View Full Version : Just been taken out by a Nissan Micra !

Damage to me : bruising & shock
Damage to bike : none :D
Why ?
Because the bike was parked round the corner - I wasn't even near it, let alone on it
Left work early today as I had to get home & collect the kids from School. It was a lovely sunny day as I came out of the office and I was carrying a rather full tank bag, along with my helmet. Got to the road round the corner, looked left - Nissan Micra turning into the road, looked right - nothing coming, looked left again - AAAARG
The Micra, driven by some old bat who looked about 90, had swung so wide round the corner that she was just about to mount the pavement, directly in line with yours truly.
I had just enough time to think F**K ! when she hit me. I think I went onto the bonnet, and rolled off - the tank bag I was carrying in my left hand took most of the force of the blow instead of my leg thank god, and the armour in my leathers took the rest. I ended up lying on the ground a bit dazed and slightly winded, still holding the tank bag.
I don't know where my helmet ended up - someone gave it back to me. I expect it now needs replacing
And the old bat - she didn't stop - I'm not convinced she even saw me
:?
So if you see a fawn coloured Nissan Micra driven by an old bat - get out of the way
I am not a happy bunny :hackedoff:
should have claimed on insurance for helmet :)

You always have to go one better don't you Toad?

Yikes!
And the old bat - she didn't stop - I'm not convinced she even saw me
:?
WHAT??? Jesus...
So glad you're okay Simon, some things really are unbelievable. More importantly thank feck the bike's okay.
Hopefully see you Friday. And as for the helmet, it's unlikely to have sustained much in the way of damage - there's a lot of "I've dropped my lid six inches it must need replacing" hysteria around which I'm quite sure comes from the manufacturers out to make yet another quick buck. Bike mag more or less disproved this with an interesting article a while back, I'll dig it out for you if you're interested.

I think once you reach a certain age you should me made to sit a test every year... or just not allowed in a car...
more evidence cars r dangerous, not bikes.
I think it's simply more evidence that the environment in which we find ourselves as bikers is dangerous.
.
BH. A hit and run. V v serious, is failing to stop after an accident, particularly when you've knocked somebody over. Glad you're not hurt, Mr T.

Any police involvement? It was a hit and run after all...

I almost got hit while pon a traffic island by an old guy in a Toyota last year... He missed the road he was aiming for an ddrove right across the middle of the island... And I don't think he realised he'd done anything wrong either.
The sad thing is he was killed about a month later after he got confused on a level crossing and started to drive down the tracks. And even then he probably never knew what a danger he'd become.
Nissan Micra's

I did call the local cops to report it, the conversation went something like -
Did you get their number ?
No
Anyone hurt ?
Not really
OK, Bye

Well, no offence, but what else did you expect? There's quite a few Micras out there and an alarming number are driven by blind old men...
Toady man, you seem to attract the weird and bizarre people to have an accident with. Can I ride close to you on the annual rideout :?:
Glad your ok though. And seriously saddened that you didn't get her number, unfortunatly you have let her escape to do it again. Slap on the wrist for you.

Hey! I made that joke on the kebab gp after that guy hit you.
Si, if you're not hitting pedestrians, you're being hit as one. Are you on a crusade to prove that walking is dangerous or something?
You work in the city? Any CCTV from nearby offices? A possability.
Glad your ok.

Thats just outrageous.Lucky you were wearing the right gear for walking down our dangerous pavements :!:
Its a sad fact that the Police will not be interested unless you tell them someone is injured. The days of them Policing the roads are long gone.Thats done by cameras now and theyonly get involved if they absolutely have to.Hence mad bat will continue to terrorize the area.

Glad you are OK, Mr Toad! It is both wonderful and bizarre that you
had the right attire for the accident.
It is not right that the police don't want to pursue this matter.
How on earth do they expect the victim to take down the registration
number whilst being hit by a car?
I had my own run-ins with old ladies. My mother-in-law was staying
with us once and another old bat came with flowers to congratulate
my mother-in-law on her birthday. Unfortunately, while parking on
our drive she smashed into our garage door!

