Clutch lever suggestion - achey hand?
Hi all
I am really suffering when riding at the moment...never had the problem with any of my other bikes, but I find my left hand really hurts/aches when riding the SV...everytime i pull the clutch in the muscles really start to hurt...Normally starts playing up after about a 15 mile ride onwards... I think it may possibly due to being a girl i have smaller hands and so it is a bit more of a stretch, I have adjusted the lever slightly to try a different angle but it doesnt really help. Any suggestions? I just need the lever to be closer to the bar so its less of a stretch. Are there any other levers out there that would be suitable (sorry if dumb question!!) :smt026 |
Re: Clutch lever suggestion - achey hand!?
yep, an easy fix (well hopefully), loosen off both the clutch and brake levers and twist them down, say about 15 to 20 degrees on the bars. This way yours hands wont be at such an angle to your arms and they wont hurt as much. Watch out for the clearances with the fairings and cables but this makes a big difference. It was the first mod I did when I had a pointy a few years back and it works a treat.

Re: Clutch lever suggestion - achey hand!?
If you have smaller hands its possible to adjust the clutch so that the biting point is nearer the handlebar. This makes the stiff bit easier, as you have more strength the more your fingers are curled. It's a fine line though as you have to make sure the clutch isn't dragging.

Re: Clutch lever suggestion - achey hand!?
i have very small hands and dont have a problem at all so i think its somthing to do with the position of the leaver, adjust it but take the spaner with you go for a long ride and test out the positions untill you get one that is comfotable

If you adjust it too far, you can't find neutral. |
Re: Clutch lever suggestion - achey hand?
5hort5 is right, tilting the lever down a little can make a big difference

Re: Clutch lever suggestion - achey hand?
Would bending the lever (after suitable application of heat) be a workable idea?
If this is completely wrong and/or dangerous, then mods please delete or edit with "FFS NO!" or some such! |

Re: Clutch lever suggestion - achey hand?
Have you checked to make sure the cable is running free and not binding as this would add considerably to the effort needed. The problem is it would be easy to swop the clutch lever assembly with that from another bike which has a shorter action (and can therefore be adjusted nearer to the bar) but in order to still get the travel at the clutch basket that clutch lever would have to have a higher ratio, which in turn would make it even heavier.
The other thing you can consider, and this might sound a bit radical, is fitting a quick shifter. This would allow you to change up the box without touching the clutch at all (Yes I know lots of people can do that anyhow without a quickshifter) which would save you at least some, if not half, of your clutch actions. |
Re: Clutch lever suggestion - achey hand?
When sat at lights etc I make sure I have my lever held as close to the end as possible to get as much leverage as I can.
Might this help? |
Re: Clutch lever suggestion - achey hand?
My sv1000 has a hydraulic clutch, its about the lightest one ive used on a bike.
The r6 has a cable, which i recently changed for a new one plus oiled it up before putting it on. Thats made a huge difference to the weight at the lever. A cable is only £10, plus a few drops of oil, work it through, then repeat. Thats were i would start, before looking at aftermarket levers and the like. :D |
