Rear caliper
Changed my rear pads yesterday and found the dust seals had perished and cracked and had been forced out by the pistons, i have a complete rebuild seal kit on order due tomorrow, i have a couple of questions.
1. How easy is it to split the caliper and changed the seals etc (I am mechanically competent) 2. I have an MOT on Saturday i take it it won't fail on that coz you can't see without taking the caliper off. I want to do the work next week as i am not at work. Thanks guys :) |
Re: Rear caliper
It is quite an easy job to split the caliper, only a couple of bolts. As for the MOT, as long as it isn't leaking oil & the braking force is alright, then I can't see you having a problem

Re: Rear caliper
Cool, brake is fine better than before in fact as they were almost down to the metal and squeeling like mad, not leaking checked that before i put the caliper back on, just running with no dust seals at the moment

Re: Rear caliper
Todays Top Tip. Crack the tension off the joining bolts before you take the caliper off the hanger.

Re: Rear caliper
Smart ass :p. Alright then. Top Tip No. 2...
Use the pressure of the brake system to pop the inboard piston. With the caliper disconnected you can remove the outboard piston by pushing it out from behind with a bit of rod through the banjo bolt hole. One less potentially messy high-speed brake fluid ejection. |

Re: Rear caliper
or my top tip.
Use a twin barrel footpump, a football adaptor and some decent tape as a gasket. Got 2 inboard pistons out that way last year. Not a bad take off for 40psi with a partially seized piston |
Re: Rear caliper
Did this today, but could i crack the jointing bolts? Like hell could i, managed to change the seals without splitting it so only the tiny inner 'o' ring that was not changed, have to say though new seals make one hell of a difference, new fluid may have summit to do with it as well.
