I can't wait for this. But it makes me so jealous it's untrue :(
I've started reading the book at work.....yep, i'm that busy lol.
All going great in chapter one, while still in uk. One broken ankle, one case of pneumonia, one person chucked off a plane over a bomb threat comment etc. etc.
I think they're right to be worried about the Congo/Libya/Zimbabwe etc when they attract this kind of stuff at home.

That was really amazing. I find it so inspiring and I am so jealous, if only I had the money to do that. I am certainly going to do my own little version of it this summer though now! It raised two points though:
1) What was that nonsense about Charlie in the airport being stopped for SAYING the word "bomb"?? Talk about pathetic state of our anti-terrorist scaredy culture. It's Charlie Boorman, you surely know that he hasn't got a bomb, he has spent 3 months planning his trip! I dunno...
2) Ewan's wife is really insensitive. How can she put Ewan in that position, asking to come along? She has never ridden a motorbike in her life, and plainly hates them, and expects to ride the length of Malawi?! Crazy! And poor Charlie can't say a word against her. Stupid woman should butt out of it.
Anyway, bloody great other than that.

Seconded, it does take that element of risk out of it. Also means more people more likley to get into trouble
You should be able to carry all the kit you need on your own bike
Mind you, they are filming it, they need one car to carry all the camera's etc

IT was the GS650 X-country. There's that, the motard version and the taller X-challenge which seemings is a serious on/off weapon. The former is the allrounder.

Its all very well moaning about the kit and backup, but they are making a TV show. There will be times when they are all alone and it will be a real adventure of two guys with bikes (I hope). HOWEVER, yes, its a bit different if the get sick in Ethiopia than if you, me and Hovis ;) were travelling through Africa and got sick in Ethiopia, I suppose.
As a LWR fan not detractor, I didnt enjoy it much. It wasn't really very good but fingers crossed it will get better when they get on their own in Africa. I thought the planning programme on LWR was much better. That was about the upcoming journey more, or so I remember. Last night was too personality based, but maybe that will become necessary in context, so will wait and see. The family situation would have ****ed me off.
The Desierto fairings went on.....then came off...http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/lol8.gif
Good luck to them. Maybe my view is a little different as when I saw LWR I was only just getting a GS (not as a result I hasten to add, it was on order http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/Augie.gif) and since then I have met folks who have headed off on trips like this so there is less mystique, perhaps.
But as I said above good luck and great trip. I wonder if the 4X4 stuff could be as fun to watch.
I wonder if you had not seen LWR would you be as confused as hell by last nights prog?
Out of interest I know a couple of South Africans just setting off for SA now. They had prepped two KTM 640ADVs, and both were nicked from Ross-on-Wye 2 weeks ago. They have sourced replacements though and the trip is going ahead. What a ****er though.

I watched it, I didnt really enjoy it, there was non of the build up like they had in LWR, but I suppose they've learnt their lessons from LWR and didnt repeat alot of the mistakes again.
I dont know Ewan really narks me off, he's so negative, all that "Oh I cant do it stuff he comes out with, its almost like he looks for things to go wrong" I thought Charlie was much more positive this time, but I suppose with his Dakar experience under his belt he's going to be.
I'm hoping it'll get going a bit next week though.
As for the missues, I'd have no problem with Liz coming with me if I was doing a trip like that, but Liz is an experienced rider and I'd have planned it that way from the start, its hell of a thing for somebody to do even a few days when they have little or no biking experience, I dont envy Charlie being stuck in that situation I thought he was very diplomatic TBH.
Forget all the talking, we just want to see them riding and hear the bikes.
Having not seen LWR, I loved it last night. How good was BBC2 last !!!
Eve F... off & let the boys do it ( I mean the motorcyclists - agree with Fizz apart from didn't notice Ewan being negative :???:))

Yeah I didn't notice Ewan being negative. I thought if anyone was negative it was the "survival expert" at that camp. They should have shown a lot more of Ray Mears! (he is a god). I thought it was a great build up show, and really looking forward to them setting off. I don't think having 4x4s really detracts too much, things will still go wrong, but they won't die from them. And they do need to film the whole thing. It is still ace!

Probably a trip to Brighton hahaha! In all seriousness, I have just been invited to go to Holland this january by my two wicked mates. I can't think of a wetter and flatter time and place, but the guys are cool, so you should tag along if you want a trip. As for the Parid - Dakar thing, lend me £5K and I'm there 8-)
I really enjoyed LWR, but this one seemed a little contrived to me.
Plus I found Ewan really annoying in this.
I still prefer Mondo Enduro or Terra Circa when it comes to adventure motorcycling films.
IMHO, considering that Ewan is an A list hollywood celeb I think he comes across as a likeable well rounded chap. As for LWR to LWD, its never going to be as fresh as they have done this all before. in short never do a sequal.
As part of unicef, Ewan could quite easily do a few trips now and again with the accompanying press conferences and let Unicef sought it all out. But no, he gets involved through all stages, from planning to working on his own bike to packing all the equipment. In short, his passion is clear and we should applaud him for that.
Anything that promotes biking, bikes and the adventures is great IMHO.

