View Full Version : Goodbye Martin Jol
He was a decent manager, I don't know why our defence is a leaky sieve this season.
Although I'm glad the awful handling of the situation by the Spurs board is over, he was going to go, it was just a matter of when.
I feel sorry for Martin, undermined by the board and not by the fans. But for a dogdey meal would have earn't hero status by getting into the champions league and pushing Arsenal out at the same time.

Im not a football supporter of any sense but the way this has been handled by the directors of the club should leave them open to a case of constructive dismissal
He's done more for the club for any manager since the 60's
Not a Spurs supporter, but watched their game against Getafe last night. I couldn't believe it when it was reported at half time that he had lost his job as manager. What lousy timing with the poor bloke still sat in the dug out.

terrible actions by the board..
hopefully he'll go somewhere where they appreciate him - he's a good manager.
Bet the Bolton board are kicking themselves mind, the day after Gary Megson is appointed (:?), one of the best managers in the premiership becomes available :D

I agree that Martin Jol has been treated shockingly and most of it within the public domain.
Getafe normally play lovely football to watch, however this season since their talisman coach Bernd Schuster left for Real Madrid, the team has been in free fall and are 2 from the bottom of the Primera Liga. So not a good team to lose at home to presently.
Juan de Ramos is a fantastic coach and normally Spurs would have no chance of getting him. However following several years of unprecedented success Sevilla are not going well at all this season.
I do't think it is the coach or the players it is more the affect that Antonio Puerta's death has had on everyone. Juan de might feel he would like to now get away from the grief that prevails in the Sevilla dressing room.

So let me get this right, he was sacked at half time?

No, The reports that I heard were that they had already agreed a severance package before the game and the rumours were circulating during the second half that he was going at the end of the game.
Someone from Spurs obviously leaked it to the press during the game which further undermined Jol. Jol just sat in the dugout for the game which was not normal for him.

Got to feel sorry for the fella. I think where they went wrong was giving him some money to spend. There seems to be a few managers which are great at getting the best out of an average team but aren't really sure what to do when they have a large amount to spend on players, I mean 17 million on Bent? Still as a Liverpool fan it seems we might not be long before Rafa is on his way after losing to the incredibly average Besiktas.

Spurs have a continental approach to staff. The Sporting Director, Comolli does the signing, Jol has a small say in who who gets signed but Comolli has the final decision in who gets signed and for how much. Jol just coaches them, chooses the team and tactics.

Fair play to the spurs supporters too ... they were standing and applauding Jol at the death (of the game, and his time as manager). He's done wonders for the club IMO. Such a shame his dismissal was so badly handled.
As for Liverpool - I'm a fellow supporter and can't see what all the fuss is about ... we're still unbeaten in the PL, and although we've not exactly been stringing results together you can hardly expect us to be "running away with the title" at this stage!? We have a lot of new players and they will need a season to "bed in". TBH I'm not too hopeful of our chances of anything except Champions League football NEXT season ... however my expectations will be a lot loftier next season. I just hope the board see sense and give Rafa another season. If he doesn't win anything this year, and we aren't playing well next season, then fair enough ... but the guy has just bought a whole load of new players (and we've lost Pako) so the guy needs some time.
Perhaps we need to flog SG like Arsenal did with Henry ;-)
Cash in on him now while we can! Then let the other "just as capable" midfielders have a fair crack ;-)

Spurs defence is so leaky as most of their fullbacks are really wingbacks(Lee, Bale, Chimbonda, Staltieri) and they are weak at centre defence without King. It also doesn't help that Paul Robinson has become this seasons 'bobo the clown' in goal.
I havn't followed spurs that closely, but from what i can tell Zokora has been out for a while and only just come back in, which means they were crap in CM.
THerefore the reasoning for the poor form is that money was not invested in the right areas. Darren Bent was a waste when you have a strikeforce consisting of Defoe, Berbatov and Keane. The money should have been spent at LM and CM.
I should apply for the job, Law do you fancy being my assistant? :)

I agree with buying a left sided player, need to add a bit of experience in the side to balance the youth as well. Should have bought Petrov before Man City did.
We have loads of players that can play central midfield (average ones admittedly) Jenas, Zokora, Tanio, Huddlestone, Malbranque, Ghaly(he's rubbish) Boateng, etc.
Looks like Ramos is linked with the job. again.

Indeed....too many average players. You need someone with a bit of flair to partner Zokora. Van der Vaart seems to be doing well for me in my Football Manager game. :p

Moving away from the emotion in the situation, the link below perhaps gives one a little more to consider.....

So Juande,(That is what the folks call him here in Spain..full name Juan de Ramos) tended his resignation to Sevilla at 10.35pm last night. He states that the offer both professionally and for family reasons is impossible to turn down.
His assistant who is a fitness coach looks to be going with him. Gus Poyet although "apparently" not in the picture, has been asked by his present club Leeds to stay away from the game with Millwall today.
Martin Jol was the best manager Spurs have had for many a year, but Juande is way better than him I can assure you. He turned Sevilla in to one of europe's best by using many unsung players who were still hungry and determined.
Expect wholesale changes at White Hart Lane when the January tranfer window opens and then more at the end of the season. Juande will stand no sh*t from premadonna players.

Whilst i agree he has proven himself a decent manager, i think its a bit much to label Sevilla among the best. Best of the UEFA Cup teams maybe, but they really arn't among the top 10.
I also believe 'unsung players' is potentially a moot point. I guess it depends on how you classify that term. Whilst people may not have heard of them, i put that down to the lack of knowledge English people tend to have of European football.
He has signed a fair few full internationals. Amongst others Chevanton, Kanoute, Kerzakhov, Hinkel, Escude, Fabiano, Maresca, Poulsen etc....the list is endless. Whilst he has undoubtedly assembled a good squad...he hasn't made the players. The majority have enjoyed succesful careers before they joined Sevilla.
I felt that Jurgen Klinsmann would have made the ideal manager for Tottenham, particularly if he signed up players of the calibre of Heinkel, Messerchmitt, Focke-Wulf, Dornier, Arado, Blohm and Voss etc.....

Yup your defence stayed leaky, but Rob Styles again get the award for the premierships worse referee. We got away with some stuff. We were also unfairly penalised, But the Rovers took their 6th on the bounce.
Come on you blues.
