Re: spark plugs

You won't notice any difference in power or economy, assuming it's actually running properly anyway.

What they offer is improved initiation of the burn and lower voltage requirements from the rest of the ignition system. In simple terms it will start more easily and run more consistently. The differences are subtle, you may or may not notice anything. They also help when the fuelling is less than perfect, for example carb engines cold starting and running off choke sooner, or tip-in after overrun when fuelling tends to struggle.

They do also last somewhat longer than the traditional design, but again that may not actually be much of an issue to you.

Personally I use iridium plugs wherever possible, it's relatively little oncost in the big scheme of things (e.g. fuel, tyres, insurance, road tax etc) and as such there's not much reason not to fit them.

Be aware there are reportedly some fake NGK iridium plugs about, so buy from a reputable source.

If you want a reliable online source, I've always had good service from http://www.spark-plugs.co.uk/ , nearly always next day delivery. Prices are a little higher than some fleabay sellers, but probably quite a bit less than a bike shop, and they are reputable. (No connection with them, just a customer).

The good feature of iridium plugs is they last a very long time. If you're planning on changing your plugs per the maintenance schedule, use cheaper plugs.

I just bought some on ebay for £6.25 each with free delivery. Arrived this morning and will fit them as soon as I get half an hour. Had them on my Hornet and they were great - did about 8000 miles with no issues and still going strong when I changed it.

My RC-51 came stock with iridium plugs. I checked them at 12.000 miles. They looked good and the gaps were as new, so I put them back in. I changed them at 24,000, but I don't know why, they still looked good and had gaps as new.
