No you put both washers on left (in this diagram) number 1. That is both on the bolt head side, not the nut side.Don't worry about the gap its normal.

Sorry for reviving an older thread, but this situation is what I am in now. I was just wondering though where the OP got his 2nd hand shock serviced? How much did it cost and how long did it take to do please?
