20K Service

Before I look into this too much, is the 20K one of the big ones (valves etc) or one of the smaller services? What's the next one like?

Mines due, but due to previous services over running ever so slightly, it's actually up to 22K (first service since I've owned the bike)

So I'm thinking, if this isn't a major one then do it myself (I'm happy enough to work on the bike, just finding the time) to get my teeth in. It'll save me money and I can get the servicing back on track with the next one.

Not sure but you could start by doing the oil, oil filter, air filter and sparkplugs yourself then lube everything check the brakes/rubber/chain etc. then if there's anything additional due try that or take it to the garage if it's a bit out of your comfort zone.
Someone helpful will be along soon anyway with the service guide :thumright:

15k is the major one on the pointy. So if that the same for a curvy I would say it is the first minor service after the major service. HTH

Yeah the 15k is the major one on the curvy too (valve clearances etc)

Cheers, there's little I won't try. It was mainly around timing for me to do it vs. a pro or if there was going to be anything that needed a judgement call, which their experience would be better than mine.

I'll have at it then.

What's the best source for a list of what needs to be done at each service?

There's possibly links on www.sv650.org/faq if not someone will point you in the right direction.

get a hynes manual. tells you everything that needs to be done and how to do it. you will need it if you are doing your own servicing.

Do they usually need adjusting at this interval? Do you usually find they actually need adjusting? Think mine will need to be done soon.

or a Clymer, I find it has better pics;) and at times a bit more in depth than a Haynes, I have both to cross reference.

They don't always need adjusting, but you don't know until you've looked, but I wouldn't leave it too long after 15k, 30k etc

When my clearences were checked at 30k, my dad noticed the hard casing material had worn off two of the cam-followers (cup-type things). He managed to replace the worst one, but the other one will need doing next time. Apparently, this was a problem with the 1999 SV's and also the TL1000's as suzuki had made a manufactuing error, leaving the hard-coating too thin and easily worn away (a part of me is concerned about lubrication aswell, and the histroy of my bike...)

Just have a good check. New ones are around £50 each.

i think my wallet just fainted at being reminded that
