Pointy rear shock upgrade
 

I'm hoping to upgrade my rear shock this spring or summer but looking on ebay the zx10r 'no cuts necessary' ones seem to go for loads and probably have loads of miles on them too. Should I be expecting to pay £150+ for one? 10 to 10 1/2 stone with no gear on if that helps

I used a K4 gsxr 1000 shock. Got it for £80. Had to cut the battery tray and remake it with some metalwork but totally transformed my bike

I'm quite happy to lose the toolbox, I'm thinking of chopping it off anyway.

Yes i chopped that completely off along with the battery tray. Had to move some relays and extend the negative lead to the battery also.

Think I'd rather try and not have to mess with the battery tray if I could help it. I have removed the pointless battery tray guard or what ever it is called.

Do i ideally need to match the kg/mm with my fork springs?

as with any second hand rear shock you are going to need it serviced £100 then add the proper weight spring £60 this then takes you up to £300-400 for a second hand shock.

YYS, Nitron, Ohlins etc.etc built for your weight and serviceable for not that much more dosh. BTW any shock need serviced at or before 20k miles after that they are pretty much goosed. Nitron shocks keep a good resale value so you can expect at least 1/2 of what you paid for it if it comes time to sell.

if you do get a nitron dont be a fool and say its for racing get a road spec one.

and yes you need to upgrade the front springs while you are at it. also do a few we mods inside to forks.

I've done emulators and ktech springs with the weld and reaming out of the damper rod, made a very pleasing difference.

Think the rear may be waiting a while in that case.

yup, your better saving and getting a proper designed drop in shock rather than a hack. it sounds like a lot of pennies and it is to an extent which depends on how long you plan on keeping the bike. TBH depending on how many miles is on the standard shock they are not that bad, big difference with a decent shock is when you start to get a wiggle on round bumpy curvy stuff. the standard shock tends to let the bike wiggle its head as the dampening cant keep up.

contrary to popular belief stiff suspension is not good for road use. suspensions main criteria is to keep the rubber in contact with the tar while keeping the chassis stable.

This ones for a curvy, but they do pointy ones, price is good. If not look out for a 2nd hand Hagon shock, I've been happy with mine for ages, less than £200 if I remember
