View Full Version : Avon Storms
Actually, I just thought, you may be out of luck. I'm waiting for a rear Storm for the Dullsville but he has been having difficulty finding one. However the Dullsville is a different size wheel than the SV so you may be OK.

I can't find them locally for less that £210 ride-in ride-out :(
Our favourite Border Patrol tyre fitter did mine for £177 ride in/out. Local tyre place (Buckley Tyres) wanted £210 for a pair fitted to Speedy's SV. I recently paid £82 fitted for a front. So you should be able to get them at a reasonable cost.

Been ringing around again today.
Ride-in (thanks Si) quoted £198.86, which is the best localish place so far, so it looks like I'm going to have to settle for that, unless anyone knows of another reasonably priced fitter in or near Surrey

I`m off out today for a jaunt down to mid wales to scrub them in with 2 other mates who all got fresh rubber yesterday . One of them is trialling a new Continental tyre that`s supposed to be as good as the Azaro but stickier .

Wouldn't believe that, I have tried loads of tyres and I have yet found anything as good as the Storms (well maybe the Azaros). Then again, tyres are a personal preference.
Glad to hear you are enjoying the Avon Storms, I know you won't be disappointed.

Got the shock of my life today , got off the bike at home , cast a glance at the rear tyre and notice my chicken strips have shrunk down to the Storm logos imprinted right on the last edge part of the tyre . Why is it a shock ? , I don`t remember leaning that far and couldn`t get anywhere close to that with the Dunlops .

FWIW my front has just given up the ghost after 9000 miles. Right side of the tyre is pretty bald. Still tread on centre band and tyre still has grip, just it is right at the legal minimum on the right.
The rear was changed after just 4000 miles which was a disappointment, but current rear is about two thirds worn at 5000 miles. This is pretty good given that the VFR is a heavy bike and 3500 of those miles were laden with luggage.
I still rate these tyres very highly in the wet and dry. They will respond to a hoon really well giving more grip than I can use, but at the expense of wear. I believe that 4000 miles from my first rear was due to riding with certain members of this forum at warp 9 for much of that time. Riding more sensibly has seen much lower wear rates.
Latest tyre wear:- My rear is now at the legal limit and needs replacing. It has done 6500 miles, which is pretty good IMHO. I would say 60% of those miles have been with luggage or pillion so cannot complain. I think the touring has taken a toll this time, with 2mm tread on the shoulders but less than 1mm in the centre. Interestingly, Speedy Claire had new Storms on her SV about the same time as I had this rear and has done very similar miles (we have ridden at least 5000 of those miles together) and they are still looking very fresh on her SV.
One thing I have noticed is that these tyres seem to wear very rapidly towards the end of their life, so keep an eye on them as they get low.

210KG and she runs a 180/55 tyre. So getting a wriggle on will stress the tyre a lot as she's a heavy beast.

well the set of Storms are just about dead, and the scores on the doors ?
well fitted to a 240kg Triumph Thunderbird sport (played with a little, 92bhp), the set done 10,445 miles, now the rear probably needed changing 445 miles back, so about 10,000, and the front probably has another 500 or so in it, so say 11,000, not bad no real handling changes thoughout it's life span (excluding the rear which slips a little over the last 4-500 miles, my fault)
Tomorrow I'll be getting a new set fitted as I'm more than pleased with them.
Cheers Mark.
got the storms fitted, all i can say is if anyone is even considering these tyres ... go for it, there awsum... compared to the standard dunlops they are miles apart... i dont have a bravery stick anymore and they are down to about 15mm from the edge already (only done 80 odd miles on them) and i haven't even tried. the grip is great a wee bitty slippy on damp greasy roads but great in the dry and about the same in the wet (raining). my pace has improved and i'm not thinking about the tyres giving way anymore (unlike the dunlops). i was on a country B road the other night and rode into some farm muck, it was a pile of mud and gravel for about 20-30 yards (couldn't even see the tarmac it was that bad, but all i got was a little slipping and sliding (half traction half slipping but the traction was still there). if it had been the dunlops i reckon would have been in a ditch. well done avon for a fantastic tyre....

Just ordered mine from them. When you change to the correct sizing the price changes slightly to £143.99 and on checkout the carriage was £4.99. Still very good value and i'm hopeing they will be far better than the MEZ4's i'm on at the moment which give me zero confidence.

They most certainly will! Streets ahead of Mez 4 on the SV.
Just had my second storm fitted to the Dullsville. Hope I get more mileage out of it than the first one. Mind you, a slow puncture would not have helped the wear rate.

I cant wait! From what you lot have written it will be like a different handling machine with these puppies on. It twitches like hell with the MEZ4's but it dosent help that i have never had a properly round tyre on the bike in the short time i have had it.

Arrived this morning fitted and tested this afternoon and they make the SV seem like a different machine. 5 miles for a basic scrub in gradually getting faster on the corners and 35 miles later the chicken strips are nearly up to where the MEZ4's are. Awesome stuff and so confidence building and so much feel even for a relatively novice rider such as myself.
Just go out and buy some if you haven't ordered any already:smt023

I never thought a tyre would make so much difference to my bike. On the way home, even though they haven't been run in the difference in grip and the way the bike handle was very noticable.

