View Full Version : Best razor?

Fed up with having to use a leccy shaver twice a day, thought I'd give wet shaving a go, get it down to just once a day.
Now I notice shaving has gone pretty hi tech, the twin blade revolution of the 70's I remember now replaced with a multitude of different, (and damn expensive) alternatives.
So far I've tried the fusion zillion blade thingy for a couple of days, and have a mach3 to try next, both freebies from gillette.
Fairly impressed with the fusion, but the heads/blades or whatever they are called aint cheap. I also notice there is even one with a battery in now!

Any reccomendations?

Use the mach3 when I havnt shaved for a bit and the Fusion when shaving every day. The blades for both arent cheap but the fushion ones are more expensive than the mach3 so use the mach3 to get ruined getting the beard off.

I've normally been a sucker for the Mach3, or Fusion, but I've recently been using a Tesco own-brand three bladed thing whose blades are much cheaper than the Gilette, and it's actually pretty good - much lower running costs.

And despite all the hype, I still find that good old fashioned soap (I like Imperial Leather) is one of the best things to shave with... hang all that fancy gelcreamoilfoam stuff.

Bought one of these (http://www.wilkinson-sword.co.uk/index.php?id=1308) years ago cause I liked the design. But after taking half of my top lip off (which I blame for a failed date) I put it away and forgot about it.

In that time I was using some other type of razor (you know the ones, the type they advertise on TV with the latest this and that etc) but the blades wouldn't last long and were expensive. And when I last ran out and forgot to get some replacements I thought I'd give the Classic another delicate go. Once you get the technique right its easy, plus I haven't had to change the blade for about 6 months.

Also its possible to use it for your bikini line, however as a word of warning you will need to have the technique right first :shaking:

I find the Fusion better than the Mach3, but theres not a huge amount in it.

TBH the best blade is a new, fresh, sharp blade, if you use a blunt or dulled blade I found I was more likely to cut myself with that.

Mach3 here as well, got a Fusion one as well but the blades are even more expensive for that. Oh, and personal experience suggests the battery driven vibration thingy is purely for marketing gimmicks and of no practical benefit (in fact it feels more like it's going to cut me up). Do like the single blade at the back of the Fusion though, it's useful as marketing is driving the number of main blades up to ridiculous levels, the main head is too damn big. Ten years from now it'll be the "New Gillette Ultra Fusion, now with 12 blades".

I work from home so don't need to do the daily (that and blond hair tends to give you an extra day grace), always found the head on the Fusion seems too big and just floats over 2/3 day stubble.

Oh, and I second King of Shaves stuff, keeps my delicate features looking beautiful as ever :D

The good disposable ones - they're so so much cheaper which means you can always have a super sharp blade :) The gillettes are just to expensive. As for cream - use the king of shaves gel (looks like its hair gel). Its absolutely brilliant! If your going travelling buy their shaving oil - it saves so much space (it's smaller than a pack of chewing gum) and last for ages :)

I use Noxzema shave foam (best I have found for me personally)

Coupled with a Mach 3 Turbo - old school these days but it does me every other day - would love to buy an electric shaver but at £100+ its a bit too big a gamble for me!

Use a mach3. Nice way they sell. Give one away and then you spend forever and a day buying expensive replacement blades.

Will have to test Dans tesco disposables

They're not disposable, but they are cheap!

It's a Tesco Matrix triple blade - handle's £2.49 with a couple of blades, and a set of four blades is £2.49, or eight for £4.49, so much cheaper to run than a Mach27.

Another Mach3 user (when I can be bothered) and I'd recommend the King of Shaves menthol gel - works great for shaving and it wakes you up good and proper in the morning when the menthol smell hits you!!

I use the mach3 disposables mostly, I find them better than the mach3 blades that go on the non-disposable handle. Aren't we all sucker's for mach3's!?

I tend to only shave every 2-3 days, unless I have a particular meeting / function to go to. My office is pretty relaxed and I'm told I pull off 'designer stubble' ok!

Cheers,
Matt

Used to use a Mach 3 Turbo thingy, now got a Wilkinson Sword Quattro. I hate the cost of blades as well, and the worst thing about them is that because they are these super duper 4/5 blade sealed units the hair gets stuck in them and it's almost impossible to get it out. End up with a clogged blade waaay before it goes blunt.

Tried cheap disposables for a while and they shredded my face so I went off them. Have tried an electric as well but find it is utterly useless and takes 15 minutes to get it to actually catch all the hairs it insists on missing.

