View Full Version : Fitting CBR600 Wheel (or probably not!)
I am (or was) in the process of fitting CBR600 (Mid 90's) wheels to my 2001 SV curvy. As I mentioned in my last posting (regarding speedo drive alternatives) the rear is a known way of fitting a 5 inch rear wheel but I hadn't found any info' on the front. I'd had a measuring session with the Honda front wheel (looked good at this point) and sleeved the bearings to suit the spindle. Eventually tried the front in tonight and it fitted perfect BUT it wont turn :!: The floating disc rivets on the Honda discs are slightly further out and catch on the pad retaining stops of the calliper mounting brackets (That's why there is a good 5mm or so of unused disc on the inner edge of the standard rotors) Too much so to tickle off with a file :!: So unless someone has a good idea how to fix this, then the project is off: I'm not prepared to run different style wheels front and rear like some people have.

Resurrecting old posts! Bit of a big jump this, but I've found that some 17" blade wheels fit perfectly into SRAD forks, long road for a shortcut though. I believe VFR would be fine as well, not sure about CBR, but if memory serves some of those are in the same style (mine is a dymag, but the sizing is identical of course)
Bit of a shock to see my old post resurected:!: Anyway, I now have CBR600F3 wheels fitted front and rear. I've been meaning to post some pictures for a while but just havent got around to it. The rear was easy, the breakthrough to making the front work was changing to GSXR calipers on adapter plates and changing the speedo drive to the opposite side of the wheel (requires quite heavy modification). I am happy with the results, so much so I intend to stick with the CBR wheels and have bought a second set. I'm currently painting one set and will then swap them around whilst I paint the other set. I intend to have sporty/summer/track day tyres (currently Supercosa SC1/SC2) on one set and touring/winter tyres on the other set (Continental Road Attack).
At last! The CBR600 F3 wheels have been fitted a few weeks now, but I wanted to paint them up before posting some pictures. I know other people have fitted the CBR600 F3 rear but I don't know of anyone who has fitted the front as well (understandable as there are problems to overcome). Comment, feedback and questions are welcomed (good or bad).

What size tyre are you running on the rear??

Lookin' good! That's a good number of spokes for an SV :) Top mounted brake caliper I see, interested in how that's mounted... I'm guessing you added a lug to the back of the swingarm...
A proper writeup is needed, the F3 swap's a fairly popular one for the US guys so they'll be interested in this for sure.
Top marks
Still running 160/60 but would take 170. Some people have even fitted 180's on these 5 inch rear rims, but personally I wouldn't advise it - you're back where you started, i.e. a tyre you can't use all of.

That was done some time back, but still works well with the F3 wheel. The lug to stop the brake plate rotating is simply a cap head allen screw bolted to the inside of the swinging arm. You have to drill a hole but strength is not an issue.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I'm looking at a different rear wheel which calls for some daft construction y'see, this is about as close as I've seen to what I'd have to do.

Nice bike NedSVS, quality conversion. Can I enquire as to why you'd bother to change your wheels, is it cosmetic or to be different or to see if it can be done.......or are there any advantages lower weight etc?

the SV650 puts a 160 tyre on a 4.5inch rim whilst most other manufacturers would use a 5.0inch rim for a 160 tyre. All the last generation of sports bikes using 160's ran them on 5.0inch rims (FZR600 & thundercat, ZZR600 and of course CBR600F3). For the same size tyre you have a slightly bigger contact patch and can use more of the tyre (i.e. narrower or no chiken strips). I know some of the "super heros" in the Org manage to use all the tyre on the standard 4.5inch rim, but ironically you are more likely to do it on sport/touring rubber than a full on sports tyre because the manufacturers make them a slightly less rounded shape. BT014's are the worst I've seen; on a 4.5 inch rim the ends of the tread are almost vertical - Rossi couldn't use it all!

Also, it looks good  The F3 rear wheel and carrier's pretty damn heavy, though, if memory serves... Heavier than the Bandit wheel, but less boring.

