Source for 100% legal metal reg plates?
I'm looking for a UK supplier of small, legal number plates. I want it pressed from a single sheet of metal, as it'll be used offroad. I would also like it to have the EU GB marking displayed on it, rather than adding another sticker.
Legally required* minimum sizes for motorcycles are as follows: Characters Size Height 64mm Width 44mm Stroke 10mm Side margin 10mm Top & bottom margin 10mm Space between characters 10mm Space between groups 30mm Within reason, cost is not an issue. Can anyone recommend somewhere that might be able to help? *No, these aren't hearsay and the oft-quoted 9'x5' is nonsense, I have an authoritative source that confirms this. |

id give some clasic bike places a ring, sure all the old bikes had metal numberplates so they must have a source for them

Local Travellers Site may have some but the numbers may not be what you want;)

Re: Source for 100% legal metal reg plates?
As new numer plates have to conform to different reflective standards and unless you are fitting it to a classic vehicle it may be difficult to source as suppliers now have to keep a record.

Re: Source for 100% legal metal reg plates?
As Dicky Ticker said above - that document states that numberplates must be made of self reflecting material. Not sure how easy this would be to do to a metal numberplate (may just need a special base paint or something??) But something to bear in mind..
A quick google search found this site: http://www.4plates.co.uk/metalplates.asp cost £40 - may be worth a call to check legality of their plates.. HTH |
Re: Source for 100% legal metal reg plates?
My bike registration is from one of my old trucks which originally had a metal plate but I had to change it when fitting it to the bike to conform with the change in law regarding the reflectivity[?] of the background.

Re: Source for 100% legal metal reg plates?
I've found places that are listed as legit sellers selling metal plates (it seems the paint they use determines whether or not it meets the reflective requirements). I've found somewhere that fits the bill for metal, reflective, legal, but not EU GB marking.

Re: Source for 100% legal metal reg plates?
I'm a Registered Number Plate supplier and I believe that the metal pressed plates can only be used on a certain aged car/motorbike.
If you get pulled you will get more than the usual £60 fine. (Plus it will be obvious, flashy modern motorbike with classic metal plate on it.) |
