Dumb Carbon Fibre Exhaust Question
 

How many questions have I asked/threads started about this exhaust?

Anyways:

There's this see thru' plastic covering the carbon fibre bits of the exhaust.

Do I remove this?

I'm thinking, "plastic melts"

The instructions state, " Peel back the protective film on the silencer (WHERE APPLICABLE)". Is this me?

My next question is probably going to be, "Which way up do I hold the hacksaw?" & "Do I cut from left ot right?" or something.

Shouldn't be allowed near a bike ;o)

um, btw: Going to ring the insurers then stick it on tonight if they're okay with this (with baffles for the time being).

The see through stuff, yes.

I've never had it on new CF exhausts though.

Re: the hacksaw. No idea what is best but you'll be tired at the end of it. If you're neighbour or neighbours neighbour has a angle grinder and safety hat and gloves, pay them a fiver to borrow it and save your self the hassle. Not what you wanted to hear I know!! :shock: I tried it with a hacksaw and after a minute noticed I was getting nowhere quickly. So gave in and got the angle grinder. :D

Just a couple of words of caution.

carbon fibre cans suffer if they aren't repacked regularly, the hot exhaust gases will bubble the carbon and it's f**ked, so make sure you repack every 4.5-5k.

Also if you do use an angle grinder make sure you have a cutting disk and not a grinding one, with a 4" or 4.5" you wont get all the way so just use the haxsaw on the last bit.

Inside the exhausts is some sort of baffling material (rockwool? I'm not sure) and with age, it gets burnt and blown to bits. So that after time, more of the ehat is getting to the carbon fibre sleeve and can cause swelling/bubbling or cracking (enhanced by the fact it's a vtwin and are very vibey!) Repacking costs about a tenner with material and the use of a rivet gun.

Personally, in my experience mate, don't worry about it. 4-5k is scaremongering, mine have lasted a lot longer. :)

Inside the Can itself between the tube that goes through the middle which is full of holes, and the outer carbon fibre sleeve that you can see is the "packing" which is effectivly a high-temperatre cotton wool type stuff, this absorbs a lot of the noise, and also provides a layer to protect the sleeve from the heat and pulses from the exhaust.

Carbon fibre is less able to deal with this than alloy / stainless steel, so as it (The padding) gets blown out of the back of the bike over time it starts risking being dammaged.

Inside a carbon fibre can there is normally wadding which is designed to dissipate the heat and sound coming out of the exhaust:-

This gradually burns away, which makes your can sound louder and louder.

With less packing, the can might feel hotter, and eventually might split.

It MIGHT last a lot longer than 5k however it is not worth taking a chance.

You can get the wadding from lots of aftermarket places (I think demontweeks do it) for about £10. It is simply a case of dismantling the can, replacing the wadding and re-rivetting it back together.
