Maxxis Supermaxx Sport Touring Tyres (MR6029)- anyone usd them?

Hi

Anyone had any experiences with this tyre? I did a search and they have been mentioned although nothing specific, or on this model.

I know they are at the cheaper end of the scale. Anything not much dearer but loads better?

What is a rough guideline price on fitting a pair, both for wheel in on its on or still attached to the bike?

Thanks all

Good reviews overall - looks like Im getting a pair soon.

£10 per tyre off the bike seems to be mentioned so I'll keep that in mind.

How much does it cost to fit them if I just ride the bike in? Much more, or neglible?

I'd call my local but I have no phone access at the moment, lol.

Has anyone, on another note, used the Maxxis Supersport tyres on an SV?

What are your thoughts?

if you fancy a ride to norwich Tinklers motorcycles sell maxxis and fit tyres to the bike for free last time i was there. THe quote for my old vrf750 was i think about 144 fitted!(front and back).
However that was in winter so may have changed.

I had a pair of the sports fitted on Monday morning (ride in). With nitro fill - £32

Bought a set from DK online... £132 delivered. Replaced a set of BT-021's.

So far I'm very impressed.

Excellent!

Incidently I found a mobile service guy that does tyres as well

£20 each for on bike, £10 if I take em off myself. Not bad for coming to my place to do it!

had a pair of these fitted for almost a year now, done 7k miles, use the bike for daily commute and fast road blasts, and the rear still has tons of tread.

trust them 100%, and do like to push the bike in the twisties, almost no chicken strips left. Id definately fit them again.

Also for the sake of an extra £10-£20 ride in, it seems much easier to go that route, I cant be bothered with the time and agro removing the wheels.

For anyone elses info, don't pay any extra for nitrogen.

You don't believe the hype about reduced tyre wear (through less requirement to maintain) then Chris?

I was sceptical, but figured I'd give it a go and see - lazy git I know.

No it's a load of boll*cks. Marketing hype, and poor marketing hype at that.

Useful for track situations where every little advantage counts, but unless you've your own supply of nitrogen it's pointless.

What do they claim Nitro does to help? And on what grounds?

I have my own supply of nitrogen, and I don't use it for tyres.

Explain to me the performance advantage ;)

It expands less when hot so you can have more consistent pressures for racing. Like I say you'd need to be at a serious racing level before you can expect any gains. WSB kind of level  For road riding or even trackdays it's a waste of money.

We also use it in aircraft wheels for different reasons. Not many bikes hit 30,000 feet so it's less of a worry ;)

I know of no advantage for everyday riding, but having said that I have used helium in tyres to keep them cool

Sorry you'll have to go into more detail with that, you seem to have accidentally given the same explanation as the people charging for the service ;)

Why does nitrogen expand less than air when hot?

Why does nitrogen expand less than air when hot?

You can look at your own ideal gas notes ;)

AFAIR heat capacity ratio for nitrogen is less than that of air so expands less with temperature. It won't be a huge difference however, and it's not the main purpose of it.

Using air you'll never be sure of the moisture content and subsequent expansion when heated. Humidity, atmospheric pressure and all kinds of jazz are all variables that can be removed very easily by using nitrogen. With pure nitrogen you know how it will expand with temperature exactly.

Like I say, at F1/GP level it makes sense. For road riding it's just a scam.

Re: Maxxis Supermaxx Sport Touring Tyres (MR6029)- anyone usd them?

I'd hazard a guess that it's so close to ideal gas behaviour with regards ratio of heats as to be completely negligible.

Aha moisture content, now you may be onto something...
Of course, I'm sure the water based tyre soap used has absolutely no effect on the humidity inside the tyre... ;)
As you agree, for the road, a scam.

I don't think the racing teams use it for any particular reason except it being readily available in dry form and not a safety risk.

Well on an aircraft the moisture content is a huge deal (ice crystals at altitude etc), but also with the fuel in the wings tucked up next to the tyres you don't want an oxygen supply. I suppose F1 teams may also cite this as a reason.

Hadn't thought of the soap though  Good point!

The inert nature of nitrogen may also be more important on a plane as the wheels must get bloody hot going from unloaded, -40 degree, standstill to a 100 ton load, god knows what temperature and 200mph in one "eep"

Re: Maxxis Supermaxx Sport Touring Tyres (MR6029)- anyone usd them?

So, we've established it's probably a waste of money to have a nitro fill. Will it mean I don't have to check my tyre pressures as often? i.e. are the particles bigger?

BTW - Tyres are well scrubbed in now. Full off confidence in the dry and easily as good as my old 021's in the wet - which surprised me (got to test 'em this morning)...

Overall for the money - a REALLY good option.

I'm runinng at 36F, 42R btw. I prefer the feel at these pressures.
