Any common faults with SVs?
Hello all !!!
I've been in biking a few years now (but only on L Plates), it is part of my plan to get full licence within the next few months !! there has been a lot of thinking of what i would like my first big bike to be !!I have decided that i would like an SV, most possibly will be the curvy one (or if i'm correct the K1). kinda chose it as my brother has a VTR 1000 and i really love the v twin sound track.I have read a lot about SV's and i know a few common faults are forks lowers tarnishing and old shocks both end and not to buy a raced one. I know from the research done on my brothers bike that most bike have common faults, was wondering whether there are any common faults on SV's Thanks a lot for any advice!! |
Re: Any common faults with SV's
Wiring, the loom can be fouled and chaffed by the seat screws causing shorting and very strange running.
Fuel tank drain corrodes if blocked, causes a fuel leak. |
Re: Any common faults with SV's
The stock suspension is crap
|
Re: Any common faults with SV's
The suspension is not that bad, the standard bolts used rot out a bit and some of the more hidden parts need stripping and cleaning occasionally, but not a lot really.
Things gone a bit wrong on my one so far have been the clutch worm gear and a fault with the alarm. However the alarm was due to the pillock who fitted it and the clutch was due the the current owner not bothering to check it. :D |
Re: Any common faults with SV's
Japanese handling and Italian electrics
Mine seems to shake things off too, although Nyloc nuts and threadlock seem to have stopped that - although it managed to shake its gearlever out last night - god knows how! |
Re: Any common faults with SV's
The pilots.

A trip to pro-bolt can sort the rot! The brakes do need cleaning from time to time. Invest in a good set of sockets and ring spanners. A bottle of FS365 or acf50 does not go amiss and coat the engine and chasis and suspension |
Re: Any common faults with SVs?
Lack of grease in... errrr... everything!
|
Re: Any common faults with SVs?
Rectifier-regulator.
|
Re: Any common faults with SVs?
-bad paintwork on forks
-internal tank corrosion caused by overflow -weak supsension front and rear for fat ppl -crap dragging clutch plates -bad regulator -chaffing loom -speedo rotor -seizing caliper pins -oil pickup at front (dont wheelie) -rear underframe corrosion |
Re: Any common faults with SVs?
they good bikes but when buyin look for care for bike. Aye the rear calipers are prone to siezing with road salt

Re: Any common faults with SVs?
Asking for a list of possible faults make it sound like a bad bike; and it isn't.
If you are looking at a curvy, it is at least 7 years old (a K1 will be 9 years old) so is bound to have some wear/tear. It has always been a fairly budget bike - most things can be improved upon, but the stock part when properly maintained are good enough for most riders (novice or experienced). |
Re: Any common faults with SVs?
i really appreciate the advice!! i now they are old bikes and succumb to wear and tear !! as i say i know from the firestorm they have weak rectifiers and CCT,s fail all of which can be changed or improved !!!
