How to clean a downpipe?

Hello

Sorry if in the wrong section,
Just after some advise of what is needed & how to clean up my K4 SV?

:|

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...BE4F63E8AB.jpg

This is the worst of it, however a few bits and pieces towards the exhaust need a clean up as well.

Hoping to get my SV up on a paddock stand and give it a well deserved first clean in the new few weeks.
So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers :D

East bit of emery cloth, not too coarse a grade, or a drill with a wire brush attachment. Then some Autosol and it'll come up nice and shiney. It's stainless steel under that brown muck.

Optiglanz will make short work of the worst of the crud. Then autosol and some scotchbrite to finish. Works for me.

Be careful if you use optiglanz though. It's great stuff but very corrosive and not good for eyes, skin or paint ;)

^^ It's more of something to do tbh
But I also enjoy polishing my cars, not religiously but as and when.
Besides I've only had a SV for about 1 month, so when I take the fairing off for my cleanup, it will be good chance to properly look over the bike

Optiglanz worked great for me and then some metal polish. It's certainly getting there.

I had to use a green scouring pad with the Optiglanz, Then some wet and dry, then metal polish. I did it over a few days, but it looks better now.

I'm looking for other areas of Stainless that nay need touching up.

Funny you should ask. Here is the rest. Yep the oil cooler guard does whatever it fancies.

Mine will be coming off in the next couple of weeks. They really are coted in crap. Only two years old look more like 20. Loads of cleaning for the old girl coming up.

Also I'm going to get rad gaurds off Evotech as they do black ones rather than the bling silver stuff.

http://www.evotech-performance.com/m...ki/sv650s/2009

And I get a discount as Ive bought a few bits off them previously. They are willing to give discount if you buy a few bits at a time. Chris will sort you out.

I've got the black evotech guards, well worth the money and look the part.

How hard Is it to take the pipes off?
I'm off college from Tuesday till 8th January so have time to take them off and clean

Mines still a work in progress, need to get it on the paddock stand to get more space.
Have cleaned the majority of my downpipe, just a few Stuborn rust spots that won't budge.
Needs more sand paper :D

Never intended to put you, or anyone to shame. I just have too much time on my hands and a sad little life:D

This is my daily runner. I travel 68 miles a day, for work, all year unless it is icy.

I sadly enjoy cleaning my bike and car. I know they are not super bikes and cars but you still need to be proud of what you have. I think you should always make the most of what you have. I can easily understand people not cleaning the down pipes though.

Glad I found this thread. Have ordered some Optiglanz for my pipes, and a Beowulf radiator guard. Coooool.\\:D/

Re: How to clean a downpipe?

I did clean mine eventually :D
I'll try to post some pictures up tomorrow if I remember.
Good light and decent sand paper is key to getting it all off. Unfortunately the grand of sand paper I used was a tiny bit too soft and I was restricted to a garage lamp in a garage. Still mighty impressed with how clean the downpipe is now, but it's no where near the quality shine the guys before have got :(

I have just bought a similar rad guard from Beowulf. How have you fixed it to the rad? Mine has not come with any fixings at all.

Edit Just found out mine is for the N model which will have the bolts in the rad. Mine is a S model with 2 small indents each side where the bolts should go. Beowulf will send me FOC 4 M5x12mm s/s bolts. I assume there is enough thickness in the rad at these points for the bolts, as the rad is essentially the same for both models to start with

Mep, they are the original bolts. The the two alloy end trims off and bolt the Beowolf in it's place.