My theory.
Hit accelerator instead of brake pedal.
Car goes faster.
Driver panics and pushes harder on wrong pedal.Hey presto wizard prang.
Its a common accident usually in automatics and often while reversing.Ive seen some bizare results including one woman who reversed her car up into a tree in Hendon a few years ago.

Probably the same with that guy on the New naked SV video that was posted on here, he just accelerated into the tree and bounced off it
Good news that your OK though Mr Toad, maybe just bieng in your bike gear is asking for trouble, should have dressed like a normal civ, might have been ok?

re: the helmet. Bike mag (or was it Ride?) proved that you can drop your helmet from waist height and no damage would be caused.
try checking for CCTV as TSM suggested but in reality dont hold any hope to it...
there was CCTV in commercial street but missed the entirety of my accident and ensuing punch up cos ALL the cameras were pointing the wrong way

Me and spidy were going up to the Ace a few weeks ago and a guy decided to jump the lights a tad late and did not see a cyclst coming the other way and bumped him right off. Lucky for him the old church on the corner had CCTV (we did not even notice as they were so small and high up), it was a recording studio and when we were waiting for the police the guy came from inside and said that he saw it happen and if he wanted a copy of the tape.
Sometimes you are luckey and other times not.
Simon!
I've just read this... shocking!
I don't know if it's already been mentioned, but at the very least, report it to the police, as she's left the scene of what could've been a very nasty accident. I don't suppose you, or anyone else, got her number plate?
Insist the police check the CCTV coverage of the area... they might even have captured the incident!
Glad you're alright!

If the police refuse to investigate you can always complain. If I
were in your situation I would write a letter to the Sun newspaper.
In a run-up to a General Election newspapers are keen to publicise all
sorts of scandalous cases involving government agencies.

Glad you're ok.
Don't forget to ask about the CCTV and push the cops more, after all if she didn't see a big bloke like you. What will happen went there is a child standing near one of her wide turns.
Glad your OK...

Agreed, stress that you happening to wear your leathers/her hitting the tankbag were the only thing that stopped it being a lot more serious.

Bloody hell! that is shocking - the fact that she didn't stop is scandalous!
I don't know where my helmet ended up - someone gave it back to me. I expect it now needs replacing
Ride mag did a test on dropped helmets - dropping then from up to 30 feet - and found it had no effect on their protective qualities The conclusion was that as long as your head isn't in the helmet at the time of impact then the essential compressing ability of the helmet isn't compromised.
If youre still not sure then i know that Arai test their helmets for free - some of the others probably do the same.
Mr Toad glad your okay
Frightening really.
As a point of reference when I came off at about 20-25mph and smacked the back of my helmet on the road and then skated a bit on it. I replaced the helmet and then ripped the old one apart.
I managed to rotate the polystyrene (sp?) inner of the helmet around to see where the point of impact would have been and to me there looked like absolutely no visable damage at all, not even slightly compressed polystyrene so in all it was probably absolutely fine. I won't be so hasty to replace my new one if an accident similar to that ever occurs.

cheers folks for all the replies :D
I'm not entirely sure what happend to my helmet - I might have just dropped it, or it could have gone flying down the street - either way it doesn't look damaged.
I did have a look round for CCTV cameras at the time, but didn't see any, so don't think there will be anything forthcoming
I kind of agree with the police response - they must have much more serious things to do

Yeah, unfortunately that might be to scrape someone else off the road after this blind bat flattens them.

Everyone who's saying the Police should have done more, what do you expect them to do? Doorstep absolutely every Nissan Micra driver to see if they're an old codger? Visit every Micra that fits the description and check it for leather marks? With no license plate there's practically nothing that they could do. Even if they somehow found the right guy, with possibly incriminating damage on the car, were there any witnesses that would be able to positively ID him?
Yes, jail all Micra drivers :D
