well i was told it was a matter of when and not if, but it happened last night.
going along a dual carriageway that i know well attemted to slow down for a roundabout and just could not stop it. the back end comes out to right, tried to counter it but only made it slide the other way. luckily no serious damage (to me or the sv). bruised hands, shoulder etc, helmet certainly did its job.
the sv needs new right indicators, brake pedal and peg and some tlc.

the thing that bugs me is that i cant think of what went wrong, the road was damp but i was braking in a straight line and managed to loose it, i didnt see the roundabout late or anything like that, very strange, however moments after i come off, a car slides down the same section of road. surely oil, diesel or something. dont want to use that as an excuse but i really cant think of anything else.

"Two types of bikers: Those that have come off, and those that will come off."

Leaving the latter group is part of the initiation! :P

Glad it was only minor.

At least it was nothing more serious, hope you and the bike are fully recovered soon ;-)

Sorry to hear about this fella. With the onset of autumn and plenty of dampness in the air and on road surfaces that, and any kind of residue on the road can cause many a problem.

Best plan nice and easy does it....every time. (yeah just like the song!!);)

Sorry to hear about this. On the plus side, you're a proper biker now. ;)

I've nearly lost it (as in back was skidding about) on approach to roundabout a couple of times. One thing that instigated it for me was breaking from the slippery surface onto the shellac. Presumably, as the front wheel gripped and slowed a bit more, the back (still on the slippy bit) stepped out. Another time it was a dodgy block change (4->2) on my part shortly after an oil change and it didn't want to go into gear, then all of a sudden clicked in violently, locking the back up. The third time was as you describe, no discernable reason, I wasn't even braking particularly hard but the back went all over the shop. I managed to keep it upright, but more through luck than skill. I've tried evaluating what caused it to learn something from it (as I have the other two), but I can't attribute it to anything, so I know how you feel.

Did feel very greasy this morning, felt very unsure on the white lines and such (more than normal)
Don't worry about the bike, only money and time so long as you're alright.
Have you got some crashbungs? I would reccomend them to anyone.

Sorry to hear fella.

As many have said before, falling off is almost inevitable.
Every time I ride (every day virtually) I accept that its possible that I will be surfing tarmac. Thats why I put the gear on, i am attached to my skin and would like to stay that way.

Just because falling of is enevitable it doesn't mean that theres nothing that you can do to reduce the frequency. Think about some advanced training, IAM or the like, doing it through a club is bl00dy good cheap fun.

Hope the pains go away soon.

I feel a bit more nervous about going over the white lines in the rain, early this week its was raining alot here, I just leave extra time for trip in the rain and execpt it will take longer, no point risking it really is there?

If i stayed in lane the trip would take me 2 hours instead of 40 minutes, I just go a bit more steady and pick the lane where theres a bit more room with the odd blip of throttle if anybody's in the way, that way I reckon it gives me the balance between still having enough grip and making progress.

Thats why I ride to work becasue it would forever to get there, so I just pick mt chances for filtering and over takes with mind its slippy, by extra time i mean another 10 minutes on top if its crap traffic and weather!

cheers for the replies peeps, ive already ordered a new right hanger and brake pedal (not easy to get hold of!), just gota get some new indicators, a new lid (obvoiusly it took quite a whack), new gloves (all the knuckle guards have split), and consider my leather jacket because there is holes in it where stones have torn it. the biggest lesson up to now is the appreciation of the safety gear i always wear.
advanced course is definately an option, been reading up on a few things about how people have dealt with a slide. its not an exact science but interesting none the less. the hardest part was trying to get it under control because the whole time i was looking at what my body was going to hit, at a certain point i knew i was coming off, maybe with more experience i could have done better, but maybe coming off has giving me a little more experience.
what doesnt kill you makes you stronger :D

Yup, and this may be just me, but for controlling, and avoiding panicking if something does start to slide then some off road experience is good. (and just an excuse to wheelie my montesa around in the mud for a while..)

:(Bummer. Hope all is well and you get the bike and yourself back on the road soon. Damn diesel I reckon.

LouLou

Definitely sounds like diesel...don't over analyse what happened or you'll end up tying yourself in knots over it. The main thing is that neither you nor the bike are badly hurt. GWS and stay positive :D

Glad to hear you're OK - it comes to us all, just a matter of when. Aside from doing it again to gain experience you could try an off-road day (the bike sliding around and both wheels locking into a skid won't feel as scary after that, just something to be dealt with) and IAM training for observation/planning. Just make sure you get back on the bike and don't let it faze you too much - it's a one-off, not something that's going to happen again any time soon. It'll probably take a while for the confidence to come back but the more you ride the faster it'll return, especially if you keep riding in this weather.
