Need Some PC Help

Took the side off my case last night to look how many system fans I could have in the case. Also, while I was there I thought I'd try to tidy up the wiring. Didnt get very far though as it was already about the best I could make it. Only unplugged an IDE cable and a SATA cable. The SATA cable also has power to it from the power button on the case which connects to the PSU.

Anyway, after I put it all back together, the damn thing wont start up! I get a small "fizz" when I connect the power cable to the PSU like you normally get. When I press the power button, the LCD display on my case lights up for a fraction of a second then goes off. If I press the power button again, nothing happens. If I unplug it and plug it back in, I get the same split second lighting of the LCD display.

I took the PSU to work today and tried it on another PC and it worked fine. Bit gutted really cos I thought it might just ne a dud PSU. Now Im thinking it could be more serious. Oh, and I tried another power lead too and that also didnt work.

Any ideas anyone?

have you knocked some of the connections from the power on switch to the motherboard?

Gave them all a good check last night and all connections seem fine to me.

Sounds like something is shorting or tripping somewhere? You could try the diagnostic approach or starting it with a variety of things unplugged like extranous hard drives etc etc. In fact, just a PSU and mobo should start the fans etc running until it can't find a boot drive.

I know the worrying feeling. I have a few spares if you are interested, ASUS A8N SE if I remember correctly.

Well personally I'd try plugging the cables back in that you removed last night and see if that sorts it. ( Unless you've done that already )

Failing that as mentioned above. Unplug everything from the MB except the PSU and then see if it fires up. If it does, plug things back in one at a time until you find the culprit.

I've had similar before when a hard disk has blown and it shorts out and then the PSU trips and wont power on.

Failing that are all the MB mounts insulted its not something shorting out on the underside of the main board ?

Well, got late last night before I could start to look at this but managed to get everything stripped right down to individual components. Got the board out of the case and got the front panel of the case (my case is rubbish and it was a right faff with all the wires and hidden screws!)

Anyway, got the on/off button wired back to the board and fitted the PSU. Pressed the power button and CPU fan span like a good un! Hopefully that means my board and CPU are safe and I just need to put it all back together. I'll be doing that tonight hopefully, if not tomorrow.