Totally loved it. Thought there were bits that were a bit too repetitive from LWR, but loved it.
However, the whole Eve coming along thing......I wouldn't do that to my husband (if I had one!), as it's obv a lads thing! Plus saying that you're going to do it, when you don't have a licence? That's just daft?!?!! Will see what happens I guess.

Just cos he's spent 3 months planning his trip and is with a film crew shouldn't give him card blanche to be a total tit IMHO....

i think LWR will get better though, the survival bit was a bit crapy, as the have the jeeps as back up
if anybody else had mentioned "bomb" in the airport i dont think they would have got off so easy (if thats what happened)

You all seem to have missed the one thing that stuck with me.
Charlie got on a later plane right...afetr the english producer guy said he "stepped in as it was getting a bit heated" with the cops.
Then Charlie rides in and says he doesnt know where he got his black eye from... PMSL!!! So he said the word BOMB and get a little lairy to the cops and got a smack in the eye for it did he? Shame they didnt film that bit
Cant wait for the trip proper to start now...roll on next week.

Has everyone gone crazy? I am sorry to have to use capitals like an illiterate fool, but he MENTIONED, the WORD, "bomb"!! I mean, is that dangerous?! Is that inciting hatred? Is it extreme terrorism? My point about him planning for 3 months was not that he is a celeb and can get away with it, but more that why would you spend three months planning a trip with your best mate and then blow yourself up on a plane at the start? He should never have gotten so in trouble for it. Plus I hardly think it classes as acting a total tit. Britain has gone crazy about terrorism now, it's curtailed everyone's freedom and the would-be terrorists are loving it.
Out of interest I know a couple of South Africans just setting off for SA now.... and both were nicked from Ross-on-Wye 2 weeks ago.
Why would anyone want to steal two Sarf Afrikaans.....they are qite cheap in Tesco I believe.
Read an extract in MCN the other day, and the context of the bomb comment makes it even more laughable. Charlie had his bag about arms reach from where he was sitting, the stroppy airport person who was treating them like dirt for wearing jeans in the business lounge told him to keep it on his lap and he jokingly said "relax, it's not like there's a bomb in it or anything"
So now we can be detained by the police for stating that we don't have bombs?

Finally got around to watching it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It may not have the same level of expectation as LWR but then as someone mentioned earier it's basically a sequal so we kind of know what to expect.
For the life of me I can't think why Ewan's missus would want to take part in this. The cynic in me thinks it's the producers idea intented to create some additional friction and tension later in the show between him and Charlie. Maybe she just wants to share in the experience, who knows?
And that survival training was a waste of time. Ewan's a Jedi Knight for crying out loud...

"You don't want to murder us and steal our bikes. These aren't the bikes you're looking for"

The only ep of the LWR I saw had Charlies bike knackered in Khazakstahn (or similar), a blacked out car pulled up & Ewan said to the camera:
"These aren't the bikes you're looking for...move along, move along".
So this was young Obi Wan, speaking words he was going to say later in life as old Ben. I laughed. A lot.

He comes across as just another one of the boys who happened to be good at acting and got a break in some good films. If you think back 10 years to Trainspotting, he was just some skinny spotty Scottish 20something who was just making a name for himself (was Shallow Grave his first film?)

Just watched the episode today (4th Nov). There's a lot of emphasis on keeping to the schedule which is kinda spoiling it.
I loved the ride through Mongolia in the Long Way Round. I wonder if anything will be as good on this trek.
They seem to be stuck in an uncomfortable no man's land between "travelling", a holiday, and Work - as in making a TV program - with emphasis on the Work bit i.e making schedules. You can't have it all I suppose,,, :(

These 2 really wind me up to be honest, dire banter accompanied by hysterical laughter, and little to say apart from the big 'LOOK AT ME' stuff! Hardly an adventure at all considering all the back up and the schedule. I'm not sure what the point of this is, certainly not travel journalism or much in the way of entertainment, just a couple of spoilt children moaning there way through a fantastic opportunity. I liked the bit when they met that Swiss couple though who had travelled through Africa on their own with no apparent backup. They were both in their 60's and found the time to make them both dinner. No comparison to the Top Gear team who make it fun, interesting, and occasionally inspiring.
Ewan mate, go act, and Charlie go back to whatever it was you did before you tried pretending you were interesting!
Probably just me though

