hi orgers

my poor curvy has now down 30k :( poor bike. she runs like a dream but has started to burn oil :( so after summer if we get one this year im going to drop the engine out of her and give it a good looking over and re do some bits inside.

im hoping to change all seals and stop her burning oil.

but whilst the engine is out what Else would you do what bearings would you change, seals, gaskets or mods.

iv seen in the past that people have but hayabusa pistons in.

also seen people put in a part from a pointy to help with gear changes and false neutral. (cant remember whats it is called)

what elsa would you do

Sounds a little early for burning oil. How has that been diagnosed?

If you're taking the valve covers off I would consider a cam swap.

Burning oil you say... Is it just going down in the sight glass or are you getting smoke out of the exhaust?

cam swap to what, am i right in thinking people swap for a pointy cam ??



it dose go down in the sight glass, i also all ways seem to be putting oil in it but never a lot.

the main reason i think it is burning oil is the exhaust has a lot of black soot in and around the end. Also them is small dots of oil also in and on the end of the exhaust.

bike seems to run fine. i also don't get smoke.

In my experience they all burn a little oil.

However if it is burning a little too much you need to diagnose it properly first otherwise you'll be wasting your time replacing things that don't need it. First off is a compression and then leak down this is a good place to start when looking for engine trouble like burning oil. Should give you a good idea of the condition of the rings and the valve seals.

do you know what sort of values it should be in, how much leakage is ok ?? also how is this done. Is it done from spark plug ?? just basically a compression test of the engine ??

Don't have the values to hand. But the basics of it is take the spark plug out, whack the tool on, throw some air down it, see what the readings are (very simple view of things). That will tell you if your piston rings are worn or you have leaky valves etc, which would explain excessive oil consumption.

If you plan to test yourself then its the purchase of tools, but make sure you get bike applicable adapters. Not sure if your local garage could offer this diagnosis or what they would charge for it.

But coming back to the first post, there is lots you can do. Whats your budget?

I don't really have a budget I would just like ideas of what people have done or know about.

Then I will see what my funds are like :)

Well there is lots you can do. You might find this thread helpful, as its got cam swap, bussa pistons, and shift stars in it.

don't bother tiring to put performance stuff in it's not worth in.

how much oil are you going threw between oil changes?

how often do you change the oil and filter?

what colour is the spark plug electrode insulator?
