White stuff on oil cap?
Since the cold came in last week I've noticed white gunk building up on my sv650 oil filler cap.....I do a short 10k trip to work daily and go for a good long spin about twice a week. Went for a long spin on Sunday and there was no white stuff but it's back today after work.
The oil window looks fine and the oil itself looks fine too. I'm going to do an oil change anyway as it's due. What would the cause of this be? Also on start up there is white vapour coming out of exhaust for 2-3 minutes. |
Re: White stuff on oil cap?
i'm no expert but it may be the condensation from short runs .. i had the white vapour which whilst disconcerting was just water also

Re: White stuff on oil cap?
Sounds like condensation.Nothing to worry about as long as it doesnt become a huge amount.A good long run burns it off.

Re: White stuff on oil cap?
If you are not loosing coolant and a few short trips it's condensation. You have said a long run sorted it. I do a load of short runs and every bike does it.

White stuff on oil cap?
Thanks for the replies guys, I don't think it's loosing coolant can't really see into it will have to prop the tank up to get in to look.
Hoping if is just condensation, it is just on filler cap nothing everything else looks good, I've done the same commute on the bike since March never saw the stuff before although it was a very warm summer, would the cold weather attribute more to this or would it happen even when warm out. The bike did also sit for the month of September. |
Re: White stuff on oil cap?
It will only do it in cold months, as long as its in your oil cap and hasnt contaminated your oil its fine.
It is the short trips that do it, the engine doesnt get hot enough to boil the water away, long run will cure it. If you oil turns a chocolate milkshake colour get it checked. |
White stuff on oil cap?
Thanks guys going to go for a long run today and see what happens, also managed to check coolant level with a very powerful torch it's spot on il keep an eye on it anyway. Will do oil change at weekend and see what it's like. From what you have told me seems like condensation. Will know for sure in a few hours a guess :)

Re: White stuff on oil cap?
Had the same too a few years ago and it was condensation due to short commutes. Thanks for the reminder as i will go check mine again soon due to a few short commutes recently.
