexing lead to some strange shorting.

R1ffR4ff indicated that you need to bridge the neutral switch in the plug rather than just unplug it....
How would this make a difference..as by unplugging your taking it out completely??

If the switch contact is closed in the neutral position then by unplugging the loom you are open-circuiting the switch contact telling the system that the bike is not in neutral ( you are actually replicating a broken wire between the neutral switch and the control system). Although details of neutral switch not shown on the wiring diagram it appears to have two contacts, one that closes to illuminate the 'N' light on dashboard and the other to inhibit start if bike not in neutral + sidestand down and and clutch lever not pulled in.
Even if the dashboard light is saying bike is in neutral it is the other contact that will be causing the problem with bike cutting out when clutch lever released.
Ok thank you.....do you have a image of the wire I need to bridge?....thanks
One thing...when it was unplugged...it still fired and ran...until I let go of the starter button

you need to PM R1ffR4ff and ask him what needs bridging

Were you still holding in the clutch at that point? If you were then it sounds like the starter relay might be the suspect

I'm afraid mine was done before I got the bike and the PO even removed the wires that run to the clutch :(
I did this on my old Hondas though with just a bit of thick 30 amp fuse wire across the ends of the wire that goes to the Clutch switch :)
I've never missed this feature :riding:

Hi Thanks
Yes I was holding in the clutch.....how would the starter relay affect it?...…..its so weird.....as soon as I let off the starter switch it dies...almost like a kill switch.....will happily run and rev when starter switch held in!..

Sorry I looked at the wiring diagram quickly and thought that relay held the power on to the bike normally, but it is obviously just to turn the starter motor.
When you're holding the button is the starter motor turning the whole time?
Yes the starter is turning all the time.....
ended up getting another loom which fixed it!!!!….:-)
