A topic from work today.

Does your car reflect your love for biking or is it a shed on 4 wheels just doing it's job as a load-lugger? Are they evenly matched for performance, (relative) comfort and desireability etc.
And the biggie - which is your favourite!
Maybe your bike is the hack, and the car is luxury in comparison???

The SV v's the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4

I'm loving both of them, but the bike always leaves me with a grin and I'll never sell it. The car will have to go someday, I just lack the willpower to give it up! It's a damn fine car that I lusted after for years before getting the chance to buy one. Just a shame i feel so bad ragging the car only to see 20mpg, which will be the main reason for selling it - U/L fuel has been over a quid here for so long now. And it should really be running Super or Optimax all the time, at £1.10p/litre. Between that and services every 4,500miles....Ouch!

Anyhow..... you can't get performance for free! Performance is surprisingly well matched up to the legal limit. Beyond that the car is pi****g all over the SV, up to ahem....160mph (cough). Which i would expect, no demand!, from something costing 8x the price of a new SV. I could just as easily go 200miles a day in either and enjoy it, even in the rain on the bike i'm not that fussed.

This all came about because another guy at work has a Speed Triple 900 (original version), and a Suzuki Alto - i think the engine in it is a 900cc too.
The bike has twice the power but they weigh about the same (ok i joke, but it's close!). To top it all, the car was £5k new, much less than the bike. What is mad is that he goes no faster on either, "60 is fine" he says. Wierdo! lol.

So what have you all got?

Hmm, got a currently dead 1991 MX5 which probably does mirror (relatively) the SV - both are hardly high performance but sporty enough in their class, and both are huge fun.
The working car is an Audi A4 V6 2.5tdi - reasoning for that was pure sensibility, diesel + german = uneventful motoring. My reason for getting the V6 lump rather than the 1.9 tdi was just an attempt to add a modicum of entertainment to commutes and work trips.

Favourite, in the right mood the MX5 really is a hoot, but on balance the bike would have to win. The Audi is purely for workhorse and comfort.

My car is a '98 1.3 Toyota Corolla Sportif (sort of small estate car with a hatchback) with 120K on the clock. It is used solely to move things round which are too big to carry on the bike, in really heavy ice, or when carrying more than 1 passenger is neccessary. I've only put 1500 miles on it in almost a year and that included a 500 mile round trip to London. Why I chose it? Big boot, comfy, cheap to run and insure, massively reliable (Corollas make Golfs look like Ducatis IMO). No, it's not pretty, fun or good for when you're in a rush, but a bike ticks all those boxes.

I'd really like something like an ST-3, Impreza or (dreams) Evo FQ-400, but I know that:
a) I wouldn't use them enough to justify it.
b) Couldn't afford one without it crippling me financially.
c) I prefer bikes (even "slow" ones like SVs) to fast cars and any 'toy vehicle' funds would go on a nice weekend bike before they went on a decent car.

I drive a 1l yaris and ride a z1000. Seems that the yaris has about half the bhp of the zed.

Teehee, apparently the 0-60 of my yaris is 13.6 seconds. It has been a great little car though and never let me down (yet).

I have a Pug 106 rallye S2 which is pokey enough to keep me entertained, and I don't think many riders could live with it in the twisties. Relatively cheap to run, although I think I'll spend a few quid ironing out the kinks this summer.

I love my SV. I want to push my Polo off the nearest cliff, not really, but quite annoyed with it and a minor engine fault at the moment.

Very nice. I really like 106s and wouldn't mind having one as a small rally car to thrash round the Brecon Beacons back road.

Falc: I've driven a few Vectra and Astra SRIs, very good fun. I managed to get the vectra sideways for 360 round a mini roundabout. :)

The only time I use the car is when we have to much shopping to carry on the bike.

Let me think

1998 1.3 Ford Fiesta, versus K5 GSXR 750... no contest really.

I miss my previous car though, I had a tidy 1995 MKIII VW Golf GTI 16v which I was very attatched to.

My rainy day commuter/work horse is a red 1988 Chevy Camaro with a small block V8 5.0L and my other toy is a 1999 freshly black paint sv650. The bike is much more fun, but both get the same looks from the ladies, especially when the t-tops are off the redneck mobile!http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/2/web/2210000-2210999/2210546_5_full.jpg

I have two cars and the SV,

Main car is a 52 plate 307HDi 2.0l , it is the main family car and the one the wife uses for work.
I have the enviable position of having a 1994 rover 214 GSi , it is my hack for going to and from work. It does get used for longer runs as well, this weekend it took me up to the lake’s for a camping trip. Did not use the bike as had too much to take due to it being a hardcore hiking/camping in the wild trip.

