This may be obvious but have you tried adjusting the cable at the other end (engine end). I have found on mine that with the new route the clutch cable become very tensioned and the lever adjustment range just wasn't enough. Once I relaxed the other end, everything fit comfortably with some room to spare at both ends.

Thanks for the idea but, I think I'm going to go with a "naked" clutch cable, just seems to be the most common solution, easy and cheap too.
