View Full Version : 'puter problem
I've lost the sound on my 'puter. I've checked the wiring to the speakers and everything looks ok there. The only changes that have been made recently was upgrading to internet explorer 7.0. The problem hs arisen since then.
Any ideas as to why this has happened? Could to two be connected? How do I fix it??
If this is only happening when you go to a web site with sound then it could be you've got the :
Menu option: Tool -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> "play sounds in Web Pages" tick box unticked.
If this is happening all the time i.e. when attempting to listen to your favourite Bananarama CD then in your sytem tray on the desktop, look for the Speaker icon, select this then unselect the Tick box that say's, "Mute".

This box is ticked

There is no speaker icon in the system tray (assuming this is the collection of icons at the bottom right of the screen)

put tick in "Place volume icon in the taskbar"

Many thanks. The speaker icon now resides bottom right. Clicking on it shows the mute box to be empty.

Double click on the speaker icon and check that the Wave is not muted and the level is turned up.
Is the volume level set high enough?
Also, stupid questions I know but....is the volume for the speakers high enough? Are the speakers turned on? Is the speaker cable going into the correct socket in the PC?

Non of the boxes are ticked (5 in total), and all the levels are at 3/4 max

Speakers are on (evidenced by calming blue light), cable connected correctly (green Jack plug to green socket), all volumes at 3/4 max.

OK rule out IE7 by installing it and going back to your previous version of IE.
I doubt its the IE7 ugprade though, What version of Windows are you running. Let me guess last time it worked fine and then you shut your computer down and powered it off and it hasnt worked fine since.
If so I'd wager that you soundcard has a hardware fault and its broken. Either that or the soundcard drivers want re-installing.

Arrrggggghhhhh!!!!! Now you're getting geeky.... Not a good thing for a technophobe like me. Where do I find this card thingy?? How do I know if its broken or not? Ohhhhhh ... its all toooooo much, I think I need some gym time.
Later guys, many thanks for all your responses.

It'll be inside the puter, its probably built into the mainboard. IMHO its probably your soundcard has a hardware fault on it.
One more thing to try have you got a friend you can borrow a set of speakers off of. As it could be that the speakers themselves are broken. Wouldnt hurt to rule that out to.
What I'd do if I were you is take your PC somewhere and get somebody to look at it for you. IMHO though dont take it a PC World, If you can find small computer shop local to you take it in there and get them to have a look it
It could be that the IE7 install has ****ted the sound card driver.
You could try going into control panel and removing the sound card from device manager.
If you then reboot, the OS will detect the sound card again and reload the drivers.
This has worked for me in the past when things have stopped working for no apparent reason
Might want to get a non-technophobe to give you a hand with this.
Seems like some people have had similer issues.

Sadly, I have no friends, non-technophobe or otherwise  .
However, I'm a resourceful lass....
So, into the device manager (found that)
Clickety on the "Sound , video, controller " bit
Locate sound thingy (Sigma tel c-major audio)
Double cickety on this gives me the properties box
Click on Driver tab....
Cool so far
Do I now click on the "uninstall" button????
If not, and if any of the above is wrong would you be so kind as to provide idiot proof instructions please
That should do it, or you should get the option to unistall just from right clicking it in device manager.
You then need to reboot.
Good luck
I tried reinstalling the driver, that did not work.
Stupid question time ....
How do I get rid of explorer 7.0 and install 6.0 again?

Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs.
Scroll down through the list and you should see Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 Listed, over on the right hand side will be a button that says "Remove" click it and it'll uninstall, Reboot your PC and it'll be gone, as part of the Uninstall process it should re-install IE6
Thanks hun, 6.0 restored.
Now then, with all the volumes whacked up to max there is a faint sound to be heard on my speakers. I'm assuming this means I need some new ones!!!!
Many thanks to all involved for their advice and instructions.
I'm going off the the kitchen now, where nothing is a mystery, and where I know how to use all the tools and gadgets to perfection.
Cheers mi dears.
