When you refill fork you fully compress the leg, (spring out), fill with oil. Gap between oil and top of leg is the air gap.

cool cool ill remeber that.

this is important because?
at a guess im thinking that when the fork is all back together this air helps with damping? as air is compresable but oil isnt. is this correct or am i weeing up the wrong tree.
ive done a bit of work on hydralics on forklifts.

Not damping, it helps the spring. Basically air is a progressive spring built into fork. If you make air gap smaller it helps resist bottoming out on brakes, make it bigger it lets you use more travel and get most benefit from suspension.

ever since ive had the bike if i go over a bump (sleeping policeman) a bit to hard i can hear the forks bottoming out.

heavyer oil and less of a air gap would stop this, but more of a gap will help with cornering

There is a clunk in them normally

just another normal sv noise.

with a haynes and a couple of us that are fairly tecnically minded.
how long should i leave to do this job?
any nasty suprises i should be aware of?
any insider tips that might help/stop me turning the air bluer than needed

Impact gun makes life so much easier.

Re: fork seals leaking & what oil do i need?

oh yeh im sure it dose. and at times ive thought if only i had one.

but i dont think one is needed on the forks.

i love owning a sv makes me so involved in the mechanics of a bike ie every month there seems to be sum thing that needs fixing.

at the mo its fork seals and a dead battery ive checked everything and the bat isnt holding charge. but looking at it it looks like a oem one so if it is thats 11 - 12 years old as its a 1999 bike

Wait until you are fighting with damper rod bolt.
