Vehicle MOTs 2012

Not sure whether many have picked up on the "new changes" to vehicle MOTs 2012, the following IS worth a read through.

http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice...nges-2012.html

In particular dash warning lights now become a fail issue and not an advisory i.e airbag/seat belt, plus others/etc

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

Had the Fiesta MOT'd today. Only catch was one indicator bulb needed replacing. Broken? No, "wrong colour"! It's one of these bloomin' painted bulbs and the paint had deteriorated so it wasn't orange enough any more. It was so much easier before orange indicator lenses became uncool.

(walks away grumbling about the price of everything and young people today....)

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

They kept it fairly sensible at least, not going to fail cars for a management information light telling you a sensor you don't even need is not even working. Depending on the criteria for 'fitted properly', I bet a few folk with home fitted towbars are going to get failures though!

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

Vehicles fitted with aftermarket HID systems must also be fitted with properly working washer and levelling systems.

Pleased about that.
I assume 'vehicles' includes bikes

OK WERE DID YOU GET THAT FROM?
Have you read the official manual?
RfR is
A headlamp levelling or cleaning device inoperative or otherwise obviously defective,
iF ITS NOT FITTED HOW CAN IT BE IN OP????

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

*HID headlights can cause dazzle if they are dirty or aimed too high so car manufacturers must fit headlamp cleaning and levelling systems. A car will fail if a mandatory headlamp cleaning or levelling system is missing, doesn't work or is obviously defective.
Vehicles fitted with aftermarket HID systems must also be fitted with properly working washer and levelling systems.

In all fairness this is slightly ambiguous...

*From link on AA's website about the CHANGES that are coming in (albeit I haven't read the whole thing properly)

No I havn't read the official manual.

'Vehicles fitted with aftermarket HID systems must also be fitted with properly working washer and levelling systems.'

Is a statement. I'm hoping it means that just what it says, and the word vehicles includes bikes.

muzikill 04-01-12 11:24 PM

Theres a heck of a lot of cars with Hid and im forever flashing them thinking they have the full beam on. Pretty chuffed about this rule now. As its proved that every time I get dazzled by these cars at night theyve been bulb replacements rather than standard to the vehicle. It'll take a year or so for these to dissapear from the roads. I just wish the police would enforce the people who constantly have the fog lights on.

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

They'll just swap the bulbs over for MOT time

andrewsmith 04-01-12 11:27 PM

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

Vehicles fitted with HID's should have self leveling suspension systems (go through the bump not over it so to speak), so that why they're limited to high end production luxury saloons and rolls etc... as standard.

Ok have you read the info panel's on the left of the official manual?

I expect it to become a enforceable law to stop this. Its a doddle to spot it and check what a vehicle failed on previously. Itll become one of those things the police can enforce during spot checks.

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

this is the manual you access from the VTS when we log on and off an MOT and issue yor pass or fail.
so yes its the word of god.
when we fail a vechle we have a list of what we can reject ,.

See the official manual for what ever class you have
Class 5 its getting real tight

Also going to have to be careful when cutting to fit a new can...

"Exhaust
A catalytic convertor fitted as original equipment but missing will be a reason for failure."

tigersaw 05-01-12 12:25 AM

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

I've just read the motorcycle link download (thanks), I can't see any mention of a speedo in it. Can I imply the mot man does not have to see one?
Only asking as I've swapped mine for a GPS

Surely if a Cat is supposed to be there then it falls foul of this?

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

If pipe is still there, and no emissions test... who is going to know? MOT man cannot be expert on shape of every cat/de-cat pipe on every bike.

NTECUK 05-01-12 01:13 PM

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

Well if you put a new can on its just a substitution .
If I had a fail on that grounds I'd appeal.

NTECUK 05-01-12 01:17 PM

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

De cat pipes on cars are easy to Sus as instead of a fat box its just a pipe.
But if you smash the inside out who is going to know.
AS some cars can pass without a cat ...

Class 4.
That's all the station is approved for.

There is no legal requirement for a catalyst on a UK registered bike, they are only required for homologation purposes. Bikes aren't subject to emissions testing so no-one is ever going to know or care if you swap the cat for a straight through pipe.

Does this cover motorcycles? (with regards to warning lights)

I have an intermittent fault from a modification... Would be become a failure?!

And why we have so few fail,
Visit pending me thinks...
ps
The video for the new stuff is good.Who'd have thought a reverse cam not working right would earn a failer!

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

I've not watched the video yet but i realy should , I got dug up for the opposite , to many failures , brake pipes and suspension , I asked them to come up here and fix the roads and stop the rain 48 weeks of the year , don't think he was pleased with my answer , like you say , I feel a visit or mistery shopper looming .

My astra has a failing head gasket and management lights for EGR valve and crackshaft sensor. I guess the MOT next august is going to cost me an arm and a leg then? :(

Erm in a word yes

Re: Vehicle MOTs 2012

I might be missing something, but a quick glance at the bit covering HID lamps says vehicles MAY be fitted with a levelling system, not MUST.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...kes/MOTHID.jpg

Construction & use regs etc specify the need for systems to be fitted or not, the MOT doesn't. If they're fitted they must work, but as far as I can see, it doesn't say a wash/levelling system must be fitted to an aftermarket HID lamp.

Yes we have coverd that.
It's not a fail .....yet
