on the way back from bradford to cardiff, on the M6 i get a flat tyre, its flater than posh spices chest, so i come off at warsall find a petrol station & try to pump it up. but it was not working(one of them new type in the presure 50p a go jobs), so i limp around on a flat tyre looking for a bike shop ½ hour later i find one but its shut

so i go to another petrol station, this time it works, so i put 40psi in (its the old fashion dail on the hand bit FREE) & plan to get home asap stopping every so often to pump it up, but i get all the way home & its showing 34psi, which its showing now3 days later.

so what could have caused this?

Bit of a mystery there H, I've heard this theory before...

Centrafugal (sp?) force tends to open the valve a little bit, if it then gets grit in it, it could deflate, you pushing air thru it may have cleared it.

Using valve caps with a seal should stop this.

Have you checked you havnt got a nail or something in the tyre which has now embeded itself enough to seal the hole. Had one in mine that deflated like mad until it had gone in enough to seal the hole.

yeah, i did give the tyre a good looking over, & did not see anything, although i will check again

I'd go with dodgy valve too.

Bit of an unfair comment about Posh though, she's had quite a rack installed.

I have slightly emphasised the key work in that sentence lol

With the trips you've got planned (AE & the 'Ring) I'd get it properly checked over. It could be that if something has embedded itself then you may only really spot it from the inside of the tyre.

And if it's the valve, then it can be replaced there and then.

If it is being caused by some little gremlin (like the one that sits next to my alarm and hits it with a tiny hammer every now and then for no reason - git) then you can be assured that it'll wait for the most inopportune moment to strike next. It's just lulling you into a false sense of security at the moment.

I wouldn't complain if I had a chest like her's, real or fake lol...as it is I've spent all my money on my bike and bike bits so I'll just have to be satisfied with what I've got ;)

OK a few points:
1) if the pressure's low enough the automatic tyre machines often won't work, as they check the pressure first and if there isn't any they assume you haven't attached it yet... There's a "Flat Tyre" button to override this.
2) Pump the tyre up to a nice even 40 something psi and use some fairy liquid watered down, splash that all over the rear tyre and spin it round, any leaks should foam up good, whether it's the valve or tyre (or even the beading between rim & tyre)
3) If in doubt get it properly seen to
4) You do carry a puncture repair kit right?

I know there is a very nice n mint Black '97 'Blade around somewhere - cos the dealer I worked for sold it.;)
If they've kept it original then it'll still have the black exhaust and black frame for the upper fairing - mine are both silver.

I'm more curious if there's another biking crippo out there?!:D