Nah, they just have a lot of fans- the Roadtecs were the same for a while, and the 020s before that (and of course, very few people do enough miles to actually compare them with anything else- I bet you a pound nobody on this board has ridden any distance on all 5 of the main sport touring contenders. So people recommend what they know). They're very good contenders though, you wouldn't regret buying a set at all, but they're not so different from the competition. I'll be looking at Roadsmarts for my next set personally.
The only ones I'd recommend against, now, are the Stradas- I've just had to prematurely replace a front (6000 miles or so) because of drastic uneven wear between the centre and shoulders, the tyre was visibly mishapen in profile, I've seen that happen to a couple of others too on different bikes. I don't ask all that much of my tyres, so it's disappointing to see that, I could understand it if I was a cornering maniac. Roadtecs are almost the same tyre, with different densities, but they don't do it, or at least mine didn't and I've never seen another do the same).

Deffo , without a shadow of a doubt I have not come across ONE bad word about them performance wise , but it is down to personal choice , mine have not let me down one bit over daily use this winter and have only just started to square off a little compared to my other tyres which did it a hell of a lot sooner . Then again that`s down to sensible winter riding on my commute rather than weekend hoonery :)

Just throwing my experience in here with these.
Got them fitted Saturday and only did a few motorway miles on them. Had to be careful because it was lashing it down, so virtually no leaning.
Today we got given an extended lunch in work due to some technical issues, which left me with 30 mins to kill. Went out for a blast on the NSL roads around here with tons of roundabouts in them, and the tyres were amazing. I've done less than 60 miles on them so far, but I've only got about 5mm of chicken-strip left on the right-hand side, and probably about double that on the left. Need to go to France for some left-handed roundabouts ;)
All of that, and never even felt like the tyre was going to let go. I'm comparing this to the PR2s I had on previously, which at end-of-life had a good 1.5cm of chicken-strip left because whenever I got towards the edge the bike would skitter everywhere.
Definitely going to be going for these again in future (until they produce something better ;))
I had a storm put on the rear about a month ago so it nicely bedded in now. Yesterday, the worn Z6 on the front was replaced with a Storm. I've had new tyres before but this is the first time I have ever felt that the front wheel feels as though it is on a patch of ice. I just hope it gets better quick. I don't know if I'm being drawn into the corner or spat out - being really cautious at the moment.:smt017:cry:

Just got rid of a rear Storm today and flicked my Odometer on to the B setting (my tyre wear setting , A for fuel) and it had displayed 6660 miles . The tyre had squared off a fair bit but still behaved well , there were 2 bits of metal stuck in it and it was on the tyre wear indicator , I could have probably squeeked another 500 out of it but MOT is due in 2 weeks and warmer weather on the way . The guy asked me what I wanted to put on the back and I proudly said "Same again please" :)

I've had new tyres before but this is the first time I have ever felt that the front wheel feels as though it is on a patch of ice. I just hope it gets better quick. I don't know if I'm being drawn into the corner or spat out - being really cautious at the moment.:smt017:cry:
Pressures? Bike otherwise healthy?

Having gone past the fifty mile mark now the front seems much better which has made me feel lots more confident and less self concious allowing me to relax a bit more. I think it was just a ludicrously slippery new tyre.
Will recheck pressures on friday when I top up as a matter of course anyhoo...;):smt047

Buckley Tyres make you sign a disclaimer on their forms when you pay for the tyre that you understand to take it easy for the first 200 miles . The guys say that the manufacturers ask for this now as some tyres can have a bit of a "Skin" on them when moulded that needs to be worn through a bit .............. I often wonder what happens when you get cranked right over to the edge onto that teeny bit of strip left that might be a bit iffy .
Then again I get back from rides and look at the tyres and think "Blimey , only a couple of millimetres to go and I`m off those babys"

Seems to be getting them hot that does the scrubbing rather than physical abrasion.

Not got a chance of getting hot in this weather has it , maybe a tad tepid with even the progressive riders . I went to Betwys-Y-Coed last night and gave it some stick on the way back as the tyre was bedded in nicely , when I got home to the front door they were lukewarm but starting to scrub up a bit .

Another one on the back... Fortunately paid for (temporarily!) by MYC... unfortunately on her Birthday!

That's good! I'm expecting about 4k out of my 208rr.
Avon storms are definitely my next tyre.
Avon storms are definitely my next tyre.
this is my current train of thought also
Everyone still happy with there Storms or do they find other stuff of a better quality now?
I'm still in 2 minds as to what tyres I want.

storms still lovely.
warm up quickly, grip even when cold and handel well in the wet even when you push it.
only issue is melted numberplate is rather hard to get off them.
Mine are fine now that they're 'bedded in'. (bit slippy at first).

I had an 'issue' with the tyres on Suzy since shes been running right. I had an Azaro on the front and storm on the rear. Now according to Avon these tyres are compatible, I think they is not! I got the sensation that it felt like going over cats eyes, even over the slightest of rough pathes on the road, or a tiny pothole, or a white line. Yes white lines tyres all doo that, but not to the extreme that this was.
The Azaro had been on there for a couple of yrs or maybe three, but there were no flat spots, much tread(as TBH she not been ridden much since that was put there) my tyre fitter was reluctant to replace a tyre that seemed perfectly fine, if a tad old.The sensation was very un-nerving. He took it out and couldn't replicate the problem. But then he wouldn't hes heavier than me, and rides different, also he was riding considerably faster than I do....grrrrrrr!
I took it last week and had the tyre replaced with the storm. Personally I think the Storm was too planted on the rear, so the front squirmed if you like. Now I have a matching set, and although the weird coating is making the front still squirm, its much more planted on the front, and wibbles less over the same bumps and lumps. I am pretty certain that once that coating is scrubbed off, the horrid sensation will go.:smt003

ahhh, are the profiles mismatched or something? Bit bizarre that - glad it's sorted though.

something to do with the compound, something like that, pkus both Im Indoors and YC said the front was fairly 'cupped' but Rob tyres said it wasn't bad enough to be that much of an issue, either way..its gone!
