View Full Version : What a load of Porlocks - Ride-out 9th September 2006
Anyone fancy a rideout in Somerset. We've done Wales now.
Again a joint venture with those nice, but strange Chaps (and Chapesses), from the Hornets Nest.
Meet at Tiverton Parkway railway station (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&GridE=-3.3613478860823&GridN=50.916608134918&lon=-3.3613478860823&lat=50.916608134918&search_result=&db=grid&lang=&keepicon=true&pc=&advanced=&client=public&addr2=&quicksearch=ST044139&addr3=&addr1=) at 11.00am to depart at 11.15am - Saturday 9th September 2006
The route is similar to the one published last year in TWO magazines Bikers Map. See here
New Revised Route (http://forums.sv650.org/viewtopic.php?t=38961&start=123)
Please complete below and bring along, no need to hand it to anyone just keep it where it can be easily found. (because you have, inverse murphys law states we won't need it).

Hi guys I don't know if you know but the date you have chosen is also the same day for the 3rd Killspills rally ride with police escort from the Ace Cafe to Whitehall your chance to protest about the diesel spilt on our roads.Last year over 2500 bikers attended. The more that turn up the more notice we will be taken of.More info can be found here www.killspills.org.uk as the date is in Sept perhaps it could be changed? to the following week.
as the date is in Sept perhaps it could be changed? to the following week.
Not really........
It's a joint rideout with the Hornet's Nest and, besides, it's not as if the 2 events clash geographically.
Obviously, if peeps start pulling out of this in favour of the killspills rally then we'll have to think again.

This was not meant as a criticism only an observation that the date clashed with killspills rally.
Obviously people will go where they wish.
I just thought it worth mentioning as the killspills rally is probably the only time we as a biking community may get anyone other than bikers aware of the diesel spill problem. As I am sure many on here as well as on other forums are only too aware of the amount of diesel spilt onto our roads.
The Killspills Rally for a very worthy cause.
However, for some of us it would mean a very long day out indeed.
Hi guys I don't know if you know but the date you have chosen is also the same day for the 3rd Killspills.
Thanks for the heads up, but as Jabba says, I don't think there's much of a clash here.
You obviously feel strongly about this issue, and I'm sure we all share your concerns. Perhaps you would start a new thread in South & West Surfers and the other nearby regions as it will not get the prominence that it deserves buried in this thread.
Any suggestions where the stop for lunch on or near route between Minehead and Lynmouth?
Not sure what you fancy for a lunch stop but last time I went on a rideout down there we parked up in front of the sea wall in lynmouth and had fish and chips from the chippy. There were quite a lot of bikes and it was nice to stretch your legs while wandering up and down the seafront admiring all the other bikes.
I not going to bother putting myself down as a maybe as whenever i plan on doing a rideout lately something always seems to happen at the last minute to prevent me from going. So with any luck I'll keep an eye on here and just turn up on the day. :D
I'm a maybe is Falc is back on the bike then

Sound like a good plan, but we need an indoor option in case of a rainy day, is there bike friendly pub in Lynmouth.
will accommodation be recommended?

Would a Travelodge (http://www.travelodge.co.uk/find_a_hotel/hotel/hotel_id/102/Tiverton) do. It's about a mile away from the start point.
I would of hoped I'd be back on the bike then, so that would be cool but with my luck a stray plane will escape from heathrow and knock me off :?

Theres a couple of pubs in that general area. I know one sprang to mind but I discounted it as it had a steep gravel car park.
Somebody needs to do a recon, If I get time I'll pop down that way and see what i can scope out.

Liz is away this weekend and I like that road down into Lynton / Lynmouth If its dry I intend to go down and have a look round and see if theres any likely pubs we can stop at.
I also think there is what looked like a nice Pub in Watchet that had a big flat tarmac carpark that might be a good place to stop.

Is this being planned as a big day trip or is there an overnight stay involved?
Fizz, heading from Yeovil, would the best way be to Honiton on the 303 then turn to Cullompton?

Yep thats the way I'd go. Theres a nice twisty back road from Honiton out to Cullompton that is absoloutly ace fun. I cant recall the road number off the top of my head I'll look it up tonight for you.
I think its just a day trip though.

OK found it. From Yeovil Follow this
A30 to Crewkerne then
A30 to Chard then
A373 to Honiton then
B3181 to Cullompton then
A361 to Tiverton.

We're not 100% sure we're going yet.

