see if there is any newer firmware for it, ive seem this with a few routers that have limited memory and realy suffer with P2P and large ammounts of connections

In the world of dynamic IPs and P2P, even if you are not using P2P there are lots of people still trying to connect to your router (failing) but this still uses up the memory and cpu in the router.

Ive had issues with a couple of routers, that would crash under high ammount of connections when using P2P

Are you sure it's the router, and not your line slowing down. Remember that the router will talk to your computer faster than your computer can talk to the internet.

It could be a case of the IP profile on the line reducing until the modem re-sync's. An easy test would be next time it's slowing down, use the routers webpages to disconnect from the ADSL connection, then re-connect. That will re-sync without restarting the router.

Even the slowest wireless connection is 54Mbps. Most ADSL lines are 8Mbps.

Ah - depends on the router some of the old netgear routers have a tendency to over heat. The two I had in work took them apart drilled holes in the case top and bottom (when circuit board is out). Then screwed a PC fan onto the top taking the power off the circuit board to the router - not a problem after that. The fan was one with golf ball dimples on the blades ultra quiet.

Lots of routers are made from the same baseboard, just with slightly diffrent softwares, over the years they get updates, like extra RAM and more features on the software.

Whats the model of the router