Although I don't like the argueing on this one as much. And that arsy American who after being told he couldn't get a visa said" take your sunglasses off when you talk to me".
Warthog, if I understood correctly, he wanted the guy to take his sunnies off cos he thought he was joking - he thought the guy would reveal the joke with them off but then realised he wasn't joking!
I didn't really see the issue though, he was going to meet up with them again three days later!
I never watched the LWR but have started watching this series. I'm enjoying it to a point but I did think it would be better TBH. A few things have come across as being very contrived and I thought it would just be two blokes, two bikes and lots of adventures. It's more like a travelling circus!
Enjoying it but could be better so far. I know that the main body of their journey is supposed to be Africa but I've no idea why they didn't try and schedule some more time in for the south of France and all through Italy. The roads are much better than anything in Africa!
Cheers,
Matt

Not really comparable tis true, but at least it's entertaining. The LWD team just haven't got anything to say so far about their journey, and every problem just seems to get passed on to somebody in the office, and every opportunity seems to get passed up without anything to say. I think there too wrapped up in their own ego's to be creative in their interpretation of events.
They should have just gone on their own and made the best of it, or taken with them somebody who is actually interested in adventure

So far I'd say LWR is better, and is more as you describe - two (well, three) blokes on their bikes traveling.
I have to say though, I don't really know why people think that support vehicles take anything away from the experience, they're still riding all that way.

Watched part of last night's episode and TBH it didn't look fun at all, especially with the Health & Safety Police hanging around ("no wheelies"?!) and some bloke rushing them along to catch a ferry every step of the way.
They're in such a rush they don't really get to stop and do much/meet people, and anyway how relaxed are local people gonna be when you've stuck a camera in their face? And surely half the fun is getting out of scrapes and dealing with rubbish border officials, etc rather than having someone do it all for you and a back up crew for any eventuality.
I really hope for their sake that they get some of those things sorted ASAP, as even they didn't seem to be enjoying it that much...

I can remember having a great time riding to Spain and back. But sometimes it didn't matter how much fun I was having, after 2 weeks of riding I was damn tired and it didn't take much to anoy me.
True, but they have only been the bike a few days and they are moaning already. They got wet because they didnt prepare properly, you'd think they'd have learnt...
Fizzy Fish - They'd have more time if they hadnt spent 4 days gonig from John O Groats back to London, why spend time exploring Scotland when they have such a big trip in front of them.
Just seems sometimes it like watching two Schoolboys mucking about...

A few comments:-
Aint it supposed to be about a few blokes going for a ride though? The LWR was great until they hit the USA and then it kinda petered out.
There's a few people I know who talk about the program like they're on the ride.
I'm sure that once they go wild (get into Africa) away from hotels etc things will get tougher and we'll enjoy it - I hope.
More like Top Gear - No thanks :(
im i watching the same program here ive seen more moaning in this thread than on the long way down i think its great and they seem to be having a great laugh, lighting farts and wotnot, ya moaning about someone moaning how daft is that lol

Rain and we got it just as bad as that, made us laugh, cause we got just as wet!!
Sat down and watched this with the Mrs last night. Quite entertaining TV I thought. Have to say the Mrs had no clue who either of the guys were  but its the first time she was agreeable that biking looked like fun.... :)

Yep, quite enjoyable now, but the first few episodes were disappointing.
On LWR they got my respect for taking on the journey. This time they had lost my respect for being so over prepared and taking so much support, full time medic, fixer in every country, safety briefings before crossing borders, etc. Flying a shock absorber from London to Cairo, then having someone collect it and bring it to them took the biscuit! Who else on a bike adventure can do that? It was almost like they were so well prepared, guided and protected that it wasn't an adventure, more of a military operation. Any fool can ride through Africa with that much support.
Now they have got my respect back. This time it's not for the journey, but for the work they are doing supporting the charitable projects. Some of the stories of kids getting massacred and being abducted and trained as soldiers, etc are pretty hard to swallow. Ewan and Charley are doing what they can to make a difference and that's worth respect.

She's also a newbie rider, which is a dangerous combination with a long ride on unknown roads.

My Wife.
Yeah - I don't let her out of her cupboard much :p.
Not unbelievable though - She hasn't seen any of his movies - Trainspotting was off the wall and she doesn't like sci-fi. Moulin Rouge she should ve seen but didn't - cant think of any others worth mentioning. She doesn't do bikes - so no idea about the first series. And she only buys a couple of crappy women's mags every year