In short, I haven't found a decent razor/gel/preparation combo that makes me able to avoid a painful rash. Was thinking of trying one of those old cut-throats. Would love to find a classic barber and just once pay for a pro to do it for me.

I have a top of the line Braun razor (360 Complete), and its better than a wet shave. However, i do like the foamy brush and razor. I have the Mach 3, and the WS Quattro power and non power. All about the same really. I can still get it smoother with the electric afterwards!!!

I have very sensitive skin, so prefer the leccy. I also use Virgin Vie's shaving cream.

Im using the old classic Bic Comfort 2/Erasmic Foam with Clinique M Lotion for after to keep me smooth. I've got really thick beard hair that grows at lightspeed so need a cheap option as I really only get two shaves per razor.

I have a WS Quattro too, a freebie at the time. Enough of an improvement to notice the difference but £6 for 5 heads.....nah.

After a couple of weeks I can now wet shave pretty much without having to look and pain free, despite originally looking like an extra in a slasher movie a couple of times. A wet shave certainly feels much smoother and cleaner than the old leccy razor, though I was hoping just once a day would be enough, which it is so long as I dont mind quite a stubble by tea time. However, the stubble with a wet shave seems much more Clint Eastwood than it ever did with the leccy, which is OK; maybe because it gets cut off rather than ground off.
Thanks to all for your reccomendations. I like the king of shaves gel, better than all that foamy stuff. I like the mach 3, didn't get on with that 5 blade thing.

I'm really fussy about razors. My stubble is fairly stiff and the only razors that I really get on with have been the WS Quatro and now the Fusion. I very rarely use foam, but prefer Somersets" shaving oil, which is generally pain free and leaves my face in better condition.

I have not found an electric shaver that will actually shave my beard without "pulling" it out. Maybe I need to try a good one, but they're bloody expensive.

As for multi blades getting clogged, clean them in running hot water, always does the trick for me..

Last time I had a leccy shave I was just doing A-levels!
Been wet-shaving for the past 20 years since.
Once used a BIC - cut face to ribbons :/
Once used a Wilkinson Sword triple blade - cut face to ribbons (but a better quality of cut mind ).
Otherwise, I've been a Gillette man for the whole 20 years.
Used to use Mach3, but now using the Fusion.
Blades aren't cheap at £7 for 4 but are SUPPOSED to last longer (upto 3 months they say! I'd like to know WTF they were shaving to TEST that on! FFS I have fairly course stubble and so my blades last about a month), but the way I see it is that £7/month on blades isn't all that bad.
As for shaving gels, I've not tried "King of Shaves" stuff, but might do after reading some of the above.
Generally I use the Gillette Fusion shaving gel (best I've ever used), followed by the Gillette Fusion aftershave balm - really does cool the skin ;-)
One thing I WILL say, don't EVER EVER buy Asda's own brand shaving foam - it's only REAL purpose should be for making those shaving foam "pies" that you can throw at people. It really shouldn't ever be put anywhere near your face for the purposes of shaving unless you have a blood transfusion unit on stand-by! Yes, it REALLY IS THAT CRAP!

My 2$ ;-)

Yup, Mach 3 + Alphagel for me too. I recently went back to wet shaving after years of electric and found it has improved beyond all measure since the 80s.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who had selection of handles, ranging back from the mid 80's and I could still buy blades that fit none of them.

Mrs M got fed up with the lot and chucked them out. Now I use Asda's own brand.

Asda triple blade ones, when I first started with it after using a mach 3 it cut my face up something rotten, have to be gentle and as the spring on the tilting bit is much stronger the angle of cut is more important, but I get on ok with them. Plus they're cheap. Guss they are probably similar to the tesco ones. Would have gone for a two blade as they clog less, but guess they don't make so many of them these days.

It's down to the skill / experience not the price of the razor (just like bikes, really). I get a fine shave off of any old cheap pack of disposable razors - Gilette blue 2 right now, though only cos they were on offer.

Maybe it depends on your hair type/thickness - I always find the ones with more than 2 blades clog like buggery. Single blade ones work best if you don't shave every day as they don't clog much.

So long as you take time to get the skin warm/wet then any razor should do the job.

Ok, I'm not sure I should be admitting this really, but I've had a REVELATION.

Gents, the BEST razor out there, without a shadow of a doubt, I've found it....

It's the girly pink Gillette Venus lady bits razor. It's soooo smooth and painless I'm beginning to think girlies have been having us on about a lot of supposedly painful things. I'm thinking childbirth might actually be a cinch, it's all been a big con :D

Serious note, it really works, I'm not sure why as the head is soo massive I'd thought it'd struggle with the rugged contours of my manly chin but it does :D