The bike is a 53 pointy s, that never fails to put a smile on my face. So its no contest as to which one I prefer.
THE SV!!!

I get so frustrated in the car now since I have had my bike licence, wanting to get past things but cant as I don’t have either the power or the room!

Unfortunately I don’t think that you can live happily on just a bike, sometimes you need the practicality and space the car gives you, even if it is a shed.

I have a Range Rover HSE and an SV - so the comfort comparison is a bit of a no-brainer. A trip to Portsmouth & back doesn't leave you with a numb bum in the car, can't really say the same for the bike.

However for day to day transport to work it's nearly always the SV unless I'm visiting customers... similarly if I can get away from the wife & kids at the weekend then again it's the SV. Beginning to wonder why I keep the car now, it's only done about 2000 miles since Xmas and the wife refuses to drive it instead of her Scenic.

Must admit everytime I've used the car the last few weeks I've been thinking will this fit between those two lines of cars & can I get it to filter. The bikes SO much more FUN.

Anyone want to buy a Range Rover? lol.

Well my Vectra SRI 150 puts out 150 bhp and 320Nm of torque (Like the imperial/SI mix?) what the feck is 110kW.

The gsxr 600 is only 115 BHP (83 of those kW things) and only 69 Nm of torque

Difference is I bought the Gixxer, the Vectra belongs the company. would I buy the Vectra. NFC.

I have the SV at 70ish BHP, the Ducati Monster at 82ish BHP and a diesel focus at 90BHP. The car gets me and the wife about and the bike gets me and me only about much quicker than the car. To me there's no point having a quick car if you've got a bike to have the fun on.

Car is quicker than the bike over 80, as it has 280hp, 4 times the power, 4 times the number of driven wheels, cost 1.8 times as much to buy, uses twice as much fuel, costs 4 times more to insure, and only makes me smile about half as much (which is still a lot).

Keep thinking about getting more off a shed, but putting down the power in the damp is truly amazing. And I like to be able to overtake in the car as if I was on the bike :)

Cars:

ONCE I'M OUT OF COLLEGE (ONLY ONE YEAR AWAY!):
2001 Suzuki SV650
2001-2003 Subaru Impreza WRX (STi if I am lucky)
2007 Honda Fit

Why shouldn't I complain? Only four years ago, gas used to cost us less than 1/2 of what it does now. You all still have it far worse than us, but most American's have to own a car just to get around (I think 60 miles is the average daily commute). I personally drive over 400 miles ever week. If I want to go visit my best friend in DC? It's 600 miles. It makes me laugh my ass off when someone from another country says, "Why don't you walk?" HA! Have you seen how our public transportation is set up?! Only our most cramped cities have decent public transit in the U.S.

I'm just angry that we got involved in some stupid war that isn't doing anything positive. I would have at least thought gas prices would go down... it's Iraq for Christ's sake- there is oil, I know it. I would ALMOST support the war if it made gas prices go down. I feel awful for Europe though, prices like that make me sick.

All true - but if you think public transport in the states is bad, try ours.

For the price of a return ticket first class from London to Manchester (about 250 miles) on the train, I could buy a flight from London to Rio de Janeiro!

If you live outside any of the major cities of the UK - public transport is a waste of time.

I commute 30 miles each way to work each day, which takes me over an hour on a good day in the car... If I wanted to use public transport, to be at work by 08:00 I'd have to leave my house at 05:30, magically transport myself 10 miles to the only place I can get transport from in order to reach the connections I need to make it to work in order to be there by 06:15, and then spend an hour and a half on buses, metro and bus again.

I hate Britain sometimes.

I'm a little different.

I have two very different vehicles, SV650 (for fast fun) and a Land Rover 110 (for slow fun and practicality).

I love driving/riding both of them, but for different reasons.

I can get on the bike and go practically anywhere and come back with a huge grin on my face:mrgreen: , but I can get in the Land Rover and go absolutely anywhere (on dry land anyway) and still come back with a big grin.

The bike gets used as often as possible. I go to work on it when the weather's good (and usually take the long way home).

