Please make sure you have a full tank of fuel before starting the route. It is about 135 miles with regular regroup stops and an hour break for lunch (The Red Barn), we should be back at Tiverton Travelodge at about 6.00pm, this will be the official terminus and final group photo opportunity. The actual riding time is about 3 hours.

It would be rude not to, already looking forward to this one now :smt026 I should be run in by then
The route we didn't do? Who's leading this one? I did my tour on the last one
Just a thought though, maybe an additional stop halfway through the A39 would be a idea to regroup, it was a long trek from Dunster to the Red Barn.
The route we didn't do?
Plenty of time to refine the route, if you recall we went direct from Barnstable to Tiverton (wisely as we where running late), missed out Crediton.
Obviously I will have to consult my social diary but will try my best to make this one.. this will mean that I will have to grab someones couch for that weekend!

what is the benifit of the 2 cans?
None. Its mainly for cosmetic. however at the time they gave a slight advantage in power over a single can, but at a different part of the rev range.
I might come to this, really not sure, depends on a few things. i Know that BBC is off to see her brother possibly that weekend. We'll see. However i will need floor space :)
Pre-Planning Prevents Poor Performance.
Last year I made the mistake of calling for a ride leader (Point) and Tail End Charlie (TEC) on the day, thanks to Beenz for steeping up to the plate and doing most, but I think I was a little unfair.
I am calling for volunteers.
Before you stick your hand up, please read on so that you understand what all the jobs involve.
The method is known as Second Person Drop-off or Drop off. (plagiarised from another site, tweaked to suit).
The Point.
Knows the route well,
Makes him (her) self known to the whole group.
Rides within the law all times,
At junctions (where the route is not straight on) indicates by pointing to the kerb the approximate location for number two (The Marker) to stop, this should be a safe place that can be seen by the following riders.
Should keep at least two riders in rear vision at all times, if you don’t you risk running out of markers forcing you to stop.
The Marker (you have already volunteered for this job)
Anyone can be Marker. The person immediately behind Point automatically becomes “The Marker”, if you are in this position you must not fail to do this job. Do not pass Point. When Point indicates a marking position you must stop in a safe place, take note the direction that Point has taken and pass that information to all following riders, you must stay at your post until TEC approaches and indicates for you to continue. (This could be a very long wait, do not think that you’ve missed TEC). TEC may temporarily pass you, but you must overtake TEC as soon a safe to do so, TEC will create an opportunity.
Tail End Charlie (TEC).
TEC is possibly the harder job, there is always a strong temptation to nail it in order to keep up, this must be resisted, there will be no-one following you to call for help and get you out of a ditch.
TEC knows the route well,
Makes him (her) self known to the whole group.
is always in last place,
if you (TEC) see a stationary rider you must stop to check on them.
you must pick up Markers.
The Peloton
The peloton is made up of all the riders between Point and TEC. No-one passes Point and TEC will not pass you. Peloton riders have a responsibility to ride safely. Your actions or inactions should not put another rider in danger. Do not undertake, other riders will not be expecting it, and maintain your distances. Within the peloton you may ride as slow or a fast as you like within the strictures already outlined. It is not unusual for the faster riders to act as Markers early on in the route, once picked up work their way through the peloton to act as Marker again. This is acceptable. If you are going to leave to group for any reason you should let Point, TEC or the Ride Leader know your intent.
Ride Leader (often the person who has planned the route.) Jabba & I have shared this role previously.
Will know the route (but perhaps not very well),
Identified him (her) self to the whole group.
Arrange for Point and TEC to be identified.
Make a count of all riders in the group.
Give the start up briefing, safety notes etc.
Identify meet up points.
Call the end of comfort breaks etc.
Arrange a search for missing riders from pre-determined stops.
May take Point but never TEC
Ensure everyone gets home safely (perhaps not always possible with riders coming from a wide geography).
I am thus looking for volunteers to share the Point and TEC jobs
Tiverton Parkway to Dunster,
Dunster to Woolacombe
Woolacombe to Crediton
Crediton to Tiverton Parkway
Ok, I'll step up .
Put me down for whatever needs doing. Hopefully you can get a few more volunteers as well.
One point. could somebody sort out some vis jackets for Mr Point and (especially) Mr TEC . Sometimes as a marker you are waiting for absolutely ages for the TEC to come through, and are left thinking that you've missed him, or misinterpreted a friendly wave etc.

