She's also a newbie rider, which is a dangerous combination with a long ride on unknown roads.

Good point Matt.
:)
Yep, quite enjoyable now, but the first few episodes were disappointing.
On LWR they got my respect for taking on the journey. This time they had lost my respect for being so over prepared and taking so much support, full time medic, fixer in every country, safety briefings before crossing borders, etc. Flying a shock absorber from London to Cairo, then having someone collect it and bring it to them took the biscuit! Who else on a bike adventure can do that? It was almost like they were so well prepared, guided and protected that it wasn't an adventure, more of a military operation. Any fool can ride through Africa with that much support.
Now they have got my respect back. This time it's not for the journey, but for the work they are doing supporting the charitable projects. Some of the stories of kids getting massacred and being abducted and trained as soldiers, etc are pretty hard to swallow. Ewan and Charley are doing what they can to make a difference and that's worth respect.
I agree :smt045
It's getting better.
Ewan's wife is on next week. I hope she's a good rider as I want her to show lady bikers in a good light. She aint a babe though ;)
not likely ..... when Ewan fell off and broke his leg she said she hated bikes, and her first attempts on one were embarrassing! It seems she just wants to tag along, and is not an actual 'biker' lets hope I'm wrong but I think she will let the side down

I know a lot of it feels as if there being covered in cotton wool, but I don't think this is nessacarily their fault.
How much has Ewan McGregor got to be worth to the Movie Industry. I sure he is insured for a sum you and I will never earn in our lifetimes. I think the only way his agent and insurance company would let him do a trip like this is if he took certain precautions; ie: The Medic.
Africa is far more lawless than Europe, America and the Former Soviet unions so I'mnot suprised they have fixers. I'd want them travelling to certain places like they are.

My first attempts on a bike were embarrassing... but I gutted it out and overcame it.
If she's got any real fire for it, she'll stick with it but I'll tell you what... she's a noobie rider on tv, something none of us have done. I had points where I lost all confidence and thought about giving up. If I'd been making a documentary about me I would've looked like I wouldn't make a 'proper' biker... So don't be too harsh on her just yet. The proof will be in the pudding AFTER all this.
If she's carried on after the series, then she's genuine.
Good point Ping, I must admit when I heard that she was tagging along for the journey it did seem like she was spoiling the trip which was about Charley and Ewan but wait and see. If she enjoyed it and continues afterwards that has to be a good thing i'm sure.

Three might be a bit of a crowd.
Unless she goes off and has an affair with the "fixer":smt056

I'm afraid I can't see how it is going to work out. She hates bikes and is just jealous of their friendship. She is a novice rider going to ride in some very hard terrain. And as you saw in the little preview clips, she falls off once and then you never see her again. my guess is that 1 mile into the trip she comes off, cries cos she can't do it and flies home. And Charlie secrelty grins a lot.

CHARLEY
I've met him and told him he was an ace rider, and he said he felt a bit crap compared to the BSB riders he was sitting with (this was at ally pally a few years back) but I said he was great off-road, specialy when he was in russia on the long way round, those where bad roads
Would be great to hang out with those guys, I like their sense of humor :D

I would give both balls to be able to go on a trip with them two. Seriously, without my balls I wouldn't bash them on the tank as Ewan did :)

I can't stop staring at Charley's brown tombstone teeth. It's like Mr Ed.
I like Charlies little happy wheelies ..... I know that feeling, I cant wheelie but sometimes you just wanna!
They both seem genuine enough .... bikes on tele on a Sunday, can only be good I guess :)

I get that feeling too! but instead, I just rev my bike as I can't wheelie either. I did a wheelie one day though, off some lights, the front end went light. I giggled all the way to uni (5 miles).

Nice teeth too ;) I think they,re both pretty cool tbh, I mean Ewans an A list actor and yet he just wants to mess about on bikes with his mate, we should invite them to AR 08
Call me crazy, but I'm sure I was reading posts in this thread today about the final episode 2/12/2007. I even posted some gibberish about how it was a little dull. I've looked for another LWD thread, in vain. Did I imagine it? Posts deleted? Totally different thread?
Clueless :)

Just finished watching this... have to say a was a little disappointed. LWR was great! Couldn't stop watching it and was really gutted when it was over, but LWD, I wasn't really fussed.
The whole thing came across as over-produced. Whether it was the terrible music, the constant scheduling sticking or the fact that the producer/directors seemed to want to get into the spotlight a lot more... I don't know. Even the final run into Cape Town and the retrospective footage cut in with the ride was too cheesy. Just felt like on LWR they had no idea whether it was going to be a success or not (as a documentary) so felt quite raw whereas LWD was always going to attractive viewers and therefore money and they ended up polishing it way too much.
I agree about Ewan's wife, silly old moo.
Talk about put the whole crew in an awkward postion.
We have just finished watching it on DVD - yep i can't believe she went on the trip - and all the times Ewan's family were around as well
