Buy a Haynes manual. You cannot learn everything from the internet.

If you're that unsure about what you're doing do you really think you should be dismantling your brakes?

I'd post up a location and see if any friendly orger will help, or if you local good mechanic will let you watch and learn.

Pad change is quite simple on the SV with this guide: http://www.bluepoof.com/motorcycles/...nt_brake_pads/

But be aware that if the pistons are covered in cack then you could do damage forcing them back in, and what's really needed is a strip, clean and rebuild.

Retaining pins may cause you a bit of bother as well. They corrode in place and are a right biatch to get out.

Above is just a generic video showing you the process of changing pads. Its pretty straight forward. If your still not sure then i'd suggest buying a Haynes manual as suggested by Trev and following that. Another option would be to have a fellow Orger, who's close by, to come guide you through it :-)

don't pump the brake pistons out once pads are removed - and if you do, don't under any circumstances put your fingers between the pistons to get them to pop out equally, I managed to get my fingers stuck for about 2 mins like that til I could reach some washing up liquid to get free.. Use a bit of wood or something instead, much less painful.

thanks a lot for the answers and especially the links i think theyve given me what i want, plus ive got the haynes so fingers crossed :)

just to double check, if i take the top of the reservoir off to push the pistons back in then i just simply put the top back on before i pump the brakes with the new pads in place, its as simple as that is it? i dont have to do anything technical to create a vacuum in the res or anything do i?

When you take the top off to push the pistons, watch the level. You dont want to let it spill over. Stop and remove fluid if needed.

You can then close it, but check the level after you get it all back together and top up as needed.

No vacuum, there is a rubber diaphragm which keeps the fluid isolated from the air in the res.
