Used tyres - yes or no?
 

What peoples views on using part worn tyres? I'm a bit strapped for cash at the moment and need to replace the front tyre on the sv but been offered a part worn of the same make as the one on the bike with about 3mm tread for £20 and im tempted

if your strapped for cash go for it but add another £10+ for fitting.

As Bibio said it's about £10 to have it fitted, then £10 to get another tyre fitted again soon when this one goes, so a new tyre is better but this will do the job better than your current one for now.

As long as it wasn't removed from the previous bike because it was old. Re: the coach crash on TV recently. A tyre can look fine but be lethal if the rubber has dried out (or whatever chemical process occurs over time).

Modern tires have a date code moulded into them. I had to change out a trials bike front which was from 1993 :smt009

3mm for use during the summer, I probably would use it too.

I started changing my own tyres, then buying part worns becomes cost effective.

The first guy has the better method but he is a bit OCD about his disks. I havent felt the need to take mine off. The spade trick for breaking the bead works surprisingly well, and if you have a thin piece of wood between the rim and spade you would have to be pretty special to do any damage.

Its worth considering doing for anyone on a tight budget.

I used ex-race worns before with loads of tread on before absolutely fine.

Just make sure you're aware of what type of tyre is it (eg, for racing, touring, etc...) as my only issue with them was around the actual compound of the rubber being supersoft for the track, and therefore took considerably longer than standard road tyres to get heat into them before they would grip well.
