How do you get the last piston out?

of your calipers :smt013

Re: How do you getthe last piston out?

Pump them against something so they are a mm from popping, remove the something, remove the pistons.

This may be tricky if you have already removed one. ;)

Answer: With more brute force
via Standing on the caliper and 2 hands on the pliers.
Was using 3 dust seals round the piston to protect it as I'm replacing them anyway - only damaged the last couple of mm of the piston - should be reet :smt102

Yeah I thought I did that - obviously not pumped them out enough. especially the first ones to pump out as I thought they would be easy

that's what I was doing - the green dishwashing scruber clothes without sponge was quite goodlooks good - but for the number of times I would use it  and by they time you realise you want it - it's too late.
But thanks anyway :D

I think it was xXBadgerXx posted a good tip the other day. Put a few cable ties tight around the protruding piston, then you can grip them with mole grips / stilsons without damaging them. Then twist and ease out...

Yeah I saw that & tried it. the ziptie came off too easily for me but it gave me the idea of using the seals.

Pop the other piston/s back in & lock them there.
Reattach line & use lever to pop sticky one out.

Don't use mole grips if you can avoid it. Pump both pistons out with the fluid. One usually comes first, use a G-clamp to hold it while you pump the other out, but protect your caliper with a piece of scrap wood, otherwise you will muller the paint. Then when they're both wobbly, just work em out with your hand. G-clamp is good for getting them back in as well, just protect the caliper! I didn't.

And keep an eye on the fluid in the reservoir, if the lines are still attached. I made this mistake on my car and got brake fluid everywhere :(

Yeah, that's what i did. It's just harder in practice when I've got 6 pistons instead of 2, and it always ends with one that's difficult to get out long after I've disconnected the hydraulics.

Good morning all.

Providing there's enough piston protruding from the caliper, put a jubilee clip of suitable size around it, & use grips. Warm the caliper body first with a blowlamp, or hot air gun. Then try to rotate the piston before attempting to withdraw it. Make sure the jubilee clip doesn't slip though, or you may score the pistons.

Cheers.

Might as well change the fluid while you're at it. Or is this old fluid from the calipers? I made a mess all over as well, best to cover the discs and paintwork as best you can, saves a lot of cleaning.

Leave the caliper on the disc, take pads out, pump pistons. Disc stops 5 of them falling out while the 6th remains stuck.

That usually gets them out far enough that jubilee clip + grips can get them out easily.

These are from ZXR same 6 pots as 'busa right?

Ah, that's an idea, I guess I'd just be worried about damaging the discs especially because I'd be only servicing the calipers when they are dragging so not retracting.

yup, same

Airline!

I'm in Biggin Hill if you happen to be passing, I can pop them out for you in seconds.

so how does this work? I guess you have to put the other 5 pistons back in & secure them?

Thanks for the offer but I did post that I got it out 8 mins after putting the thread up.

Airline is ok, but if you get one that is actually seized then they will laugh at air. My compressor goes up to about 160psi. Maybe you have higher one. Also you still have to put other 5 pistons back in.

Re: How do you get the last piston out?

Like ipap I always use my airline, and I've never had one I couldn't get out...perhaps I'm not letting them seize for long enough...?

The only danger with using air is it will go with one hell of a bang if you do it uncontrolled. I put several old pads in the caliper (with it on the workbench disconnected from the bike) and then blow the pistons out a bit, remove one pad and pop them out a bit further...and so on making sure all the pistons come out evenly. Easy and much less mess than trying to do it on the bike.

Probably.
When they are secondhand calipers and the dust seals are rolling out of their recesses then air does not shift them. Ones that get serviced at decent intervals are fine.

Stu 19-02-10 07:56 AM

Re: How do you get the last piston out?

once dust seals are rolling out, you can pull them all the way out before removing he piston.

I know this
