Now that the poll for dates is closed. I’m going to propose that we adopt Fizzwheels route because he’s already recce’d it, he will volunteer the Point/TEC ;) and we might encourage members from the deep south.

Meet at Little Chef Podimore (http://www.travelodge.co.uk/find_a_hotel/hotel/hotel_id/104/YeovilPodimore)

at 11.00am to depart at 11.15am - Saturday 15th September 2007.

Please complete below and bring along, no need to hand it to anyone just keep it where it can be easily found. (because you have, inverse murphys law states we won't need it).

Meet up locations etc.

All times are departure, unless stated

Bassaleg HS (A46 09.00am
Gordano Services (M5) 09.50am
Podimore Little Chef 10.45am (arrive)
The Route 11.15 am (depart) Link to Map (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/twoponds/sv650/dorset/Dorset_Doddle.pdf).
Podimore Little Chef 6.00pm (arrive)

Please make sure you have a full tank of fuel before starting the route. It is about 142 miles with regular regroup stops and an hour break for lunch (The Fiddleford Inn (http://www.fiddlefordinn.co.uk/)), we should be back at Podimore at about 6.00pm, this will be the official terminus and final group photo opportunity. The actual riding time is about 3 hours.

Edit Fizz :

This is the proposed route. It needs a little fine tuning

Start and Finish at Podimore Services, where the A37 & A303 meet, Has a little chef, and fuel and plenty of room for bikes to park.

A quick hop down the A303, and then take the A356 to Crewkerne, stay on the A356 and head to Dorchester. ( this is a mix of twisty technical B roads and A roads with wide sweeping bends and straights )

This comes out on the A37, head for Dorchester after a few miles take a left for Charminster, and Follow the A352 through Sydling St Nicholas and Cerne Abbas, ( more twisty B road fun, Theres a car park and an Ice Cream van by the Cerne Giant at Cerne Abbas, so could stop here for a leg stretch )

Keep Following the A352, Just before Sherborne take the A3030 towards Sturminster Newton. ( nice fast road, some twisties and open sweeping corners, good road surface )

Then Pick up A357 towards Blandford, Looks like a good pub in a village called Fiddleford, had a tarmac carpark and seating outside and was open all day for food, This is reached after about 60 miles so is probably a good time for a lunch stop.

Again mixture of twisties and wide sweeping bends, good fun and surface, theres a weird optical illusion / blind summit just before Durweston you'll think your going into Orbit but you wont.

After Durweston at the traffic lights for the bridge over the River Stour, take a left Follow A350 towards Stourpaine, then stay on that road all the way to Shaftesbury, its nice this bit, good surface and some really tight hairpin corners seperated by longish straights, a chance to test your braking and cornering skills very enjoyable.

At Shaftesbury, follow the A30 towards Sailsbury for a couple of hundred metres and then take the B3081, this will take you up the Infamous "Zig Zag Hill" its not as steep as Porlock, but it has more bends and they are tighter, on the GSXR this is a 1st gear clutch slip set of bends right on maximum steering lock. Good fun.

Then out across Cranborne Chase towards Sixpenny Handly, then take the A354 towards Sailsbury.

I peeled off before Sailsbury following Signs fo Sailsbury race course, then once I had passed that, I continued on towards Wilton. ( This was good as it means we dont have to navigate our way through Sailsbury on a Saturday afternoon, trust me you dont want to do this )

At the traffic lights in Wilton take a left ( you have to ) and the follow the A30 back towards Shaftesbury again, then at Shaftesbury ( about 120 miles covered by this point, theres a Tescos in Shaftesbury that would make a good fuel stop at this point ) Then take the A30 towards Sherborne.

This is 40 odd miles of sharp bends, agian with Long sweepers and straights I really opened the bike up along here. Good fun.

Then at Sherborne take the B3148 towards Marston Magna.

At Marston Magna, by the pub called "The Marston Inn", take a right, onto the A359 towards Queen Camel / Sparkford.

Follow this all the way through Queen Camel, then you'll pop out on the Sparkford Roundabout on the A303, where the ride will terminate. Theres fuel and food here for those of you going straight home, for those of you that are coming back to Vipers for a bite to eat then thats just a short trip up the A303 to Wincanton.

