My bike`s 9 months old now, I`ve done 2400miles on her. I use it mainly in the dry but all wethers really. After winter use I rinse the bike down.

Unfortunately my 9 month old bike now looks older than my Race bike. Having only had Hondas before the SV I`ve never experienced this problem.

The top yoke nut is corroded, the brake calipers have pitting on them, the hose fittings (brake and oil) are corroding. Most of the hose brackets (under engine and on swingarm) are rusting.

The oil cooler guard is covered in rust too!

Should the warranty cover any of this? The bike`s immaculate mostly as it`s kept really clean, you can see I`ve looked after it. It`s stored in my garage with two other bikes.

I reckon you have a claim, however it depends on the dealer...it shouldnt but it does,
if u have no luck with your dealer call suzuki, they will be pleased to hear if one of the dealers isnt being helpfull!

Hope all goes well

Its not down to the dealer to honour the warranty its upto Suzuki to honour it. The dealer will put forwards a claim to suzuki and then suzuki will decide whether it is to be honoured or not. They have the final say.

Paint and finishings arent covered but suzuki can grant the claim under goodwill.

Worth a try.

Oh btw my CBR600 had to have a new swingarm under warranty at only 2k due to corrosion!!

but it is up to the dealer to fill in the form :P

and sometimes they are reluctant to do that!

Nope the dealer fills in the form after its been authorised by suzuki in cases like this.

Dealer calls suzuki - informs them of corrosion problem, suzuki then either authorise the work then and there or explain they want to inspect the bike.

Parts are then ordered if authorisation has been given, work completed and then claim form completed online.

sorry i do this most days! :D

Na with suzuki you do the online form after the work has been completed.

Your actual claim is with the dealer, a simple matter of "goods not fit for the purpose" under the Sale of Goods Act. You might well need to instruct a solicitor as the dealer will try like hell to wriggle out of it.

The Suzuki warranty? This is simply a guarantee that the dealer can call upon should they want to and is a decision between them and Suzuki. It is extra to your consumer rights, and there is no contract with Suzuki at all, just with the dealer.

Naturally Suzuki don't want a bad name and might well decide to step in and sort you out if they feel inclined to do so, just don't count on it. The corrosion factor is unfortunately a pretty standard thing with SVs as they're basically a budget bike, using cheaper components. Though they shouldn't be too bad don't expect Honda-like standards.

Good luck ;).

A quick phone call to a Suzuki dealer in my town, kind of confirmed all you guys said.

His response was along the lines of ".....it`s only a four grand bike, what did you expect? ......good luck!"

Not the response I was hoping for. However the dealer I bought the bike from is 20 miles away and I went there in the first place because they are better at dealing with people. I hope I have more luck.

yes but emphasise 4 grand is four grand and at the end of the day if a 2 yr old car rusted that quick that woudl be unaceptable, but the fact our bikes rot is acceptable!!

keep trying mate

I have an 03 SVS which I have ridden through everything and the cases started corroding. I went into the dealer, they took pics and emailed them to Suzuki, Suzuki said ok & they replaced the parts under warranty. I am about to get the same done for my forks causes the paint is coming off the bottom of the fork leg.

My dealer said I have a two year warranty, regardless of mileage and if Suzuki think I have a claim they will replace them. So if you see fit to make a claim, your dealer is just a go between and I would kick up a fuss if they do anything other than be helpful.

Suzuki will look at it no doubt, generally finish is not covered in all aspects but they have done quite a few in the past..if your bike is less than 2 years old then give it a go. But believe me being polite about it helps you as i can understand why some dealers are unhelpful when customers walk in demanding and F*ing and blinding...and believe me it does happen more than you think...we are only human so obviously get upset!.

Take some photos too yourself if you have the means, that way the less the dealer has to do, makes it easier for you to get a quick answer.

anyway, the not fit for purpose in this case..how would that work?. Would some rust make the bike unfit for use?. If so then i am giving my SV650 back as its not quick enough

My '02 has no real corrosion problems and it is documented that the mark 1 bikes are slightly better finished than the later bikes.
Suzuki have heavily discounted the later bikes compared to the original prices and i cant help wondering whether as a result of this, they have compromised the quality of the manufacturing process. Just a thought. :?

My SV650Sk3's 18 months old, covered 9000 miles and lives outside all the time, my local dealer recently replaced the headstock and one of the peg hangers due to corrosion which must have been a fair amount of labour and they were fine with it, no hassle, took it in, they had a look, took a picture, ordered the parts, sorted it pretty quick and even lent me a bike when it was in. For the record the dealer was All Bikes in Rochdale who I've always had good service from and they remember me whenever I go back in too which is always neat! :)

The little guard on the oil cooler's just started to go on mine too, but to be honest for the aggro I really can't be ar*ed to do anything with that unless something else decides to go.

If you get nowhere with a dealer, just try another one as it's a Suzuki warranty, not just something that's to be done by the place you bought it from.

it is documented that the mark 1 bikes are slightly better finished than the later bikes.

My first SV was a 2000 model which I had from new. It was used all year round but well looked after and the corrosion problems on this were terrible. The rear brake brace arm was rusting around the welds within 6 months, I had to have the forks replaced after a year as well as many other more minor problems.

The bike I have now is a K3, again I had it from new and it has been treated exactly the same and the corrosion problem is not even on the same scale as the 2000 bike. I recently had the left engine cover replaced as the paint was starting to bubble and I have replaced the furry bolts with stainless. The K3 looks far better after two years than my 2000 model did after one.

The problem with warranty claims always seems to be with the dealer. I have had to claim against the warranty four times on the two bikes and have only ever had problems getting the dealer to put the claim in, once this is done the work gets done in double quick time.

On my first bike the small tube in the top of the petrol tank became detached from the tank (the weld had broken) causing petrol to leak from the filler cap when the bike was leaned over to the left. This occurred about three months after the warranty had expired and Suzuki agreed to replace it without a problem the only fight was getting the dealer to put the claim in.

As was said before try going direct to Suzuki if you can't get any joy from a dealer.
