UPDATED FRI 15 JUN - DETAILED DISTANCES & FUEL STOP
Edit - have changed first few miles to take us past a petrol station in Lichfield where we will all stop while those who need it fill up for the start of the ride. If another fill required (shouldn't be required for most) there's a petrol station in Matlock - when we stop at Matlock Bath continue on into Matlock and turn right at the roundabout near the railway station - petrol station is down there on the left.
I went over the first part of the course (Basset's Pole - Ashbourne) yesterday evening. Distances should be fairly accurate. From there on they are estimates from multimap. Total distance about 120 miles - should be OK on one full tank. If I have time will also post maps.
Cheers Keith (My mobile - 07733 002350)
10AM - Meet at Basset's Pole pub car park.
0m 10:30 AM - depart Basset’s Pole onto A38 North towards Lichfield
5m At Roundabout take 2nd exit A5206 towards Lichfield.
6m *** Fuel up - Petrol Station on right close to end of this road.
Continue onto A51Upper St John St owards Lichfield Centre
6.5 m Go through crossroads and turn left on A51 the Friary
After a few hundred yards turn right at roundabout, continuing on A51
9.m At roundabout turn onto A515 towards Ashbourne
(11m – road being resurfaced – loose chippings)
(20m – approaching Draycott in the clay – loads of speed cameras!!)
24m At roundabout join A50 towards Uttoxeter / Stoke
25m Leave and rejoin A515, go under A50 and head for Ashbourne
(30m – road repairs – temporary surface)
34m At Ashbourne continue on – road turns into A517 for Belper
45m At Belper mill turn left onto A6 North for Matlock
(Popular fast bike road – Police patrol it a lot)
54m Arrive Matlock Bath and park on left amongst bikes where you can (it gets very busy)
Fish & Chips, leave at 13:00
0m Leave Matlock on A6 North for Buxton and on to Cat & Fiddle
10m Bakewell – continue on A6 North for Buxton
21m Buxton – at 1st roundabout turn left onto Dale Road and continue through lights onto West road and Macclesfield road
22m At Juntion with A53 turn left towards leek / Macclesfield
22.5m Turn Right onto A54 Macclesfield, which turns into A537
Cat & Fiddle road is a great ride but needs respect – my son watched his friend kill himself on this road.
Because of this Police are usually out in force for speeders
30m Arrive Cat and Fiddle Inn
Brew / Soft Drink, leave about 14:30
0m Depart Cat & Fiddle for Macclesfield – Leek – Ashbourne
7m At Junction with A523 turn left towards Leek
(Leek is speed camera city)
21m Half mile after lights / crossroads in Leek turn right onto Springfield Road towards Ashbourne
Then turn left back onto A523 South towards Ashbourne
*** 27m - watch out for Waterhouses - 30 limit with several cameras
30m Continue, road turns into A52
36m Arrive Ashbourne. Continue along main street to Buxton Road (A515)
Turn left after 50 yds and pull onto Market square
End of Ride about 15:30
Cheers Keith
No idea, but I'm game.

Route plan to Matlock Bath looks fine=D>
Not too familiar with the roads up around there, but would it not be better to go from MB to C&F via the A515. Stay off the A6 where possible. Possibly use the A5012 or the B5055.
Just a suggestion, and not even sure we can make it yet anyway.
 I'll second the use of the B5055 onto the A515 nice road that

OK by me. A515 is straight and fast at Buxton end. A6 more twisty (and prettier IMO) but will be busier / slower.
Any other opinions?
I'm up for anything. Although i feel we need a definative Thread as theres a few of them now.
A list of definate people would also be good, so we dont turn up wondering wether we should be waiting for one or two more people etc?
Well I'm a definite :D Got my route sorted. Esentially, sit on the A5 until the A38, where I swing right & follow my nose until I fall over you lot at Bassetts Pole. The A5 has it's uses!
Just the timing to sort out now.
1) Baph - Defo
2) Graeme - Defo
3) ????

unless something totally unexpected happens I'm going to be there.

Hey,
Not sure if I can make it but if you arent worried about distance there could be an addition from Matlock:
follow the A6 through Bakewell and at Ashford in the Water take the A619 to Baslow
Continue to Calver and up through Froggat (Brilliant Rd!)
Drop down through Hathersage and Hope then Castleton, up Winnats Pass then to Chapel en le Frith.
If from Chapel you go to Whaley Bridge and then up the A5004 Long hill to Buxton you can ride that then on to the Cat!
Its quite a bit longer but a nice little addition!