The Land Rover gets used the rest of the time - going to work in bad weather and when I can't be bothered getting all my bike gear on. It also gets used off-road quite often (less so now I have the bike though) and it's great for going camping; there's room for 2 people to sleep in the back comfortably (it's better than a tent).

The Land Rover cost me over 4 times what the bike cost, but this year (1st year on a bike - no NCB and 4th year driving - 3 years NCB) they are both costing me roughly the same to insure.

My SV650
http://snap35.photobox.co.uk/266151033641dd8f97d56d38ffea594fa9f085f55c9008e27c a9190b.jpg

I drive the Land Rover hard on the road (it takes some doing to get one into 4 wheel drifts in the dry).

I do find that when driving (after having got my bike), I drive as a frustrated biker - getting very impatient when in traffic, etc.

You'd be suprised. Most of the people into the old skool cars will be enthusiasts now, and most of them are kept more standard looking and the engines tuned.

hmm, looks like the SVs need to be replaced by Triumphs to keep the garage british.

Both the bikes and cars have plenty of extras, nothing stupid or chavvy though.

Incidently I have just changed my mountain bike to a Orange which is also british built so it will happen. (Street triple, with a DL650 as touring backup could be a good compromise)

I have a Pug 106 rallye S2 which is pokey enough to keep me entertained, and I don't think many riders could live with it in the twisties. Relatively cheap to run, although I think I'll spend a few quid ironing out the kinks this summer.

I used to have one of these in my 'yoof' until I wrote it off due to its viscious 'lift off oversteer'
As well as the 'family' TDi, also have a Suzuki Ignis Sport. Similar vein to the Rallye. Used for a lot of clubman rallies. Good fun, if a tad 'raw' ;) 110hp in 940 kg's.

And the main reason for the cut out is the 1988 spec rst's front bumper will not allow the front mount intercooler, plus it lets alot of air through as you have to remember that the intercooler is really close to the radiator which is behind it and wont allow enough air through, i can get a 90 spec bumper which will bring it back to normal.

Whilst still living with my parents I wasn't allowed to buy a bike on fear of being thrown out. My dad is a big bloke and a champion arm wrestler. I'm still half his size. Sooo I bought cars. Did well to be honest. Started off buying cheap wrecks, turned them into something better, used them till a new owner was found and moved on to a better one. Ended up with an Audi Quatro at one point but that one I sold far too quickly. So quick in fact that almost non of my friends ever knew I had one. But for the few days it was mine I had a real kick driving it. So responsive and powerful and it made me feel like a great rally driver.
When I finally bought my SV650 as a first bike I saw what an experience a bike is. Driving cars is so relatively easy. Such a challenge I found to ride a bike well that I'm still learning. OK, to drive a car to a certain level is hard too, but you just don't get the same connection and feel. Thinkering with bikes is more pleasurable too. I've had an Alfa engine fitted to an Escort and moded a mini so much that I almost left nothing of the original but with bikes you don't need assistance so you can do things on your own without disturbance from the helper. Sort of spiritual. When doing maintenance to a bike I go back to the days when I was so happy cleaning or fixing a puncture of my Raleigh Chopper. Had one of those?

Not fancy playing with the skylin to give it an infinate amount more power than the BMW?

IC/Exhaust, Filter/Remap combo should see well over 400 gee gees and a standard 1/4 mile about the same as the SV (low-mid 12's). It'll carry on and on and on as well... But the fuel bills are a bit much lol.

ah the Skyline was quick but waaay too loud and lairy for everyday use. It was the R33 with just rear wheel drive..no traction control nothing!. 315bhp genuine at the hubs...BUT...

The street sleeper BMW has more torque than a 2006 Aston Martin!!..324ft/lb at 3800rpm and a higher potential top speed in its current trim than the Skyline!. Its awesome with the traction control on..it kicks out and then corrects itself making it quick out of turns where the Skyline..you were holding back until you could hit the power hard. Without the traction on the bloody thing is hilarious!!!

Next step up is the M5 which is basically the same car but with a different system and a few engine tweaks. I think this still holds the record round the Ring which is a hunting ground of the Skyline...

Plus it has a TV for when you get board sitting in traffic - not that your supposed to actually watch it!!!

Daimo
20-06-07, 02:27 PM
RWD, you had the GTS, a 2.5 single turbo? 315 sounds like a moderatly modified GTR though (spec i've mentioned would be close to get 315 at the wheels).

Don't think its a BMW holding the ring record anymore. Can't remember the last skyline to take it as theres too many computers on board. Last "street" modified car i'd heard was a 600bhp silver Toyota Supra at 7.49, but that time went ages ago.

