(First post - sorry if this is in the wrong place)

After much thinking and rethinking, I reckon I'm ready to buy my first bike - a new SV650 Sport K6, from a local (Hants) dealership.

Now that I'm beginning to look into the insurance side of things, security is becoming a concern....

I need to know the bike is safe, and the insurance cost reflects the investment in the equipment that will be bought to keep it safe.

So: A few questions that I'd like to know (please)

1) The on the road price for this model is £4699 (from http://www.suzuki-gb.co.uk/bike/sv650sport/k6/ ). Typically, would this price include ANY alarm / immobiliser / ID tagging, or are they all going to be optional extras? Suzuki arn't too forthcoming with this info.

2) Confused.com is a good starting point (usually) for insurance. They ask questions on the type of alarm / immobiliser / locks etc fitted to the bike. Given I don't yet own any bike, I need to go shopping at some point. What would be:

a) a good place to do some research into "best buys" etc, and

b) what are 'decent' ones (locks/chains/anchors/alarms etc) that I can use in quotes online (the lists are stupidly large) and submitting 50 quotes is not exactly easy to see a difference in cost :D

Any info appreciated - especially from anyone who's bought an SV650S K6 recently from a dealer

Cheers

Don't pay list price. If you shop around you should be able to get a good discount. If you want to buy your bike reasonably locally then find out where all the local Suzuki dealerships are and phone them all up to see what deals they are doing.

We paid extra to have an alarm fitted to our K6.

hello mate, i got a k6 sport last month, i.d stuff and alarms are all extra's. i store the bike in a mates garage and it costs me £190 fully comp and i have zero no claims, that is with a company called roadsure. as far as locks and chains from what i can gather on this forum oxford stuff seems to be pretty good and not to expensive.

hope this helps you out a bit mate

Insurance; DO NOT USE BENNETTS, THEY ARE CRAP. Good place to start is carol nash, they are specialists, and E-bike insurance, who are affiliated with crescent suzuki (i think?). Consider what you get for your money: I'm a first time rider, on a restricted liscence, and i paid £450 TPFT with carol nash. I also got beakdown cover, pillion cover, legal cover, third party on other bikes, and some other stuff too i think.

Locks: Almax. Its a bit pricey, but a £200 chain is a good investment, better than loosing a £4500 motorcycle. One of those will do, and an alarmed disc lock (Xena, £50), and a smaller chain that will go under the seat easily. Depending on where you leave the bike overnight, you can never have too many locks (and its a great warm up, running around doing the morning Unlockathon!)

Alarms / imobilisers: Be weary of imobilisers, they have a habit of giving more problems than they are worth. An alarm is a sound idea, although it could drain the battery. Worth considering the alarmed disc lock mentioned above, but nothing wrong with fitting an alarm itself, look about for spyball (thats the only name I can think of).

Im sure someone can help you out a bit more!

Matt

Shop around, and see what offers/deals there are.

If you are concerned about security, tell the dealer and see if you can't get them to throw in a few things ... Datatool alarm? (£200), and a few chains and/or disc locks.

More importantly ... BE PREPARED TO WALK AWAY.
Some places would rather get the sale (even if it costs them a few freebies) than to lose the sale (and the potential revenue).

When I got mine, I had them throw in a disc lock (worth £30) and a pair of winter gloves (worth another £30) - not a lot but I was happy.

As for insurance quotes ... do a batch of quotes WITHOUT security, then do a load with the same security ... see which ones have the biggest affect on your insurance ... can't speak for everyone's insurers but my insurance was reduced by about £50 just for telling them that my main security device was a disc lock - so that saving alone paid for the disc lock (well it didn't really in my case cos I got mine "free", but you see my point).

Hope you get a nice shiny one, and then keep it shiny ... and rubber-side down ;-)

Welcome to the org!

Pete

Ladies & Gentlemen,

You've given me enough info so far to keep me busy enough through the whole weekend without having other things to do!

I've had a few quotes so far, but the cheapest I'm down to at the moment is £432 for fully comp and a 9 year car license with no endorsements. As an aside I'm a first time rider, on a brand new bike with no NCB or experience, so I'm going to have to bite the bullet at some point - regardless of whether I have just a chain, or a full arsenal and a few turret guns.

Still deciding if I need FC or TPFT though. Thats for me to sort out in my head though I guess.

The quotes so far have just been guessing random security bits n pieces so I'll go and put some prices to the items above and do more quotes.

