View Full Version : sky tv problem?
since getting the tinternet i have cancelled sky tv & making do with the free chanels. but now im getting a "no satellite signal is being recived" message.
as i have not got an Ariel i cant watch tv. have i been totaly cut off? the weather is not to bad so i dont think its that. & im thinking i cant phone sky.
Try unplugging the power to the sky box and then putting it back in again. Mine does this sometimes and the only way to clear it is to disrupt the power supply.

You sure you actually disconnected the power. Not just switched it off?
i pulled the plug out for a few minuites
Well the only other thing I can think of is either the cable to the dish has come loose / damaged or the dish has moved and is no longer pointing in the right direction. It only has to be a degree or two out to completely loose the signal.
:?
hoping it fixes it self through the night.......

happened to us, turn it all off, take the card out and wipe it, put it back in, turn it all on again and ours worked. HTH :)

That message appears when there is no signal (funny enough)
Cancelling your subscription wouldn't cause this to happen.
Check the coax at the back of the STB hasnt been pulled out of the plug (the plug screws on, it isnt a tight fit and sometimes can pull out)
Failing this, you have either got a faulty LNB, your dish has got a knock and been knocked off the satellite, the tuner is faulty in the STB (By any chance is it an Amstrad?) or you have water in your coax.
(Or some joker has cut your coax)
Pete
not amstrad
cant be cut as its too high
i will investigate tomorrow
thanx all
Other things you can try is going into 'System Setup' and one of the options will show the satalite signal etc.. Installer mode is also 'System Setting' + 010 + Select (i think). You could try a reset from there. If all else fails
Ok seems like few know the full reset method of a sky box.
Leave it unplugged for about 30seconds, then hold the 'Back Up' button on the box and plug it back in, keep holding the button down untill all three lights come one and a message on screen saying that the box software is being upgraded.
Now make sure that the sat cable is installed first properly.
I take no responsability if you box fails to work properly after the full reset method. I have done it several times and never had a problem myself though. But i has had to be done once as my box went all haywire.

DO NOT DO THIS
He has no satellite signal! it wont be able to download new software!
Will leave the box stuck in update mode.

Err, thats why i said check first that its connected. Saying all that the tuner in the box could have gone pop or the LNB is gone or with all this wind the dish may have moved
It happened to me where it said there was no satalite signal, and i had to reload the software to sort it out.

The probability of it being a software error is much smaller than it being a fault in other areas. If the other areas are not ruled out first he runs the risk of having his box stuck in update mode.
The software reload feature you talk about is not commonly known about because it is there for engineers, not end users - to prevent problems like this happening.

last night i did a signal test & the 2 bars were blank..............this morning they are both betwwen 60-75%?? but its still saying no signal  the code in the corner is 36 if this helps?
Go outside and smack the satellite dish with a broom handle, if it don't work your hitting it the wrong way.

Have you tried ringing sky TV and asking their view?
Maybe your sky card needs replacing?
Matt

I had this a few times at my last job (sky required for the footy). It turned out to be a combibnation of:
The sky boxes being rubbish,
The sky boxes getting too hot,
The sky boxes being rubbish.
In the end, we got some blocks of wood to separate the 3 boxes (yes, 3), let them cool down with the power removed and then using the System Setup thing listed on the 1st page (you can find proper instructions on the sky site I believe). Took a few attempts at the system setup to get em working again, but it eventually fixed itself.
As everyone else has said, check all the connections and whatnot.
Hope this helps you :)

get a diji areial and a cheapo diji box or plug the areial into your sky box and see if that makes any diff.
No TV  You'll just have to stay on here longer to make up for it
Good luck sorting it out.

£21 for the basic package? We're paying £18 a month for ours :? As for the digibox things, we had the top-up TV thing and had a crap signal most of the time so got rid of it and switched to sky.

As far as I can remember, to get even the £free to air" channels, you still need a decoding card. If you have cancelled your subscription, they may have also cancelled your viewing card, so you need to call and discuss it with them. For a price (about a tenner I think) they can provide a card just for the "free to air" channels.
I may be wrong, but it sounds like it's worth checking it out....
.
Or you can buy a replacement box from eBay for very much less than £65.
