98/99 to slow

hi im a neewbee just got 98/99 650s and it resrticted to 190kph i think its a jap import only payed £1400 for it and shes aminter will happy with it bit why is it that it wont pull over 190kph in 5th or 6th gears and yes that is down hill with the wind behind you. wheelies a good can get her up in 1st and click into 2nd but she dont like 3rd need help as my mates one is not resrticted

Well that's about 120 mph which is close to the SV's top speed unless you're wrapped around the tank and have a tail-wind. Some bikes are slightly faster than others anyway.

I don't think that has anything to do with your bike being restricted. What colour is your bike?

andy marriner 07-11-04 08:22 PM

no bike only pulls 9500 in top or 10500 in 5th and yes downhill wind behind me yes it has some form of speed restiction i think its from japan well i know all suzukis are but this ones for jap market . disconected speedo and mess about with th three gear postion wires and if i disconnect pink one it only revs to 8500 in any gear

I don't have an sv, so correct me if I'm wrong here, but...

A lot of times vehicles don't pull to the redline in the top gear. It's because the engine doesn't have enough power to get through such a tall gear ratio. Sometimes, depending on the gear ratio, top speed is acheived through 5th gear instead of 6th. Try getting a different sprocket to shorten up the gear ratio a little and that might allow it to get through 6th gear.

(unless sv's are supposed to be able to redline 6th gear, in which case all of the above should be ignored!)

and why would you want to 'wheelie' ?

andy marriner 07-11-04 09:45 PM

All the SV's I've tried (and it must have been 30 plus by now) flatten out at between 9,500-10,000 revs, they may go a bit more than that but don't give any more power. Top gear seems to end about 9.500 revs and not go any further.

However, after some mild porting, skimming the heads, race filter and Jets, full system and G-pak, mine now pulls all the way through until about 11,250 or so in every gear except top with no drop off of power before the limiter cuts in. and although the final drive gearing has been changed (46 rear) it will still do 131mph (averaged over both ways, three GPS's, two escorteing bikes, and six runs).

I've just looked it up and your 190kph is 118.1 Mph so I would say it's restricted somehow whether that's because it's not running right or not I don't know, first I'd check the timing, valaves and basics out, after that
maybe see if you can borrow a G-pak and give it a try :?:
or borrow a set of carbs :?: .

the restriction could be just about anywhere.
But normally it's either exhaust, inlet (carbs or sometimes the rubber inlets beneth the carbs) airbox or electronuics.

Less likely is things like cam profiles and timing issues, but possible

Cheers Mark.