Hiya Folks
It's been a while. I'm back on a bike now (KTM 640 Adventure) and I'll be up for this ride out.
However as I'm a local to this area and it's some of my favourite roads, I'd suggest a slightly different route. The A361 from Barnstaple back to Tiverton is the most boring straight bit of road, ever! zzz
My suggestion is... When you get to the A399 (Blackmoor gate) hang a left and head to South Molton (where I went to school). Then head for A377 and head to Crediton then take the A3072 back to Tiverton.
If you want to go and see some of the beaches and see how bad the traffic is in Barnstaple then from there get on the A377 and head to Crediton then take the A3072 back to Tiverton.
Whatever you decide don't go on the A361 it'sssss so booooorrrrrring.
Oh yeah, if you'd like me to lead I don't mind, but I'm not sure that you'll be able to keep up with my 640 single!
Now it's time to go home and pack for India.

Also I live in Exeter and have lots of floor space for people to sleep on. I'd suggest that if people want to make a weekend of it and stay over for drinks etc, they stay in Exeter. Tiverton is a crap hole with nothing to do in the evenings. I know, I've worked in Tiv for 8 years and lived there for 18 months.
If anyone wants info on places to stay let me know your budget and I'll get it sorted out for you.
Just incase you were wondering I am still up for this and will have new tyres by then too.. will try to scrub them in before this ride though.
I suggest a slightly different route.
Is this (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/twoponds/nest/devon/WhatALoadOfPorlocks2.pdf) what you have in mind?
Having not ridden in this area I've no strong opinions.

Yeah thats pretty much what I had in mind. I spoke to my house mate before I left for India and he suggested that we go to woolacombe(spelling), Croyd and we can have a look at the beaches.
I'm too tired to think about this at the moment. 9:50 am local time = 4:20 am UK time. Coffee anyone? Yes please.

I've already excused myself from the first footy match of the new season
Hi all,
The rideout is now up on The Hornet's Nest. Seems to be some interest, too
We need to sort out meeting points and times. I've suggested Asda petrol station, M4/J32, and Bessaleg HS for the South Wales lot and Morrison's at Cribbs for the Bristol crowd. Do we need anything further south?
morrisons sounds good to me.

I'll probably be up for this, just as long as the SV is back on the road. Its now back together, and all being well with some new rubber on the front the MOT should be straight-forward, so yeah, I'll be there.
Besides, someone's gotta make sure Cheekylemon doesn't get lost on the way home now there's no TomTom to follow :P

I've been thinking........ yeah, I know it's dangerous but I don't do it often.
Seems to me that the South Wales Contingent will be headed down the M49 to the M5, whereas the MoFo's will be meeting at Cribbs, i.e. north of the M49/M5 junction.
Would it be a good idea to have a meeting point further south on the M5, e.g. Sedgemoor Services, where both groups could meet up and head to the main rendezvous togther?
It would also give an additional chance for those who oversleep to catch up.
Good idea?

Would a Travelodge (http://www.travelodge.co.uk/find_a_hotel/hotel/hotel_id/102/Tiverton) do. It's about a mile away from the start point.
Just want to check that the start point hasn't changed before I book a hotel. Anyone else planning on staying at the above mentioned Travelodge on the friday night?
Okay......looks like Mogs is on leave so I've taken the liberty (care of AA Route Finder) of checking times and distances and have come up with the following suggestions based on the main ridout starting at 11:15am as per the first post in this thread.
South Wales Contigent:
Meet at Bassaleg HS, Forge Road at 8:35am (we'll tell Valleyboy it's 8:15am so he gets there on time!)
Leave Bassaleg at 8:45am and travel the 41 miles to Gordano Services, J19 M5, to arrive at 9:35am where we will meet up with........
The Bristol Mofos
Meet at Gordano Services, J19 M5, at 9:35am. Park-up in the main CAR PARK (not the lorry park ](*,) ). This is right near the main service area building so I can use the bog. And get a burger.
Leave Gordano Services at 9:50am and travel the 65 miles to Tiverton Parkway Railway Station (leave M5 at J27 and take the A361), arriving at 11:00am.
Does this seem okay for everyone?

Meet at Gordano Services, J19 M5, at 9:35am somewhere near the main service area building so I can use the bog.
However many times you say that people will still wait in the lorry area (among the diesle spills  )....so theres a challenge. The bike bay is round by the main buiding cafe. Its not big but theres room round there.
Just want to check that the start point hasn't changed before I book a hotel.
Nothing about the ridout itself has changed for quite a while. Start 11:15am from Tiverton Parkway Railway Station. Route is the amended one found at the foot of the first post on the first page
Tim says that he can't face the trip on his Bros. I trust that you're trying to talk him out of that?