Does the bike handle any different with a 5" rear, I can see why you would get a bigger contact patch, but with a "flatter" tyre the turn might not be as fast (extra weight, rotating forces etc and tallers tyres tip in better.
I not trying to knock anything anyone does, it's just that my bike shall be fiddled with during this winter and I'm looking for ideas and what could be the best set up for myself. USD front end (GSXR - 600 or 750), change of rear shock (ZXR 636 or GXSR) and wheels????????? are all on the cards, but I need to understand the benefits of changing what already in a great road bike before I commit my time and cash as I'm a little price sensitive. I'd sooner learn from others mistakes and not mine;) . I think your bike looks great, the wheels look just right (I hate 3 spokes, reminds me of boy racers in their Vauxhalls:mad: ) and the calipers front and rear look very professional, nice one.

Handling doesn't feel significantly different. Some people on the forum have fitted 180's on 5.5inch rims and report that the bike still turns in quickly. The contact patch is slightly bigger in width because the tyre has an extra 1/2 inch of width at the rim, so its curve across the profile is flatter and more of it contacts the ground. Whether or not this equates to significantly more grip is debateable.

Can you tell me more about that front brake conversion?

That would be me:cool: and Yes it does give more grip!

Calipers are 2001 GXR750 items. The adapter plates were from High Speed assault (.com) in the USA, but they were talking about ceasing production last thing I heard. Don't panic though as Ben (21Quest) is looking into having a batch machined up soon. The brakes are significantly better.

Did you make new/other plates for your rear wheel/chain adjustment? Because they look different like mine...
Looks good!! :)

Yes, they were made from 3mm stainless. The standard SV ones are a bit thin and end up concave after tightening the spindle numerous times. These are a bit more robust and a lot more corrosion resistant.

i got a 05 gsxr 600 rear wheel can i fit that to the sv has anybody tried it. i got it with the front end i bought. and would there be any benifit to having a 180 tire on the sv

I tried an earlier GSXR600 wheel and it was too wide at the hub, so I'm not optomistic that it will fit. A quick measure with rule and straight edge will tell you what tou need to know, i.e. sprocket and brake disc alignment. Bandit 1200 wheel is the known way to go for minimum hassle on fitting a 180 rear.

I have a pair of carby SV Dymags that I may be selling soon, bit scruffy £500 the pair.
It depends on the sale of my bike, if it stays i'll sell the front and keep the rear.

before I fitted the 1200bandit rear wheel I bought an Srad750 rear and JHS racing said they could get it to fit but it would be a bespoke fitment and couldn't tell me how much it would cost. So I sold it on Ebay and bought the Bandit rear! As for the wider tyre it looks so much better and you get a bigger contact patch!

I know this is an old topic, but I'm really interested in the F3 wheel conversion.
Can you tell me how this is done as I can't find anyone in the Netherlands.
I'm also looking at a Bandit 1200 wheel, but can't find a conversion kit.
Is your bike a pointy or a curvy? The rear was relatively easy - the front wasn't! You are going to need some engineering skills or help from someone who has them and suitable tools including a lathe if you can't find a conversion kit. I seem to remember there was a kit available on an American website - but that was a long time ago.

The conversion kit is still available on TWF site, although its for GSXR rear wheel.
You need to send the sprocket carrier & brake carrier

My curvy has a GSXR rear wheel conversion, but I bought a bike with it done before I got it
I have been meaning to post the final outcome for ages - as someone has resurrected my old post I think the time could be now!
I always intended to swap the Honda CBR600F wheels for Marvic Pentas made for CBR600F3 - but I had to wait a long time to find a pair at sensible money. After crack testing, powder coating and some new bearings they cost me a bit over £500. The wheel refurbishment work was done by Steve Turner at TPCS:

He did a great job and emailed me photos of each stage.

Before someone asks - the block of wood under the sidestand is to keep the bike as upright as possible for photographing.
