Broken external hard drive

A mate has an external hard drive with loads of music and photos on. Unfortunately it has given up on him. Is there a way of retrieving the contents?

Yes but not cheap.
Is it the power supply or the drive itself?
If it's just the power supply it's a simple job of just plugging it into a pc or another external body.
If it's the drive, that's where it can get costly.

As far as I know it's the drive.

Re: Broken external hard drive

chances are it could be the enclosure, does it make any ticking noises when running or it is quiet and simply will not read?
What sort of drive is it? (ie big - the size of a cdrom drive, or Small - the size/smaller of a floppy disk drive)

If its a standard hard drive in an enclosure, i.e. not a solid state, likely that the bearings are knacked so it wont spin up any more. I have heard that putting the drive in a freezer can bring it back to life temporarily, possibly long enough to get some stuff off it.

Tony - these guys are friends of mine and can almost certainly help:

Hard drive data recovery from Kingdom Data Recovery

Give them a bell and I'm sure they'll keep you right.

There's more to it than just bunging it in the freezer, google the process before you do it
