View Full Version : Taunton Christmas Drinks 16th December 2pm Perkin Warbeck
Just saw this;
http://forums.sv650.org/viewtopic.php?t=48818
Bit too far away for me, in this weather at least! The guy's and gal's over at www.southwestbikers.com are having a Christmas munchie tonight that I unfortunately found out about too late to join in.
Who would be up for a little gathering to slurp some Christmas drinkie-poos in or near Exeter? Maybe next weekend? If so, where? I'm not clued up on the more biker-friendly pubs... Would be good to meet some local SV-ers!

We could maybe push the boat out a little and ride up to Taunton or similar and see if some of the Bristol or Wilts members would like to join us. Failing that is the Showman on Cowick Street too close to home :?:
I like the idea of a SWS drinkies, one here from Wilts is up for it. Need to firm up the date/time/venue and see who else is game.
Hi Normski. Good to see you on here, hope your keeping well. I was going to give you a ring but you've found my thread now. The Showman is just a two minute walk from my door, so (depending on the weather ) I'd prefer a ride to Taunton! This'll make you happy too I guess Beenz. :)
I remember The Showman when it was The Road House. The rows of scruffy (& not so scuffy) cruisers that you used to see outside has been replaced by rows of invalid carriages on Sundays when the old folks turn out for the roast dinner!
As for date/time/venue, is this weekend too soon? I'm clueless on good pubs in Taunton. Not much help am I? :D

I don't think this weekend would be too soon, any later would get swamped in the xmas rush.
Does anyone favour daytime or evening? Nicer riding in daylight but maybe harder to get away.
Meet wouldn't have to be strictly Taunton - we could go A303 and more easterly or A38 and northerly - or whatever, if it helped to meet up with others.
I think we should plan loosely and then confirm towards the end of the week.
Beenz, where in Wilts is Nam?
Sounds good to me Normski! Daytime or evening, either gets my vote. Daytime is a bit better though I guess.
Maybe just firming up on the day, Sat or Sun, would be helpful. Just so that I can let the missus know to not schedule in DIY... Not critical though.
Hope some others can make it, be good to meet up. Ha! no offence Norm.    I'll catch you before the off and we'll ride up together if you like.
I don't mind the dark that much, or the cold that much, I don't even mind the wet too much  but I can honestly say that I do not really dig the cold wet darkness on a bike
In a nutshell daytime would be better for me, could to with the rest of the SWS Brizzle lot to share thoughts also though.

Day light would be best, so would a bike that worked.
Post up a firm time and place and I will see what excuses I can think up
I'll start the bidding at Sunday, 13:00. Destination undefined as I don't know Taunton or anywhere else too well! Do I need a passport?
Normski

In Zummerset you need a good head for cider! :P  but no passport. (yet)
Do we want to meet at pub or cafe?
I know the Taunton area a bit so could suggest a venue, but I'd rather wait and see who may want to come along and maybe fine tune where we meet to suit.
Forecast online for Saturday not too bad, Sunday's not up yet, but they haven't yet been right this year!
Sounds good,
Need time and date etc so i can commit 8) or decline
Busy time of year work wise so cant say a defo yes
OK Normski, looks like you and I are definitely up for this. Can you put your **** on the block and lay down a venue, time and date? My lack of pub knowledge disqualifies me from making suggestions  I'm up for pub or cafe.
That'll give others something to plan against. If it ends up just being you and me Norm rest assured you'll get a pint (if pub) or toasted teacake (if cafe!) outta me.
BTW - Isn't it amazing that the Met Office can't put out a decent weather forecast for the Exeter area? They're right here! Just look outta the Goddamn window fellas!

IIRC theres a Yates in the pedestrianised area of Taunton and then round the corner somewhere opposite Waterstones I think but maybe a bit further along that road is a Wetherspoons as well.
Both are huge and should be easy to find if you don't know Taunton very well.

C--k on the block  ouch. After such treatment I may not be up for anything
Regards time either sat. afternoon or early evening (i.e. not leaving Exeter until 12.30 at earliest) or Sunday a bit earlier ( leave Exeter 11.30- 12.30)
Venue :?: Although I'm not a fan of Little Chefs we could meet at the Podimore one. It's on the A303 North of Yeovil where the A37 branches North towards Beenz (who left me to find out myself where Nam was :( )
Anyone interested let us know your opinion on this please.

Fizzwheel your post came in whilst I was typing my previous one. Can make it Taunton if preferred.