I suppose ultimately you could spend the whole year driving the cost down by getting quote upon quote - but you'd never get out on the bike!

Thanks again, and more replies are more than welcome, I've still got a lot to learn.

You're a friendly bunch - thanks again.

Agreed with Sarah.

This is a K6 bike - so made in 2006, we are now most of the way through 2007 :)

Its usually easier to get dealers to throw stuff in than give discount - but I got my K6 last year for £4300, in August.

Tell them you will pay list price only if they throw in the alarm, a disk lock, datatag marking and a chain.

See what you can get out of them

I rekon you will be able to get it for £4000 plus alarm.. A Datatool S4 is ususally whats fitted and it's about £350. The K6 is last years model so dealers will be keen to shift them.

I wanted a K6 Sport when I was looking in July and found my local dealers didnt have any K6 models left. I negotiated a 'Sport' equivalent on the K7, with an S4 Datatool alarm/immobiliser with a delivery on 1st Sept, part ex my CBR and wanted 0% on any balance (Suzuki offered this with the K6 Only). Probably paid over the odds at £4899 but the service I received was excellent, kept me informed of the whole process whilst waiting and only about 6 miles up the road. My insurance with 1yr NCB is £210 Fully Comp with Devitt.

I know I could have phoned all the dealers and played them off with each other but in doing so I would have had less time to ride the bike whilst the weather is good - The SV is not my main transport, weekend and fine evenings are the order for me in my second year of riding.

Each to their own on how the go about getting their bike....I know that I will be going to Suzuki for my next bike in a couple of years and will stay with the same dealer and will be getting a good deal on the then GSXR600

Good Luck with your search

I recently (May) bought a new K7 SV650s and here are my thoughts on your questions:

The on the road price for this model is £4699 (from http://www.suzuki-gb.co.uk/bike/sv650sport/k6/ ). Typically, would this price include ANY alarm / immobiliser / ID tagging, or are they all going to be optional extras? Suzuki arn't too forthcoming with this info.

£4699 is way over the odds for a K6. I did a load of haggling and got my K7 with the lowers and seat cowl thrown in for free for £4599. To be honest there are not going to be many k6's left and your dealer should be chomping on the bit to get rid of it so there should be a deal to be done.

FYI - to get the best deal on mine I rang 20 different dealers telling them the price of the cheapest quote I had so far and then asked if they could do better. I then took this price to my local dealer and he did the deal (although he was rather upset with me!!)

2) Confused.com is a good starting point (usually) for insurance. They ask questions on the type of alarm / immobiliser / locks etc fitted to the bike. Given I don't yet own any bike, I need to go shopping at some point. What would be:

I went with express insurance (http://www.expressinsurance.co.uk/web/bike_insurance.html)(the official Suzuki insurers) and their quote was £200 cheaper than anyone else that I found. My bike is garaged with an immobiliser (cheap one see below). I would also note that I got much better quotes over the phone than online but this may not always be the case.

As standard you dont get any alarm, immobiliser, locks etc on the bike.

a) a good place to do some research into "best buys" etc, and

Loads of things you can get and they are all down to personal preference. The main thing I would recommend is a double bubble screen to keep the wind outta your face. Things that I plan to fit later in the year include loud exhaust and tail tidy.

b) what are 'decent' ones (locks/chains/anchors/alarms etc) that I can use in quotes online (the lists are stupidly large) and submitting 50 quotes is not exactly easy to see a difference in cost :D

Almax Almax Almax Almax. Look this company up on YouTube to see why we like these chains! These chains are pretty much as good as you will get and as a result are a little expensive. I bought 3 chains, a padlock and ground anchor from them for just over £225. I basically have 1 chain over the body of the bike and another through the rear wheeel, the first chain and my ground anchor. This means that someone would have to take the body work off to get the chain off the bike...major hassle.

My third chain is a series III which is lighter for when I go traveling. I also have a Motrox Vishas disc lock and one of the cheap 2-way alarms (http://www.motorbikealarm.co.uk/advalrm.html)which I fitted myself - £50.

Hope that helps,

Jon

PS - some companies dont have the Almax chains listed. In this case is it usually best to give them a call for a quote.

i paid £3995 for mine about 3 months ago.

As others have said, avoid Bennetts, i have just changed over to Express Insurance as mentioned above.....and they were a lot cheaper, and more mod friendly!