Just retrace the route out. A515 south down to A50, south 1 mile, then right at roundabout towards Lichfield, get to A5 and back to West Mids.

Them's great roads furry but I fear we're pushing it for one ride. Maybe a separate ride up there. Whaley Bridge to Buxton is one of my favourite roads. Less well known than C&F but loads of fun.

Furrybean mentioned the magic word. Bakewell :D Count me in on that, fond memories of Bakewell. :)
This weekend, I shall be mostly getting saddle sore :D 170miles (ish) to even get to the meet :D

A6 Matlock to Buxton (as originally proposed) goes through Bakewell, but some others want to go on the A515. No problem if we split into two groups and meet at Buxton I guess. I'd favour going straight up the A6 as it's twistier, but it carries a lot more traffic.

I can hang about post rideout & drop by Bakewell, I'll be in the area, and I aint fussy about times/routes etc.
I've never ridden in that part of the country before so I have no idea (and so I suppose no preference) of what route we take, I'm easy whatever, but I am dead excited about this rideout. The flippin weather had better stay good.

Well, I for one, would prefer to stay as one group, unless there is a huge turnout, so I'll go the original route Well Oiled. It'll be fun either way I'm sure. :p

+1. Especially if there is a huge turnout. The noise. Oh my god the noise! :D Lets all stay as one group folks, please.
If we're not passing through Bakewell, I'll double back after the ride, no problem.
Carlos, bring waterproof gear. I will be doing. I'm going to stick my neck out & say that I hope it does rain. I'll get to test these PR2s in the wet then.
I hope there isnt any rain, if its ****ing it down giving a good and proper soaking, i would question wether or not to go out iam afraid.
Not that I'am a fair weather rider but I dont have much experience in the wet and from what I have had I cant see myself enjoying a wet rideout.
Not that I'am a fair weather rider but I dont have much experience in the wet and from what I have had I cant see myself enjoying a wet rideout.
The only way to gain experience is to go out & ride in it unfortunately. The key elements are to keep as dry as possible (your gear will keep you warm so long as it doesn't get soaked through) and to ride appropriate for the conditions.
There's more grip in the wet than you think, but I wouldn't expect to tear arounda corner at 90mph, being cranked over just to find a manhole cover. That's asking to spit your teeth out.
It'd be a shame not to meet folks, but at the end of the day, everyone has to do whatever they're comfortable with.
The weather forecast does show rain/showers for the midlands on saturday though.
We'll see how it goes  The wind up there is bad enough let alone when its raining aswell.

RAIN:smt022
I have to say I'd probably also have to give some serious consideration if its raining tropical monsoon proportions but its ok if its only showers. Its not the getting wet that bothers me at all, its the fact that the rear end tries to over take the front end at the best of times but when its really wet (by which I mean standing water everywhere wet) its just flippin scary. But as Baph says aswell the weather forecast I saw for saturday was only showers so fingers crossed.

Look at the start of the thread for updated info with more detailed route and distances. Will post maps if I have some time.
Weather forecast for Sat now says dry, partly cloudy (according to BBC) :D
Nice one Keith, cheers. Route, mileage and times sound perfect for me and if the weather does turn out to be dry then all the better.
Probably have to find a fuel stop at lunch stop in Matlock as the poxy tank range on the TL will be lucky to make the whole route in one go, anyone know if theres one nearby?

Hmmm. Stewie wanted a ride around North Wales, so I stepped up & planned things because I was local. Then it transpired that Stewie couldn't make it.
Now you lyelj plan a rideout local to you, and can't make it. Are you really Stewie (or vice versa??) :p

Shell station in Lichfield, but you'll have to go another way in, I believe.
Just to make all aware, both my rear indicator bulbs blew on the way to work this morning :( I'll do my best to source some bulbs & get them in the bike before morning. Don't fancy not being able to tell people behind me what I'm doing.
Before anyone asks, the problem is water getting into the indicator casing on the Motrax Diamonds I have fitted. A good clean out with WD40, dry, silicon grease & new bulbs should see me sorted.
EDIT: Can someone who will definately be at the Bassetts Pole meet PM me their number please, if I'm going to be late I'll get in touch so that you know not to hang about for me, and I'll try my best to follow the route & play catchup. (Tomcat, I said definately at Bassetts Pole :p)

Baph - Hope you can make it in time. If not a quick (but boring) way of catching up is just to blast up the A38 to the A6 and go North to Matlock.
Cheers Keith
Muchos grassas for the number & route.
I'll drop you a text either way tonight. If I don't get it done tonight it'll be a matter of either waiting for the shops to open (which means I wont get down to Matlock until around 2pm :( ) or take my chances, ride & fix enroute. That depends on the weather really. Wasn't much fun in the rain & spray with no rear indicators this morning.
I can source everything tonight except maybe the bulbs themselves. I'm sure there'll be somewhere around the Shrewsbury area I can pickup the bulbs.