Actually, i think its the Radical that holds the record now.

M5 V8 model?

The 8 series BMWs are a machine though. Limiter off and few simple things and its a 200mph car. Happy to sit at 160 all day as well. But a totally different car to a skyline. Lazy progressive smooth power compared to a raw biting skyline power.

My Skyline GTS25t had a Trust 3" downpipe, decat and catback exhaust, A'pexi air filter and a Greddy boost controller at 0.85 bar and made 280bhp at the flywheel.... (all dyno figures though, so who knows how accurate they are!)

The R33 GTST we had was well modded. Full system..bigger turbo..turbo elbow..front mount intercooler..remote filter..induction kit..GTR fuel pump..Cusco triple plate clutch..quite a few bits barring internal work. It also had a full Cusco LSD which made it fun! Was dyno'd on Abbey Motorsports dyno..they also looked after it while we had it. Was a good car but got offered good money for it and time came for it to go.

The one I saw was from last year...rocket ronnie doing the quater mile and top-end run in the skyline in one go at the end.
There were some seriously quick STi's as well and some bloke in a scooby doing the slalom course I think, binning the scooby up against an embankment...

Ohhhhhhh thats the year i went (pics above) thinki it was 2004 that one.

Scooby bloke blamed a "sticking throttle." We were watching him, there was no throttle stick, the guy was trying to show off at the end of the run.

Still, big respect to him, they taped it all up, then chucked the car on for a top speed run

I think Ronnie hit 196mph that day. There was a Gold Supra though that done 201.5mph in 1.25 miles. Not too shabby.

This year though its a differnet ball game. The level has dramatically gone up. Unless your FWD car car do a >12 second 1/4 mile, you wouldn't qualify. I think the 4WD guys had to be in the 10's to qualify.

Martin Hadlands escort is running again, that will do over 200mph now, plus theres an event called "track attack" and a lot of quick cars are being built for that.

Its a good day out tbh. Just full of neds and boyracers :(

Rest of the pics from that day (missis had her car on show).

It's had the majority of the APS catalogue thrown at it. Front mounted IC, In Wing Induction Kit, SR 40 Turbo Full 3.5" Straight through Blitz Exhaust.
Fuel Pump, Regulator Plugs etc etc, Looking out for a dedicated stand alone ECU now. Hopefully Autronics or Gems. Would like the full throttle gear change and Anti Lag. Not to mention launch control and traction control. Next is suspension and brakes

She's roughly around the 350 BHP 330 Ft lb at the moment. I'm hoping for a drivable 400 - 450 BHP / 350 - 400 Ft lb

This one is my on the road one. I have a dedicated track toy that I'm building out of an STI version 2.

I had a few close calls in the RA and don't want to trash it.

What not to do with it on your first week of owning it.

Yep pretty much, I used to own a 01 WRX the diffs are somewhat different on the RA. That and it was a dirty line.

In the WRX I would have gotten away with what I did wrong (lifting off the throttle). The STI provokes lift off oversteer when this is done. I should of held the wheel where it was and planted the throttle.

Strange how your brain tells you not too when facing a barrier at over 100MPH :D

Renault Laguna Dynamique Vs SV650S

Both have two things in common - they both have an engine and they both have a sequencial gear box. I enjoy driving the Renault, don't get me wrong as it sticks to the road and can take any corner at any speed with VERY little body roll but it's nowhere near as fun as the SV and isn't half as quick to accelerate (and the SV's restricted!).

Its a high revving 7.5k rpm NA 2.0 16v so you have to have it over 5krpm to really get it going, and the lack of low down torque is annoying after the bike... However get it up on its 'tiptoes' and the chassis is awesome. So much grip and turn the tc/esp off and you can get the back end to play quite nicely. When you're really going for it though its pretty noisey and sounds like it's going to explode. Great fun if you can put any thoughts of mechanical sympathy aside and wring it's neck!!

Car - 51 Plate Lotus Elise - modified for the track putting out about 165 brake, different kind of thrill to the bike.

V

K1 S mostly standard apart from the exhaust, screen and seat coverings.

I don't prefer either over the other as each does a different thing differently - what cop out! I'll take the bike for the daily commute unless it's hoofing it down with rain. The car is frustrating - tons of ability but too much other traffic getting in the way. The Bike's less frustratring because you can dispatch traffic so much easier than in the car.
