I love both, just wish I could spend a bit of money on both. The ST is currently running about 270bhp (via Dream Science remap) I've an exhaust on order too.
I have to confess that I get just as much fun from the car as I do from the bike, and the car is very comfortable. Bit juicy thou...
.
I don't know WHY they don't bring the ST to the states! All we have are little sporty cars that make some power OR huge American monster machines that make gobs. I would like to see some more cars like the ST, MAZDASPEED 3, or Civic Si. Well, I suppose we do have two of them. Also it took us too long to get the Hornet 600 out here too (AKA the Honda 599).
Don't know why GM won't give you the Astra VXR, and the Monaro and the new VX8 either. Latter 2 come from Holden in Aus, and the Astra is European. 237bhp isn't the greatest power, but its soooo much fun and easily upgradeable.
ST is more refined and smooth, its a very good car, but for me personnally, it didn't have the "weeeeeee" factor of the VXR. They've got a good engine though, just as upgradable as the VXR, but as its got 500cc more its got more scope for big power tuning.
The Astra VXR is a pile of poo. It would be better if it went in a straight line!

You say that, but have you pushed one? It handles pretty well out the box which is suprising for a standard vauxhall. Not as good as some of the other marques of hot hatch, but it isn't bad at all.
This was a slow lap, but from the esses all the way round to the chicane, I was usually at full throttle all the way. Braking from 125mph at the 100m marker coming into the esses.. It handles ok ;) This is on the 19"s too, 18"s handle better.

I tried the VXR, CTR and Golf GTi as well as the ST. Golf was boring. Honestly it really was... Too quiet, to plain, too "average". I hated the Civic, and that surprised me, but for the money their was just no refinement what so ever, you had to rev it like a sports bike and it didn't look like it was worth the premium cost that Honda ask.
The VXR... Maybe it was because I was looking for something different and I already had a Vauxhall (Vectra SRi). It just didn't do it for me. The doors don't "clunk" like it was solid, there are other Astras that look very similar, even have the same wheels, so it wasn't that "different".
I now have more power than a standard VXR and I still don't feel any torquesteer, even though I did with the Astra. Horses for courses I guess.
I know a guy whose ST has 330 brake and over 400ft/lbs :smt103. It still seems to drive well, so I think it must be the way they're set up.
Torque steer is down to the aggressive map Vx put on it as standard. 1st is whey to harsh, but the remaps sort that all out.
Everyone says aobut the torque steer, but i really don't find it any problem. You should try driving the other cars we've got
Regarding the looks, think its down to personnal taste, but i know we both thought the ST looked like a standard car, the astra doesn't look like any other models though.
Those volvo engines have been about for a while and the sweedes are getting 600+ from them (but requires a larger turbo which takes longer to spool). TBH, thats the only bummer in the astra, it takes a second or two to come on boost, which can be annoying.
Engine in the vxr comes with goodies like under piston spray bars, better injectors (although max'd out around 300bhp), so its got a good basis over the lower 2.0 turbo models.
But if we all liked the same thing, we'd get pretty bored pretty quick.
