Petrol smell when cornering
Afternoon guys,
Anyone heard of this before? Went out for a ride with mates, the guy following me reported a strong smell of petrol when I corner enthusiastically on my K2. Can't find anything wrong with the fuel lines and no staining you would expect from a leak, the filler cap seal looks ok too! This has been mentioned on a few occasions, and not only when I have recently filled up, Bit baffled at the mo, Thanks in advance Mike |

What's your mpg like? I know it varies from week to week and person to person but it may be a clue.

Re: Petrol smell when cornering
I get the same remarks about my K5.
I assume its overfuelling when accelerating, so those behind smell the unburnt fuel from the exhaust. |

Re: Petrol smell when cornering
Maybe the tank drain pipe has a hole in it, so it's leaking out of that.
Other than that a bit of unburnt fuel on the overrun |
Re: Petrol smell when cornering
As Mavizap has suggested, the drain tube from the filler well can leak. If you open the cap, at the front right of the well you will see a hole, this is a tube that runs right through and out of the bottom of the tank, it can suffer from rust that causes it to rust through, or to become detached from the well of the tank. It's happened to a number of early SVs, and seemingly difficult to trace fuel smells are a common indicator of this.

Re: Petrol smell when cornering
Oh joy!! Thank you boys, I will investigate that.
I notice the fuel cap is sitting very slightly up when locked ( about 2mm ) I am wondering if fuel could be getting past the cap seal and leaving via said pipe? I get no puddles of fuel ( or staining from ) when the tank is full and the bike in the garage |