Thanks Mac, I wont make any selections just yet, I will sort Hi-Viz waistcoats.
Very well put Mogs, given that I've already been 'Point' for part of last years run I guess it's only right that someone else has the pleasure for this time. :D
I don't want to hold up the whole group with my slow riding again this time.;)
Mac99, you get my vote for point.
Hey, if you get desperate I'll quite happily do TEC for the day. I've not ridden the route before but it doesn't look too complicated to follow, and I'll probably have the TomTom fitted. I've got the travel from Worcester and back that day to race like a loon so I'm happy to stick at the slowest pace. I'll even wear the hi-viz with pride, even though if plans succeed I may be on a TLR by then.

Not being funny or anything but I might humbly suggest that the point man does actually need to know the route and have ridden it before. Otherwise your all going to get mightly lost. It might look easy to follow but some of those roads are not signposted very clearly and IMHO you dont want to be glancing down at a Tom Tom every five minutes with a group of riders behind you. it might get awfully messy if somebody decides to stop quick because they've gone the wrong way...
Just my 2pence worth.

Fizz I never said anything about point mate only TEC (tail end charlie). I have no desire to lead this rideout even if I'd ridden it a million times, I've lead small groups on several occasions but wouldn't fancy those numbers.

I think the same requirments are required for TEC as well you need to know the area.
I lost a few on a rideout last year, because I know the area well that we were in I was able to quickly work out where they had gone and I picked them up again no problem
Sorry it sounds like I'm picking holes, I'm not meaning it to. Its just that if you are point man or TEC people will rely on you if they get stuck and its just extra hassle if you are just as lost as they are.
Getting the new bike tomorrow and depending on how comfy I get with it will join you guys.
Not been down that way in a while...

You'd be very welcome Lisa. If you do decide to come, I've found before that its better for newbie riders to sit up the front behind the lead rider, but to not drop off to mark the way. I've noticed before that if you get mid pack or at the pack then you have to ride that little bit harder in order to keep up. I remember Mrs Cuffy last year struggling in the morning I said to her after lunch to sit up front and I think she found it much easier after that.
;) sounds good to me

Have you thought about a sweeper let alone a tail end charlie, to go find the missing ones WHEN someone gets lost. I'd normally do that as I like riding around all over the place and know the roads but I shall be in Spain :smt120
If youve got a lot of people worth having a go finder

You did. But that proves the system works. If you stay where you were put then someobdy wll come back for you.
IIRC that day we got split up because somebody didnt sit at a junction and wait for the TEC.

Aha, the terrific couple return. It would be good to catch up with you both again. :riding:
Fizz, are you volunteering?
Jabba, I know you don’t mind being TEC, I didn’t want to volunteer you.
Carlos, thanks for the offer, I would prefer to use riders with local knowledge and experience of large group riding if I can, neither do a want to force someone to do the whole trip. I maybe back to you.
Lisa, Fizz is quite right, there can be implied pressure on riders further down the order to ride faster, this pressure is all of their own making. Let me be absolutely clear on this - NO ONE NEEDS TO RIDE BEYOND THEIR COMFORT ZONE. This is not a "Scratching, knee down session" that is best left to small groups who know each other very well, this is best described as a "Tourist Bimble" If you find yourself in position 2 and are unhappy taking on the marker role, wave number three on thus falling back to position 3 or 4. Point is asked to ride within the speed limits, any faster puts undue pressure on novice riders.
Rich, I won’t elect a sweeper beforehand but it’s a good idea, if we lose someone we will take action to find them. I’m sure you only told us about Spain because you deeply wish our sympathy, you won’t get it.
If you think you can do "Point" or "TEC", and there’s a section you would like to do – say so. I would prefer people are happy to take on the role than me draft anyone, who then feels obliged to say yes.

Mogs - The section from Minehead until you turn right onto the A3123 I know very well. I'm quite happy to lead that bit no probs.
As for the rest of it I didnt get out at the weekend, the weather was to cr*ppy. I dont want to volunteer for the whole lot when I dont know the whole route well enough. I'm going to try and get out again but I dont know when that will be.

Just use the force init ;)
Im a more possible maybe now, which is good. Im good at large group riding (Most of the selkent rides are 30+ bikes), however, im coing along for the fun of it for once as id be doing a fair few mile that weekend (then riding to wales the following weekend)