No, No Tiverton Little Chef, but IMHO I dont see why we couldnt fit a run around that area and this other route to. But I dont know how feasable that is for everybody else with free weekends etc etc.

If you can run in at legal speeds (i.e. 70 on a dual carriageway) you'll be fine. It's not a race so you should not be slowing down the group.

I appreciate what your saying but not everyone has the same take on a rideout.I know its not a race but I wouldn't want to feel peoples enjoyment of the day was spoiled because I'm riding slowly and they have to wait for me to catch up.Those that know me on here know I dont do slow as a rule even with Adam as pillion.Although with a recent incident in mind I am now inclined to be a shade slower and more observant slightly spoiling the enjoyment of the bike.

Presuming that there are more than 5 going, we will use the 2nd man drop off system. The only person that your tardiness can effect is Tail End Charlie. TEC will be expecting this and won't mind at all. TEC and point take shifts so will get their chance to "go for it" if they wish. Riders that want to 'shift', often move to the no 2 position so that they can drop off, wait till last place (excl TEC) then work their way back through to the no 2 spot and repeat. Anyone who finds this too tiresome can leave the group and arrange to meet up someplace, all we ask of them is to let Leader, Point or TEC know their plan so that we don't send out a sweeper to find them. There is nothing worse than spending an hour or so searching ditches for the inconsiderate person who's safely gone home.

YOU ARE WELCOME!

Point taken. I see the route map is on Autoroute has anyone got the route directions as an .xls file or word? or even an autoroute file.I have autoroute 2002 so some of the latest versions aren't backwards compatable.

fizzwheel
02-07-07, 07:28 PM
Theres a few places to stay...

Theres a travel lodge at Podmore, but not much fun, but cheap.

A bit closer to Yeovil, in a little Village called Mudford and theres a pub there that I think do rooms, Its called "The Half Moon"

If peeps are wanting to come into Yeovil afterwards ( it is the closest place ot the start finish point ) then thats easy, best place to stay is in a pub called "The Alex"

Or failing that theres another pub called "Globetrotters" a bit further up the road.

If theres a few peeps up for this I can take you round the sites of Yeovil in the evening if you like.

caz650s

err whats this second rider thing???

fizzwheel
04-07-07, 09:17 PM
OK Taylors it is, might be a bit late, you know what the traffic is like in Crewkerne...

Second man drop off works like this. I'll be in front, and when we get to a junction, the person behind me stops and marks the junction so that the other riders know which direction to go in, they'll sit there till the last person ( Tail End Charlie or TEC ) goes past them and then they'll over take the TEC and take up their place in the queue of riders again.

Saves everybody riding like a moron or racing so they dont get left behind, that way you can ride how you like and not have to worry about being pressured into keeping up.

I think the AR08 will be more of a Somerset Spectacular:cool:

:D

It is one of the routes I was thinking of suggesting it takes in a few local landmarks and also the Zig Zag. The only thing that concerns me is taking 60 odd bikes up the Zig Zag especially with some newbie riders. Last time I went up that the surface was b*ll*x on it.

Might be fun though !!

Podmore is just outside Yeovil, its a services at the roundabout where the A303 and A37 meet up.

My girlfriend's parents live in Portsmouth, I normally leave 1 1/2 hrs to the journey back to Yeovil on the bike, it can take a while but depends which way you come.

Reccie done and dusted ( for one of us literally !!! )

Going to change the last section slightly to avoid some of the back roads...

Otherwise route seemed to work well I thought.

Finally got my thumb fixed, well of a fashion back in December. Managed to get enough strength in it to ride about this distance at long last :D . Been watching this thread with much interest as it sounded ideal. Penny has just dropped as to why the 15th September sounded familiar, I will be on my way back from Barcelona that day. Yeah should be a great holiday but I'm gutted I'll miss out yet again :(

To be honest, as much as we'd like to be there, i think that with moving etc, and the fact that im now not off the week before, and as always the lack of cash, i doubt if we'll be there!

Normally I'd agree Viper but I've had a pretty rough time recently and need a damn good holiday. I will be watching for future ride outs and hope to meet more of you soon.