Beenz has the advantage that he knows where Podmore is, tis where we waited while Liz recovered Cuffy's pillion seat after it did its aerobatics on one of my rideouts. Also theres f*ck all at Podimore apart from a Little Chef, probably not best for a social meet up. Also its one of the worst Little Chef's I've ever been in, often they are out of all the good stuff on the menu and often its not cooked well. ( I used to drive the motorways of England for a living I know alot about Little Chef's  )
Theres also a Wetherspoons in Yeovil itself about 10 minutes away from Podimore, if you fancy that. It does mean going to Yeovil though
Don't pick something just to accomadate us, I've no idea what we're doing at the moment, Just pick a date and a location that suits the majority. If we can make it we will.
I know Podimore even less than Taunton! I don't like the sound of F-all there and fizzwheel makes the Little Chef sound awful! Taunton sounds good with a Yates and a Wet-her-spoons. What's parking like for those places? Yeovil could be a go-er too.
Well, someone's gotta make a decision so I'll say Taunton Wetherspoons at 13:00 on Sunday 17th Dec. I hope this satisfies enough people to draw a decent crowd? :D Normski, this should be good for a 12:00-ish set-off from Exeter.
The forecast for Sunday? Sunny, dry, cold at 7c but not very windy at all. Lovely! C'mon! 8)
Well, no-one's jumped on yet so I'll take the liberty of trying to change the time. Mrs has just dropped plans to go Crimbo shopping on Sunday on me. Common problem this time of year I guess...
How about Saturday, Same place, 1400? The weather still looks good. I think I may go whatever the turnout is! :D

Phil - Saturday will be better for me too! I'm working friday night which is why I wanted the later start but we could meet say 12.45 at Moto services (Granada) Exeter.
BTW the correct day for xmas shopping is the following sunday although the girls don't seem to understand this.
Anyone else out there :?:

There are two Wetherspoons in Taunton - the larger is the Perkin Warbeck on East Street - is this the one we want to meet at?
The other is the Coal Orchard on Bridge Street
Nice one! OK Norman 'yer on. See you at 1245 on Saturday at Moto services. I'll top up on fuel there so I'll see you at the filling station? Classy...
As for the choice of Wetherspoons, I'll leave that up to you and/or others if I may. I really have no experience of Taunton!
And yeah, mentioning others... Helllooooo?! The weather forecast looks about as good as you're gonna get in December. Come out and play!

Yup, not been back long from a blat over to Bristol, cracking day for the bike
Will let you bods know on here tomorrow if I can make it (read the tea leaves and all looks good  ) Got a semi 'works' do tomorrow night so as long as I don't end up face down in the gutter I should be fine for Saturday. I'll check the web for how to find the meeting services and useful direcgtions as I have no clue currently where Wet Her Spoons is in Taunton.

Thats the one I was thinking of. Foods quite good in there and its massive so you should be able to get a table.
We won't be attending as Liz has to work for a couple of hours tomorrow and then we're going to go and finish off the christmas shopping.
Heres a Multimap Linky (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&GridE=-3.09937&GridN=51.01473&lon=-3.09937&lat=51.01473&search_result=East%20Street%2C%20TAUNTON%2C%20TA1&GridN=51.01473&GridE=-3.09937&lang=&db=GB&keepicon=true&place=East%20Street%2C%20TAUNTON%2C%20TA1&pc=&advanced=true&addr2=east%20street&client=public&addr3=Taunton&overviewmap=&scale=5000URL) for those of you that don't know Taunton well, looks like meet is at 14:00

Fizz, in the highly likely event that I'll not catch up with you and Liz before Crimbo, have a really good one. :drink:

I'm not 100% sure, but a 5 minute walk away in the Multi Storey carpark round the back off the councill offices. I'm pretty sure theres some bike spaces in or very near that carpark.

I wanna go :(
Yay! Off we go!
Norm, do fancy absconding from the boredom of the M5? The old B3181 through Cullompton and Willand? The A30/A303 then left after Newcott through Corfe? Depends on time I guess...
See you tomorrow! Be good to see others there too. :D

Going to have to miss this one I'm afraid. If it was on the Sunday then I would have came as I would have been down that way regardless, but alas I need to start my Christmas shopping tomorrow.
Have a good one and I'm sure I'll be down sometime in the new year has I haven't done the A38 for quite some time.
Last nights beers and curry ned time to settle  Will post here in an hour to make a decision...
I guess its about an hour and a half to two hours from here.
Still a tad unsettled
Will have to give this one a miss I'm afraid. Don't want to delay procedings. I'll go out later on locally.
Have a good time and Merry Christmas. Will catch up with you bods in the new year on a rideout or another meeting or something.

I had a flat battery so juts ran started it and rode round and round in circles until I felt safe enough to get to a filling station as also had no petrol  . So I opted for the possibiltiy of not starting it near home rather than Taunton. Sorry.

Phil and I met at Exeter and rode to Taunton by the scenic route - no motorway and only one short shower - very enjoyable. Lunched at Wetherspoons but no one else turned up :o ! Was it something we said?
Anyway the weather was about as good as you can get in December and we had a good ride there and back, we're up for something similar in the new year so let us know what we can do to tempt you out
Yep, as Normski said, a cracking ride. Short I guess at about 70 miles, but the weather was tip-top for December. :D
You lot missed out! There was an unexpected visit to the pub by the 'Swedish Free Beer and Pole Dancing Academy'. Then Suzuki GB turned up and gave free GSX-R 1000's to everyone carrying a crash helmet...
Thanks for the ride and lunch Norman. I'll look forward to catching up again after Christmas/New Year. Maybe we should book those Swedish girls again to get the others out...

Really sorry to have missed out, the pole dancing sounds quite fun
Hopefully me and others will make the next one...