I have a bike shop at the end of the road that does indy bulbs for mini's.
Have yours got a number on them or anything. The bulbs cost either a quid or 2 quid dependent on type. I could bring em along tomorrow.
Anyway what's wrong wwith good old fashioned hand signals. Lol.

These (http://www.toolparts.co.uk/acatalog/Indicator_Units.html) are the wee beggars I need. If you find some Pete, pick them up anyway please & I'll square costs up with you tomorrow.
I'll sort the leak out & if I get a bulb, well, I'll have a spare set.
EDIT: On the site, scroll down half way. I have the Motrax Diamond Mini indicators, the clear/amber bulbs for them are £1 on that site. 12v 23W jobbies. Anything with that fitment at 12v will do as a bodge job though. Better to have some light & a fast flash than no light at all.
On another note, from looking out my office window......the weather is looking damn good.....forecast says otherwise but hey ho
All things being equal, I shall be leaving the house at 6am in the morning. Wohoo! :(
Arrive in time for the 10am meet, finish the ride probably around 3pm, if I head straight back, that puts me home for about 7pm.

Nah, Pete & Lissa will probably come up trumps with the bulbs. So subject to the weather, if I can't get bulbs tonight I'll set off regardless in the morning, and just run the risk of no indicators on the back end. Go fast enough, and traffic behind you doesn't need to know what you're doing anyway!
I'll do my best to get hold of some bulbs, but if it doesn't happen, then I'll see what the weathers like. I'm currently sitting here thinking which of the kids toys I can shred to get bulbs... ;)
The route I've got planned (A5 until I trip up over the A38 then south to Bassetts Pole) should take (according to AA Route Planner) 3h 30. Meeting time is 10am, and I'm planning on setting off 6am. 30mins to spare for fuel stops etc, and no doubt I'll be up before that anyway, Harry will make sure of that one. Last time I went on a ride anywhere I was late because he refused to let me out of the house until I'd explained the water cycle to him (he's 2 for frigs sake!!).

Hey Baph, bulbs purchased. Can you remember if the pins in your bulbs are opposite each other, or in a 'v'? We've got the ones with the pins opposite, as they were a quid.:D
Lissa, you just sparked a brainwave!!! Problem solved.
I bought a full set of 4 Motrax Diamond's just never got around to fitting them on the front!! They've still got bulbs in!!
Just got to waterproof the indicators now.
About the question, haven't got the foggiest. I just remembered that one pair weren't wired up right, so I had to strip them down & solder it together properly (that's the only time I've had the bulbs out).
I'll still happily take a set of spares though ;)
Cool.................problem solved one way or the other then:D
Saturday:
Largely dry initially, but scattered, locally heavy showers will develop again by afternoon, perhaps with some thunder. There should be a few sunny spells too though. Light winds. Maximum temperature 19 °C.

Job jobbed, and even if I do say so myself, better than Motrax did in the first place :D
The bulbs had completely blown (as in, blown a hole in the glass!!). WD40 followed by switch cleaner (handy stuff that) to clean it out. Allow 5mins to air dry, then bulbs in & test. Silicon potting compound (clear non conductive paste) on the inside, silicon grease (with part PVA mix) on the outside.
The bulbs weren't quite right, so I now flash a little fast, but it's JUST legal so no worries there. Hopefully it'll slow down once the potting compound sets & the switch cleaner has done it's job properly.
Sid Squid doesn't know it, but I used the opportunity to pick his brains a little & sort my clutch out ready for tomorrow. Just fuel to get.

Guess I'll wake up in the am, stick my head out the window and then decide...
But I really want to come- was looking forward to it- just see what mother nature says
If I'm not at BP at 10- have fun and ride safe.

Back after a small diversion into M&S Derby to pick something up for my missus - a strapless bra she ordered last week!
Imagine me in the biking gear going up to M&S customer services and saying "Do you have a strapless bra that was ordered last Tuesday?"
Thanks all for a grand (and mostly dry) ride out.
Time to relax. Beer o'clock methinks.
:)
Next time theres a midlands ride out let me know.
