Clutch replacement
 

My partner's curvy needs a new clutch.
I've only worked on a dry clutch before.


I watched a vid on youtube, the guy mentions a gasket, - found that on ebay, - does it need a sealant?


I assume (hope) it'll only be the friction plates that'll need replacing...?
Cheapest place to get them? EDIT - : I see plenty mentions of clutch plates post-2003, - £14 from M & P. But any listing mentioning the curvy K1 is more expensive. Is the early one's different?


Coolant.....what's in them? I have concentrated pink.

Before you go changing clutch plates check the lifter mechanism worm drive as its a common fault of clutch problems.

It'll be worth checking the steel plates for any signs of rusting or 'blueing' from heat / slipping. The steels must also all be flat, or the clutch will drag: lay each one on a sheet of glass to check.

For what it's worth I would fit new springs too, as they are dirt cheap and they do lose their springiness over time.

Thanks for the replies chaps. I've realised the Curvy has a seperate clutch cover, so if it has to come off for plate inspection it's simpler than the SK2.
@Bibio, the bike has only done 17k miles, so I'd be surprised if the clutch has worn out, so you could be right re the worm drive,- certainly worth checking first. What am I looking for?

And a specific post.......are the Gen1 & later clutches really different? I'd be surprised if the clutch plates & basket are not used in other Suzuki's never mind the other SV's.....????????????

You can try checking the part numbers for Gen 1 vs later bikes, this site is pretty good for that:

I've seen an old post re bearings falling out, but not much else. Anything to look for on the unit, or need taken off & split?


The bike has only done 17k so I wouldn't expect the clutch to be worn out.
Using the SV's worm drive part number brings up numerous other bikes, -does this look similar? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/205446532804?ul_noapp=true

Whats the symptoms as difficult to see how you can finish off an SV clutch in 17k! If the worm drive worn or sticking plates Id expect poor gear changes but not slipping....

Agree. The bike has been hardly used in the past two years. I changed the worn cable on it. Somebody else didn't think it was set-up properly. I don't have access to the bike, but the gear change was getting very clunky, becoming very difficult to get neutral & it sounds like there's drag now.


She took it for an MOT & the tester said 'needing new clutch'. Since making the initial post, I've remembered the above info. I remember adjusting the screw on the worm drive before, following a video I think.


So some info on checking the worm drive, - it'll be more convenient if she can check it herself.
