Fuel light permanently on

My 03 pointy fuel light has recently decided to stay permanently on, even with a newly brimmed tank.

I've done a quick search of the forum but I couldn't really find anything other than questions about tank range.

Any ideas?

the pointy will do around 130 mile before fuel light comes on and then to play safe you have around 20 miles (ish).

Under the tank there is a big nut that bolts to the tank trace that wire back to the plug, unplug it squirt some WD-40 in it and plug back in and try it. If still no joy your level sensor might be broken or stuck??

Try filling it up with petrol.

The "level sensor" is just a couple of thermisors (heat dependent resistor) - you could measure the resistance across them, I suspect one (the lower one) will probably be open circuit. All of the rest of the electronics for the fuel light is in the clocks. If it measures OK at the tank end, there is probably either a broken wire or a short in one of the looms.

Hope this helps,

MT

Would fuses or dodgy earths affect this?

No reading from the sensor... light comes on.... :S

Maybe.....

Hmm, I checked the connections under the tank / sprayed with WD40 and all seem ok, but the fuel light problem persisted. It's now progressed into a dead speedo, although the lights on the dash and the rev counter are still working.

I've also had a burning smell coming from the front of the bike for a week or so but I just put this down to the roads being wet and dirty - it now looks like it's more than likely related.

I'm gonna check all the fuses and wiring around the seat and headstock and see if I can spot anything burnt out. Still got lights / power at the minute.
