the bike is stamped with a VIN and engine number from the factory so that KTM can keep track of them, but the DVLA is basically a database of registration numbers and what VIN/Engine numbers they correspond to, they don;t issue VINs, just the registration documents that relate to that particular vehicle

just got off the phone with MCE, the guy was very helpful and managed to get me a quote of £576 FC or £286 TPFT, which i reckon i'll take - the only other big broker left to phone was bennets, who i'm trying to avoid...

Good that you got it sorted, but it's strange that the process isn't the same as for a new bike. For that, you can get a registration, but you can't get tax of course, which is why dealers need to see your insurance certificate for them to tax it and let you ride it away...

if the bike were designed for road use it would be, but the 560 comes with slick tyres and no lights or battery as standard. all bikes produced in the last 10 years need to be european type approved, which involves lights / noise / emissions test etc etc, however if the bike meets certain criteria it can be exempt from type approval. all bikes like the SV are already type approved, but the 560 isn't

Can't you just get it SVA'd in that case? That assigns you a reg :)

I'm not sure if the cost is prohibitive though, I only hear of it being done on import cars, but I would have thought grey import bikes (thinking of 400cc bikes) need it too :-k

i was waiting for you to pop up here:cool:

i was speaking to blane, very helpful and friendly and really fought to beat eBike for me, couldn't quite get them in the end but the hassle of insuring with someone else then cancelling and taking out another policy makes it worthwhile going with MCE...

one other question - not sure what underwriter the quote was with but is it likely i could put the SV on the same policy, i remembered that if i use my 1yr NCD on the SMR then it's not avilable to use on the SV, adding about £80 to the amount it'll cost to insure...

no, if a bike meets european standards it qualifies no matter what country it was manufactured for it is valid in the UK, most cars/bikes will have been assessed for the whole of europe and as such they are type approved from new, the problem comes when the SMR is supplied with non-road-legal tyres etc etc, and so cannot be type approved, unless you fit lights, e-marked tyres, speedo etc etc...

i could get it SVA'd but it's much easier if it's exempt from type approval;) - one reason for exemption is if the bike is an "enduro" bike, which the DVLA classify as a bike with a minimum ground clearence of 310mm and a min seat height of 900mm, which the 560 meets.

cool, i've just got one more lot to phone tomorrow but if they can't beat you guys (and considering the quotes i've had so far they'll have to do something pretty special) i'll be in touch in the afternoon to confirm it, if the SV has to go on a separate policy then so be it

cheers:cool:
