View Full Version : Michelin Pilot Sports
Any good?
I've got Pilot Road 2s on my Triumph, which I've been very happy with. Now the SV needs new boots and I've found the Pilot Sports at 127 quid a pair. Just wondering if they're much cop - my riding is 15 miles each way of fairly fast paced A-road commuting, with a bit of town work at each end. The bike gets used every day, come rain or shine, snow or drought.
I'm not too worried about the life span given the price, but good grip is a must, especially in the wet.

Good evening.
I've supplied a fair few pairs, usually at the customers request. The reports are favourable, considering the price.
Cheers.
Thanks for that, I've learned to trust your word so the Sports it is.

Morning all.
I've just been perusing my tyre catalogue. The old Pilot Roads are are about another £18 from my supplier. They would probably be more suitable for all weather use, & would last longer too, which would somewhat offset the difference in price.
If the supplier you're using could supply them at say another £20 they would be a better bet I think.
They are one of the better selling sports touring tyres, below the Road Attack & the BT020. & are still very popular.
Cheers.

I have them on my curvy. my mate has them on his R1 and my other mate has them on his R6. Best tyre i have ever had. wouldn't buy anything else. The extra confidence they gave me after changing from Dunlop 208's was fantastic
Before I got my PR2s, which I am very pleased with, I had Pilot Roads. They flattened off much too quick for my liking. Done 5000+ so far on the PR2s and no flat at all. Maybe it's cos I avoid Mways now.. ;)
got um on the blade, i like um.............2 pairs @ busters £240
Well, my tyre supplier didn't have a rear to suit, so on the advice of my ex-girlfriend I ended up with Diablo Stradas. They can't be all that bad, she was doing this kind of thing on them when she had Stradas on her Daytona 600:

Your on about pilot roads. Pilot sports are a totaly different tyre. Pilot sports are a soft-medium compound sports tyre that give you exceptional grip in the dry and good grip in the wet. Pilot roads are more of a touring tyre. Pilot sport will wear down quicker than pilot road as thats what they are designed to do. but it all depends on how you ride your bike to what tyre you get. i.e sports bike sports tyre, touring bike touring tyre.

Michelins suck behind, they are the worst tyres ever!!!! :smt019

And you've tried them all to make a statement like that?

As Michelin road tyres go I've only ever had issues with the Macadams used on the original Bandit 1200s, the rest I've tried have been fine. Different tyres suit different bikes and uses.

Bearing in mind they have produced many many different tyres over the years, I think it is safe to say Nope!!!
It is a sweeping statement sure ... but I have tried quite a few of their tyres over the years, and under a variety of uses/circumstances/mileage ... certainly enough to have a fair sample set and to make my own decision about them as a whole ...
Off the top of my head, I have used - Pilot Race, Pilot Race 2, Pilot Road, Power 2CT, Macadam 100*
And my conclusion is that Michelin suck behind!! ... bigtime!! ... they get the big  from me!! I have sworn to NEVER EVER buy a Michelin again!! To me, they fail on the most fundamental levels of a tyre from a riders perspective ...
*As it happens, I have that on the back of my SV at the mo (and had them on my old CBR6 at one point).
Tires can be a touchy subject.
Back on an FZ-1 (Fazer 1000) message board back home, the vast majority dislike the OEM Bridgestone BT-020 tires those bikes came with from 2001-2005, though I liked them for cooler weather.
I used the Pilot Sports back when they were the latest thing from Michelin (starting around the year 2000, I'm guessing), and I think these were the first tires to wear the Pilot designation (which first struck me as a bit corny-sounding, but I've grown used to it).
I felt they were just fine - felt good, absorbed the bumps, great traction.
If I have a criticisim for them, it's that they wanted nice, warm weather and took longer to warm up than the present day Pilot Powers (though to be fair, I feel that any performance tire is going to demand warm weather to really get it on).
My opinion is that unless you're getting these for free, go with the latest Pilot Power or Pilot Power 2CT.
They really are better tires.

Michelin - Pants pants ...total pants!!! .... why does noone believe me?!?!?! :smt019
Or more importantly, how come no one can tell themselves they are plops, are you really that easily pleased!?!
I really like the way these tires (Pilot Power and Pilot power 2CT) feel and perform.
I'm curious as to what happened to you to bring about your dislike.
I can respect someone else's opinion because, like I said, tires is a touchy subject.

If anybody here runs on the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT I would highly recommend you try the Dunlop (yes I know, I was suspect about them too) Qualifier RR. I had to replace the 2CT's due the the recall on them and I couldn't get hold of a front, sooooo I was recommended the new Dunlop Qualifier RR. These tyres are the best tyres I have had on my Daytona 955i by a good margin. They are superb in the wet and excellent in the dry. They turn easily and consistantly (didn't like the B'stome 014's always felt like it fell into the corner rather than turned) but require a reasonable amount of input through the bars (which I like). I have had excellent wear from them so far; bearing in mind that they are a sports tyre, I'd be most suprised if I didn't see 5K from the rear.
They get the big :smt023 from me.

Blue = True
Red = False (All in my Opinion!)
Obviously this may be different on the Daytona for you ;)

Lost a lot of confidence as the bike would break away at random points – a few pretty big crashes that were solely down to tyres. They have no ‘feel’ and are extremely heat sensitive … two factors that I think are quintessential to ‘good’ tyres …

Just like your womens behinds right?!!? :D
Seriously though, if you don’t care about your tyres then why do you pay for ‘good’ /main brand ones?? (I presume you do).
