Re: painted or powder coated wheels
Im going to be doing the same in the winter. People have told me that when the powder coating gets chipped moisture gets under and lifts the powder coat. I tried painting my own wheel but the paint and lacquer was weak. Im sure a professional paint shop would do a great job. However cost is a big part. Someone offered to paint both wheels for me for £200. Im not sure what the going rate is?

Re: painted or powder coated wheels
Like you say---powder coating you can get done, alas not so lucky as you so it can be expensive.Alternatively you can spray paint wheels which is easier as not so specialised so DIY possible but also easier to repair any damage

I was £50 a wheel to get them powdercoated. I wouldnt say the finish was as nice as paint and you'll always have problems around the valve
Before I had them powdercoated I had the front sprayed by a top notch professional sprayer and the finish was perfect and not showing any signs of wear at all. If I was getting them done again I'd get them sprayed |
Re: painted or powder coated wheels
Powder coat is harder and chips easier, it can also be pourous and let pressure escape from the tyre. Paint will scratch rather than chip and can be easily repaired.
To powder coat, you have to remove all the paint as this will bubble up in the oven and also remove bearings because the grease will melt in the oven and run out and the seals will melt. Also when i had mine powder coated, I previously had polished rims and the brake dust had eaten into the aluminium and that left little bubbles in the powder coat at the baking stage which ruined the finish. |
